Martin, it’s so GREAT to see you back out in the shop! I fell and broke my back in 2019 and had a 5-disc fusion to repair. The nerve damage from the accident left me with neuropathy tingling in back and groin and bad burning in my feet. I know exactly what you are speaking of about being drained from the effort but please know it is appreciated very much. You have amazing talent in the foundry and at video making. So thank you for your perseverance - I pray it brings you joy being back in the shop and I pray that the pain will be managed better soon for you!
Robert. A 5 disc fusion OMG - you have my sympathies. What has this done to your flexibility? I have had one fusion (a Ti plate) in my neck and 5 laminectomies lower down, now a fusion T12- L1 has been suggested as a possible cure for some of the pain - I am dubious. It is nice to be back in the shop - I crave to be there doing stuff but can only manage it briefly every day or so.... Martin
@@olfoundryman8418 It was quite an ordeal. It has only minimally reduced my flexibility. My injury was a 50% compression fracture of L1. I’m 185cm tall so for stability they had to go 2 above and 2 below so my fusion is T11-L3. Surgery and circumstances are different for all but I will say that the lower back pain I’d had from previous strain injuries of a younger me were solved. But for the neuropathy and slight reduction in motion, I’d have no issues. I’m lucky that 7 months to the day after the injury I was released 100% back to work. Appointment with podiatrist next week to see if they’re any help. Go at the pace your body tells you in the shop!!
Robert Yes, that really sounds like a barrel of laughs 😱 but at least the outcome was reasonable and worth the trauma of going through it. Your good result has encouraged me to proceed at least as far as talking to the surgeon I have been referred to re the possibility of a fusion. I can ask about the possibility of success and how much success and then decide.... Martin

Thanks for posting. Brain researchers say that there are 2 things your brain rewards you for: reducing pain and making progress. I wonder if making videos would mitigate the pain or at least give you motivation. Sharing a lifetime of foundry knowledge is something few people can do. Those videos are already your legacy. There is very little content like yours! ALSO, for back pain, learning the dead lift seems to do wonders. Unfortunately doctors seem to know very little about this sort of thing. The Barbell Prescription by Sullivan and Baker is a good starting point. Looking forward to Part 8!

Alan, To be honest the wooden jig may have flexed a bit so as I suggest in the video if you can weld one up from steel it might be better. Either way though, it did not take much to make the jig.... Martin

Getting more out of a machine than the machine thought he could deliver... by having a larger brain! :-) About the necessary effort... pain and I are old friends, and I'm sure there are others of us here. Tobho, Yep, you sure have that right, and I always knew it. For the boxes I have used for years I used a lathe and milling machine to do this work. This made it easier and likely more accurate but it was still slow and with great care needed. I cut the slots with a slitting saw (about 3 mm thick) mounted between a chuck and a center in my lathe. Each box side was clamped to the tool post. I had predrilled the inner end hole and just cut the slots too it. I took care and sometime incrementing the box side a little sideways a few times to get the slot just the right width. However in the spirit of no fancy machine tools I will hand file the slots - should be fun but I have already thought of a method for recovering an "overfiled" slot should that happen (likley, I suspect)..... Mark, Yes, the pain is a bother - it sucks everything out of you. You are not wrong about the table flex, if unsupported the table can move a lot and it can even move (but not as much) when blocked up because if one goes at it too hard the column of the press will "arch its back". I do have a couple of rigid machines that would have done this job nicely but in the spirit of hand tools and a drill press only I could not use them. How goes the speaker business?... Martin

Don't bother changing your drill speed back up to 1500, just use it slow, for the few seconds you will save due to faster drill speed you will waste in belt changing and annoyance, drills pretty well like slow unless they are really small
d. laszlo. My friend, considering your own superb skill level you honour me greatly with your comment. In truth they are not that good. Two years ago when I made them my back was already giving me a lot of trouble and I rather rushed making these castings. Some I should have remelted and years ago I would have but pain forces one to cut corners 😰. Use them? Of course you would (I hope) and I like to think that you would enjoy doing so..... Martin
Ben enjoying this series. I'm so glad I subbed to your channel a while back. I'm wondering if one had a lathe if just putting a groove in those pins would work well. Also perhaps a copper / nickel plating to prevent having to do the care and maintenance of a rustable part? Would it be worth skimming the boxes flat in a mill? Too much work at some point? Any thoughts on the design now that you have them? Perhaps an improvment that would auto-square them? (Guessing that would require some machined inter-locking angles work.)
Ferrari, Thank you for subbing. I am not sure what you mean by "just putting a grove in those pins" Can you explain in more detain please? Re corrosion of the pins ;- it's an issue but not really much of a serious one. Hardened steel is surprisingly resistant to corrosion if kept dry much more resistant than is mild steel. From time to time particularly in not used much the pins do pick up a little rust I simply quickly rub them with some fine (#240) abrasive paper and they are ok. You could plate them to improve the resistance but the plate needs to be hard - some types of Ni plate are probably hard enough but chrome might be better as it is "non grabby" A good source of cheap pins might be old telescopic shock absorbers these are hardened steel and are hard chrome plated if they could be found the required diameter and not worn they would make very superior pins. In the last part of this series I do intend covering some ways of improving the boxes particularly if one has the necessary equipment. These will include - as you suggest - skimming flat in a mill, milling the 45 degree corners to exactly 45 degrees, Plus a few other little tricks. I have thought of possible mods to the design but mainly they are (so far) to improve appearance rather than function... Martin

