*According to the Russian version of Wikipedia, Tamara is sung by Olga Kashevarova. If so, then it is an unknown young actress miming her voice (Kashevarova would have been 54 in 1960). Alternately, one knowledgeable poster to TH-cam has stated that the voice is that of Elizaveta Shumskaya. Still another claims that Tamara is sung by Elena Shumilova. As the credits from the telefilm are missing and presumably were originally given (like that of the same director's telefilm of "Dubrovsky") as a voiceover at the beginning of the broadcast, I am not currently aware of any source from which to verify the identity of the cast.

The custom subtitles are based upon the translation by Juan Gherzi.
The narrative extracts from the original poem by Mikhail Lermontov were subtitled by Philipp Reznikov (sub-opera.narod..., substituting the equivalent lines in English from a 19th-century translation (the author of which is unknown).

Два корифея в одной опере: Отс и Лемешев! Это просто праздник какой-то!!! Какие фильмы показывали по телевизору в СССР! Вот это была культурная политика, просвещали народ, люди в колхозах узнавали солистов оперы по радио на слух....
Сейчас часто по Культуре идут оперы, есть два крупных классических радиоканала, но никому не нужно...

Georg Ots had an impressive vocal; Lemeshev was magic. Two the greatest opera vocalists.

the 3rd aria moved me deeply. this underrated opera contains in itself all the beauty a human being can bare.
Thank you for this. What ravishing music. I can't think why this opera is not better known. Ots and Lemeshev are spectacular. This looks like a TV film. Seems the Soviets made a lot of films in the 60s of the greatest Russian operas. Iolanta is another good one.
The best tribute imaginable to freedom, to beauty... to Lermontov.

Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it. Yes, this is a heavily condensed telefilm version of the opera. A complete performance would run a little over two hours. Sadly, this is the only one of Rubinstein's many operas that is still performed occasionally (albeit only in Central and Eastern Europe and almost always with cuts to the score). In the past decade, however, the last of his sacred operas, "Christus," has enjoyed a very limited revival.
