    For the longitudinal wave, it’s hard not to look at it like a linear graph, but the up and down part is amplitude (density) and the linear is time. It’s the same idea as turning the density graph sideways. Minor detail, but as a former audiology student, I just had to say something. Also the actual physics of sound (amplitude, sine, frequency, reverb) is actually really cool and would be a good topic for a future video!

    If a tree falls in the forest, animals hear it and run away. There are SO many people, companies, labs, schools,etc. who set up hidden cameras to see what critters do when there are no people taking photos and videos. When watched later, there are sounds, and some critters run off. Some critters are curious instead of startled.They look around to see what made the sound. I hate this question. It is so ridiculous.

    Fun fact that the pseudo-science fan part of Joe might like:
    The Thera explosion is posited in The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind as the possible impetus for modern consciousness.
    The super short summary is that prior to the explosion, humans lived as depicted in the Iliad, “hearing” their own thoughts as disassociated voices they attributed to dead ancestors, kings, or gods. But the explosion caused a refugee crisis that the surviving and surrounding communities couldn’t cope with under this sense of consciousness, and the result was a mental change like Odysseus in The Odyssey, who understands his thoughts as being his own and no longer bound to impulsive commands from “the gods”.
    I’d love to see Joe cover the topic. Not just because it’s a pseudoscience or an apparent inspiration for the new Westworld series (I haven’t seen it), but apparently it’s also being looked at again by legit neuroscientists due to the theory stating consciousness isn’t necessarily based on the biology of the brain, but was instead more of a “software update” that happened without any biological adaptation or change occurring to trigger it.

    "The speed of sound increases with density."
    Wrong. This is a common misconception due to an incomplete understanding of the comparison between air and water (and potentially a third medium such as steel or concrete).
    The speed of sound in a medium decreases with increasing density, but this is only a secondary factor. The primary factor in determining the speed of a compression wave is the material's compressibility (shear modulus is also important in solids). Therefore, very stiff materials (those with low compressibility, like water or steel) transmit sound much more quickly.

    That 160 decibel 1-time exposure thing is no joke - the hearing in my right ear is permanently fucked because of that. At 16 I went shooting once with some friends and a 12-gauge accidentally misfired RIGHT NEXT to my right ear - like 3 feet away - while it was unprotected (luckily my left ear somehow didn't suffer any longterm damage), which all but eliminated the hearing in my right ear seemingly for keeps. To this day (I'm now 37) my right ear only hears like 10% normal.

      In Australia, trees commonly hide what's called Drop Bears (similar to a Koala Bear, just not as cute, and very 'ken scary!!) - these 'ckers drop from trees when a human tourist (they don't seem to bother us locals) walks by... they'll scratch the eyes out of a lady, and rip the testi... things from a bloke within milliseconds! - Joe's lucky he did the filming of this video in Texas, USA!
      Good luck Joe... and I did hear you express a desire to visit Australia/New Zealand (NZ Drop Bears only attack female tourists) in the future - Don't, man... it's just not worth it, especially if you like trees.

  • @antonnym214

    Loving it! Hyper-interesting and supremely well-presented as always. at 18:26, you say "Microscopic variations in air densities." In the 1979 movie, Alien, the science officer, Ashe explains the alien detector works on "micro-changes in air density." Later, Sigourney Weaver, as Ripley, while crawling through the ventilation ducts, says "Micro-changes in air density, my ass." Which HAS to be in the top ten of all movie quotes ever. Don't ever stop. All good wishes.

    • @adolfodef
      @adolfodef 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is NOT the same!
      Sound does make a microscopic TEMPORARY change on the air density as the "shockwave" of sound pass through it (but then it gets reverted back to normal).
      -> The device detects PERMANENT changes in the air _viscosity_ (one of its key components being density), indirectly caused by the presence of living creatures.
      It is implied that infrared radiation (body heat) & magnetic fields (heart pumping) is what it is actually detected [directionality], while the filtering of information is based on the analysis of the air in between the device and the creature [qualitativeness].

    I happened to work at the MIT physics department when the LIGO detection was announced. "Oh, how much energy was released" "oh, we estimate about 54 solar masses" "of ENERGY?!?" "oh, yeah, 54 suns converted to pure energy, more or less".
    I mean sure, it sounds like a cute little chirp when you are 1.4 billion light years away and just amplifying a blip on a detector... but if this happens in our galaxy it won't be cute, and we won't need LIGO to see it.

    Interestingly there is a certain point where sound turns into pressure waves that are less sinusoidal wave like because the minimum pressure we can reach is a vacuum. As such some of the sounds of note that didn't make this list would be marine sounds, where the minimal pressure possible would be much more significant.

    Not to be that guy... but in case you were curious about the Thera Eruption... while it was massive, it did not wipe out the Minoan civilisation as a whole. The ruins at Akrotiri were obviously destroyed by the volcano, but most of the Minoan civilisation on Crete bounced back and flourished. In the relativistic dating used in the area, the Thera eruption marks the boundary between the LM IA and the LM IB periods.
    Though regardless, this was not a likely cause of the Bronze Age collapse, since it happened multiple centuries 400-500 years before the 1177 Date you referenced from Eric Cline's book.

      Matthias Ott because Europe is so crowded that *nothing* is “off in the distance”?
      Ironically enough, I live on a 75 hectares parcel of land, my nearest neighbor is 1.6km distant, and as I type this another neighbor, about 2km away, is firing a gun. Probably a .30-30 not a shotgun, but regardless, it’s part of the background noise of rural living like ambulance sirens in a city.

      Haha, so typical how you guys think differently. As a European I immediately understood that the answer is that nobody has a gun. I can't remember the last time I heard a gun and maybe I never witnessed the sound of a real gun going off, which is likely true for a lot of people here.

    • @jpe1
      @jpe1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matthias Ott I very much doubt that there “are no guns.” I’ll believe that there aren’t many handguns, or semi-automatics, but without shotguns or rifles how do you hunt? I personally do a bit of bow hunting now and then, depending on the deer population, but I don’t see how bow hunting could be a replacement, especially for small game and waterfowl.

    Kramer
    John Kramer (colloquial: "The Jigsaw Killer") is a fictional character and the main antagonist of the Saw franchise. Jigsaw made his debut in the first film of the series, Saw, and he later appeared in Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, Saw 3D, and Jigsaw. He is portrayed by American actor Tobin Bell.

    Has anyone looked to the Dreamings of indigenous Australians for the Toba eruption? Because there were definitely people here by that time, and something like that would've left its mark. I know that there is research using the Dreamings to pinpoint various astronomical events, and to understand things like the changing coastline of Australia over the millennia, so it seems like this would be something to ask about. Just a thought.

They slipped that one in very subtly so that I didn't notice. I then had to cancel that one too to prevent further billing. So for one "free" subscription I had to cancel twice and was billed once. Watch out they don't catch you too - I would definitely not go with them again.
