I have a 1908 Mosin Nagant that would make 50 meter shot difficult as it has the original factory barrel. After two world wars and most likely a few others in between, the bore is totally screwed. I can still see a little rifling, but it key holes at 50 meters and have a pattern of a little bigger then that block.

Soldiers serve their country, and follow orders. Most don't hate their enemy; in fact, most would probably be friends, sharing stories of home, what they like, their wives or girlfriends, etc. Politicians should be required to do the fighting, and dying. In retired US Army, served multiple tours 7n Vietnam, but never hated the NVA or VC. Didn't hate the Soviet bloc during the Cold War. Just served, and prayed i would never have to go to war again; or my sons, either. Respect to all who serve their country

I would be curious to see the same analysis done for the 6.5 mm x 52 bullet for the Mannlicher-Carcano '91 rifle.
In Italy the reversed cartridge trick originated a figure of speech "avere le palle girate", which literally means "to have reversed bullets/cartridges" and actually means "to be in a bad mood".
This rather iconic rifle was also the "cecchino" rifle, where "cecchino" originated from Francesco "Cecco" Giuseppe, Emperor of the Austro- Hungarian Empire at the time, literally meaning "little Cecco", and used to indicate Austro-Hungarian (mainly from Tyrol) snipers, whose aim whose infamously accurate.

@@aryanson I confirm about the term "dum-dum" bullits. I think that the gelatine does not totally show the devastation these bullits cause in real flesh. It's the hydrostatic shock that is missing in the account. I mention this because testimonies describe that the bullet makes a normal small entry wound but leaves a gaping hole of an exit wound. I doubt that any hit around the center mass could leave a chance of survival. Good thing that they are prohibited in the field. Their effect is definitely horrible and unnecessary.

Depends on the type of steel in the shielding. The velocity available will not produce spalling on most any modern steel. The 'ordinary' steel of the WWI era? Maybe. I've never checked. Not to exclude some troops trying it.

ShinyPartsUp The original cartridge was 8x50r but the m95/30's are converted to 8x56r to give them more velocity. They kick worse than a Mosin carbine. From the USA, I greatly enjoyed the video. The altered bullets deformed and actually fragmented more than I would have expected. In the USA cartridge reloaders in past years would with the .38spl turn hollow base wadcutters backwards to present the hollow base pointing forward in the .38 spl revolvers before modern expanding bullets were available. Another trick in revolvers was was to use overly long bullets of 200 grain wt instead of a normal 130 to 158 grain bullets that would not be properly stabilized and would so tumble. The british used 200 grain loads in the 38-200 loading for the webley revolver and I suspect that it tumbles also. Some countries made the nose of rifle bullets very light, perhaps with an air pocket in the point area of the bullet so that it will not be stable and quickly tumble upon striking flesh. 5.56 nato bullets often tumble in flesh.

Mannlicher was a genius.. I owned a Hungarian M98 and disassembled it to see how it operates. IMO, there's no way this rifle can fire without being locked up. It's just as safe as a bolt action rifle.

I didn't realize that the X-heading would increase the results quite so dramatically. Nice demo. I know the 8x50 and 8x56 are pretty respected rounds, and they hit hard with their heavy bullets. Straight pulls are very interesting to me. A few years ago i picked up a half sporterized Ross through a friend. I need to start working with it. I have a No. 4 Mk1 SMLE too, so my .303 base is covered. I enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work

The really long range settings on the sights are for volley fire. A bunch of soldiers shoot at a general area and lay waste to a large swath rather than an individual soldier trying to hit a specific target. It was used when artillery wasn't available.

I am amazed at the amount of damage those small notches in the tip caused. I have to wonder, when using those long, round-nosed bullets, if one were to sand a flat spot, say about the size of 1/4 of the nose, if that would cause the bullet to tumble almost upon impact. The sideways profile of the bullet would be significantly larger than that of any expanded round, the point of impact should not be affected within reasonable range, and as the bullet doesn't expand, it wouldn't violate that troublesome Hague Convention. Anyway, this was a most excellent video full of a lot of very interesting information. I do so love old cartridges. Thanks for all your hard work.

Mannlicher is legendary riffle in Bulgaria, with witch our army fought the two world wars. It was used in Bulgarian army till 80-s. With very strong shot and punctual. It is mentioned in a lot of songs.

This is in contrast with the video of hippies, fats, and Russians shooting full-automatic rifles on the ranch. ( I like Mr. Hickok's videos, they are educational )

Officers and soldiers of the Dutch colonial army (KNIL) in the Dutch East Indies used ammo with crosses on the point or the point shaven or drilled away in the M95 Steyr/Hembrug 6,5 mm Mannlicher carbines to effectively hunt wild boar. The 6,5 mm bullets were similar in shape to the bullets shown in this movie (so no 'spitzer' bullets!).
