  • San Francisco has a impressive fleet of approximately 300 trolleybuses. Particularly notable are the very steep grades on several routes.
    After around 15 years of service the Skoda 14TR trolleybuses are being replaced by New Flyer Xcelsior trolleybuses. The replacement of the articulated Skoda 15TR trolleybuses by articulated Xcelsior trolleybuses is completed.

    In such a hilly city as San Francisco, an eminently sensible form of transport. Imagine the polluting clouds of smoke as diesel buses struggled up these inclines! Sadly in the 1960s and 70s in the UK, where many towns and cities had extensive networks, we lost all our trollybuses, which were replaced by conventional buses, under the somewhat misleading description of 'progress'.

    Those hills no problem for an electric motor no slip just pure power...like the carrying bikes on front...cool direct power foot down and ur off...no riding clutch no slip just foot n go...look just like buses in uk inside.

    Liked Friday morning 16 April 2021. I spent my childhood visiting / loving San Francisco and the Bay Area so this video is a welcomed find. Thank You for making it! Moving back would be perfect.

    With the exception of the unsightly overhead wiring, trolleybuses are perfect for the hills here in San Francisco.

      Also works well in Instrument Meteorological Conditions!! (crickets chirping) ..okay.
      I'm from that area. I love the tracked trolleys that run along Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf area, but I thought the trolley-buses are a bit overkill on overhead wiring. It seems they could easily get tangled up if the bus-driver turned too sharply, passed to closely to a bus going in the opposite direction, or even if they missed a turn. Not to mention that it required TWO cables to complete a circuit. If you notice, a lot of those wires are guy wires to support the energized ones over where they need to be.
      But it's still amazing watching how they work and how they pull off to the curb to pick up passengers and then merge back into the lanes. I just hope they keep the tree branches trimmed!

      Zarya@ Streetcars are also noisy. I liked it when I was a baby & kid visiting S.F. Never had to actually live on a line as an adult living in S.F. Look up Rockridge in Oakland for an ideal hood to live in close to S.F. I live in beautiful Monterey now.

    • @dood1e678
      @dood1e678 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's just like the noise of a fridge (or TV, if you live with inconsiderate people, trams, trains, a highway (I constantly hear the humming of cars and trucks passing by where I live), or any other monotone noise) - you get used to it and it no longer wakes you up.
      The worst I experienced is living above a pub/club. Besides the music, someone will drink too much and sing or yell profanities. Since that happens at different times and the voices are different, it is much more likely than a means of transport or a fridge to wake one up.