I was thinking more of a circular depression around where the setscrews contact the pins rather than just a notch on one side, that way it wouldn't matter what orientation you drop them in at. But to do that evenly one would have to grind/cut while the pin was turning - hence a lathe.. but I suppose it could be done in a drill press while grinding on one spot. Looking forward to the next episode!
Ferrari, Sort of like a circlip groove while it might have the advantage of easy pin placement it would not be easy to do and would require not only the lathe but some sort of tool post mounted grinding spindle..... Martin
I wonder if you can build the side of these boxes by simply bending two 45 degree angles on the ends of wide bar stock? You can then bolt two or more of them together and weld or bolt on the fixing pin brackets. It might be simpler and faster to construct. There may be, however, an issue with a resulting internal corner bend radius. A possible solution is to use a 90 degree bends such they overlap externally.
Bob, Yes, when I first thought of this series I did think of something along the lines that you have suggested. I do think that it is possible and I have in fact half planned a quick one off video on something like this - if and only if I can get the materials I need in the required sizes at a reasonable price. Always remember that you need to allow for good sand retention - it might be difficult to get this with flat bar. I would suggest that the corners be made from metal angle pieces rather than bending the flat bar..... Martin
@@olfoundryman8418 I forgot to mention that years ago a TH-camr created a modular moulding box system. It was cast from a 3D printed model. It wasn't a popular channel and I forgot the name.
Bob, I have a pretty good idea of who you are referring too and he shall remain nameless. It is someone who I conversed with a lot during his early casting efforts - I like to think that I helped him. During our conversations I mentioned my intention to do a series on making metal moulding boxes. I even shared the basic design and the proposed use of 3D printing for pattern work. My health issues had started by then and I was very slow to begin my series. The "friend" took it upon himself to usurp my idea and released his video series. He made a moderately fair box. He was immediately copied by one of his countrymen who made a complete hash of the idea. I am still amazed and hurt by the fact that someone I thought a trusted friend would knowingly steal an idea mentioned in private communications. I know YT is a dog eat dog world but the lengths some will go to, to publish a video, any video, about anything regardless of their own knowledge base never ceases to amaze and indeed disgust me. Needless to say I no longer converse with the culprit and it would seem that he has been largely absent from YT for the last couple of years - Hooray..... Martin
@@olfoundryman8418 I have no reason to doubt your account. I searched and found the videos and it was shamelessly identical to yours. I did find it odd that he released them around the same time you released your first videos. He gave credit to an unnamed viewer for suggesting an improvement to the design and mentioned it was out of academic "honor" which leads me to suspect he has no honor. He does have a strong whiff of sleaze to him. I think he was trying to make a name for himself on TH-cam, but like a wolf, he wandered away to find easier prey. I must say, Paul of "Paul's Garage", who will be named, spoke highly of you. He's embarking on a series to complete his Gingery Lathe . He told his audience not to take casting instructions from any TH-camrs with the exception of Olfoundryman. I would leave him a shout out in his comments. I believe it's the second to last video he released.
Bob, I think that he actually beat me to the punch by a bit as I was so slow to start my series of. But no matter what's done is done and he seems to have faded away - from casting anyway. Thanks for the tip about Paul. I found the video concerned and will go back to it and leave a shout for his lovely comment. I just need to check on a few things to do with what he is attempting because there are some problems with the alloy he intends to use that he may not have allowed for. Paul is somewhat unusual in the YT foundry scene as he is actually trying to do it right, and it's good to see.... Martin
Stu. I understand that they are defunct. A friend who ran a fair sized foundry near me sold out to a NZ company and went there to work for them. I got confused very quickly as to exactly what I need as electronics etc. is not (regrettably) my area of expertise. I have a knowledgeable friend who can assist though so I will see what he says.... Mike, I recently started to "clean up" to save my sons from having to do it when I fall off the perch. Not planning on doing this quite yet but the day inevitably draws ever closer. One of the first things to go was my collection of 3 phase motors. I have 3 phase connected so I had more than a score or so motors of various sizes - all went in the rubbish bin 😱. BigstackD might have liked them but he is thousands of miles away. They were all too big for a drill press like this anyway. Sadly I am not fit enough to go down the road of obtaining a suitable 3 phase motor plus VFD and doing the necessary fitting. Certainly though, I do agree that fitting a VFD would be the best way to go if I was using the drill press much - it actually sat there for 2 years (yes, 2 years) set up to do the box drilling but not used because I did not wish to disturb the table setup. - I do have two other drill presses.... htral, No not much fun is it? Hard to do much - could bomb out with Oxy I guess but hard to do much then either -best to just grin and bear it - maybe?.... Martin
Htral, I find that if I stop the Meloxicam I get very stiff. I have tried to stop a few times but after about a week I am so rigid that I have little option to go back on them, but I always take with food. I too sufferer the not walking much or well but it is bad as you just get weaker all the time and everything gets harder to do. I try (mostly unsuccessfully) to force myself to keep moving - lodge is a crock.... Martin

