63 yr old OTR driver here. I am thoroughly enjoying all of these interviews. I'm about 10 yrs younger than these Vet's, but grew up watching the evening news during the Vietnam war with my parents. I have nothing but the utmost respect for these Vet's! Thank you so much for putting these interviews together!
I too remember watching the news every night. My Dad (WWII) yelling about how they were tying these kids hands behind their backs. Mom would cry as the nightly names listing MIA/KIA rolled across the screen. I wanted to go as a nurse. Didn't happen though.

I'm so enjoying these stories from Vietnam. I can commiserate with your mother. When my son was in Iraq, he hit an IED and was slightly injured. He would not allow his men to call me because I knew I would go to pieces. He made sure he was the one who called me so I wouldn't panic.; just a little aside there.

My cousin’s son decided to become a Marine at age eight after 9-11. And that’s what he did. He graduated high school and two days later, he was in Parris Island. He was in such good shape and mentally prepared, he still says he actually liked boot camp. Of course, Iraq and later Afghanistan, were less likable.

All my recent friends are leaving NY. Understandably. But I feel I would notr be fully welcomed in MT. I hope I'm wrong. Thank you all for your service and PATRIOTISM!!!

Richard has an interesting surname. Derbyshire is a shire county in Central England. And is a great place to go hiking and walking. I live in the neighbouring county of Nottinghamshire. I feel kind of connected to him in a strange way. Huge respect.
Dick reminds me so much of my UNCLE BILL. very personable well dressed masculine. Uncle Bill was white collar sales and different than anybody else in our family tree. He lived near L.A. and me in SAN DIEGO. Ioved everytime he came by to visit. I would sit nearby and listen to the adult conversation amid cigarettes and gin&tonics. I'm tearing up as I write remembering the. 50s and 60s in soCal. I was drafted in 1971 during Vietnam conflict and went ARMY.
I really enjoy these interviews its very interesting learning the stories it's hard to believe these were just kids we sent over there and they returned men and its hard to believe we put kids in charge and gave them so much responsibility kids today could never handle that responsibility I would enjoy hearing more of these interviews from other parts of the country if you could get more vets to do interviews tell their stories before there aren't any left these are stories that should be recorded you are doing important work I hope you continue thank you for taking time to do such important work

I was 18 in 1975 registered for the selective service think a letter said I was 1H classified and it said not being inducted at this time I guess because Vietnam was just about over and they weren't sending guys there anymore so I never had to do military service
This is the first time I realized, that maybe just the fact that these guys were willing to fight is enough. It doesn't really matter why. Maybe the day will come when that won't be necessary.
Mortars are scary. The whistle gives you about 1 second to get flat. If they are close, you can hear the thud when it comes out of the tube. Big tube artillery Is traveling faster than the speed of sound on a flat trajectory from 10+ miles away. You don't hear It. You don't see it. Nothing. You're standing there, then you're not. A big tube, like a 152, takes 5 milliseconds to kill or critically wound everything in a space the size of a football field. It takes 100 milliseconds to blink. Even if you don't get any shrapnel, the blast wave can destroy your organs, etc. Whether it's mortar or big tube, tons of people get concussions. I doubt they diagnosed that as much back in vietnam. That's my experience. I'm sure everyone's is different.
I’ve watched several of these and I now see the criticism that the interviewer keeps interrupting and putting words in their mouths. He inserts himself too much into the stories, perhaps as an attempt at friendliness but it backfires. Bummer. 🙁
Why did some guys have to do 3 years and some only had to do 1 year did it have to do with the year they were there in other words the beginning or towards the end of the war ?

Let's take it further. How about innocent, unarmed civilians that were murdered by US troops? What about destruction of their property? And last, but not least, what about the criminal behavior of US troops against US officers...ie. "fragging" for the purpose of avoiding orders? It's called mutiny.

If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13 The moment you "believe," or, put your trust in what Jesus has done for you, God saves you and your eternal destiny in Heaven is assured. You go from spiritual death to eternal life the moment you believe. Jesus said it this way: Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. "You grow up quick". I'm sure he did. But growing up quick....and maturing and becoming wiser aren't one and the same things. A lot of these veterans are stuck in the brainwashing of their day. Never really moved forward.
it is hard to see how sick media has become so anti freedom in a sick easy way loved by hollywood hard work is hated i do not know but i know truth when i see it
do your job and get it done ; now we are scared of a virus to the point of giving up our freedom , I wish Americans would depend upon God and not so much government.

Kids today DO handle that much responsibility. Vietnam wasn't the last war. Also there's literal kids here at home who support entire families.

Army was 12 months there and marines was 13 months!