Hope your back to normal soon. I made some aluminum flasks a few years ago. Never thought about a youtube video to show the process. I do have one more size to make. Patterns are done just need to make some castings. Maybe some day. And old age does suck.
Roscoe, You missed an opportunity there 😊 but do a video of that remaining size as more ideas out there never hurts. Yep old age is a crock but they say that the alternative isn't much good either - hmm - some days I am not so sure about that.... Martin

Don't bother changing your drill speed back up to 1500, just use it slow, for the few seconds you will save due to faster drill speed you will waste in belt changing and annoyance, drills pretty well like slow unless they are really small

d. laszlo. My friend, considering your own superb skill level you honour me greatly with your comment. In truth they are not that good. Two years ago when I made them my back was already giving me a lot of trouble and I rather rushed making these castings. Some I should have remelted and years ago I would have but pain forces one to cut corners 😰. Use them? Of course you would (I hope) and I like to think that you would enjoy doing so..... Martin
Ben enjoying this series. I'm so glad I subbed to your channel a while back. I'm wondering if one had a lathe if just putting a groove in those pins would work well. Also perhaps a copper / nickel plating to prevent having to do the care and maintenance of a rustable part? Would it be worth skimming the boxes flat in a mill? Too much work at some point? Any thoughts on the design now that you have them? Perhaps an improvment that would auto-square them? (Guessing that would require some machined inter-locking angles work.)

Re corrosion of the pins ;- it's an issue but not really much of a serious one. Hardened steel is surprisingly resistant to corrosion if kept dry much more resistant than is mild steel. From time to time particularly in not used much the pins do pick up a little rust I simply quickly rub them with some fine (#240) abrasive paper and they are ok. You could plate them to improve the resistance but the plate needs to be hard - some types of Ni plate are probably hard enough but chrome might be better as it is "non grabby" A good source of cheap pins might be old telescopic shock absorbers these are hardened steel and are hard chrome plated if they could be found the required diameter and not worn they would make very superior pins. In the last part of this series I do intend covering some ways of improving the boxes particularly if one has the necessary equipment. These will include - as you suggest - skimming flat in a mill, milling the 45 degree corners to exactly 45 degrees, Plus a few other little tricks. I have thought of possible mods to the design but mainly they are (so far) to improve appearance rather than function... Martin

I was thinking more of a circular depression around where the setscrews contact the pins rather than just a notch on one side, that way it wouldn't matter what orientation you drop them in at. But to do that evenly one would have to grind/cut while the pin was turning - hence a lathe.. but I suppose it could be done in a drill press while grinding on one spot.

Ferrari, Sort of like a circlip groove while it might have the advantage of easy pin placement it would not be easy to do and would require not only the lathe but some sort of tool post mounted grinding spindle..... Martin
I wonder if you can build the side of these boxes by simply bending two 45 degree angles on the ends of wide bar stock? You can then bolt two or more of them together and weld or bolt on the fixing pin brackets. It might be simpler and faster to construct. There may be, however, an issue with a resulting internal corner bend radius. A possible solution is to use a 90 degree bends such they overlap externally.
Bob, Yes, when I first thought of this series I did think of something along the lines that you have suggested. I do think that it is possible and I have in fact half planned a quick one off video on something like this - if and only if I can get the materials I need in the required sizes at a reasonable price. Always remember that you need to allow for good sand retention - it might be difficult to get this with flat bar. I would suggest that the corners be made from metal angle pieces rather than bending the flat bar..... Martin
@@olfoundryman8418 I forgot to mention that years ago a TH-camr created a modular moulding box system. It was cast from a 3D printed model. It wasn't a popular channel and I forgot the name.
Bob, I have a pretty good idea of who you are referring too and he shall remain nameless. It is someone who I conversed with a lot during his early casting efforts - I like to think that I helped him. During our conversations I mentioned my intention to do a series on making metal moulding boxes. I even shared the basic design and the proposed use of 3D printing for pattern work. My health issues had started by then and I was very slow to begin my series. The "friend" took it upon himself to usurp my idea and released his video series. He made a moderately fair box. He was immediately copied by one of his countrymen who made a complete hash of the idea. I am still amazed and hurt by the fact that someone I thought a trusted friend would knowingly steal an idea mentioned in private communications. I know YT is a dog eat dog world but the lengths some will go to, to publish a video, any video, about anything regardless of their own knowledge base never ceases to amaze and indeed disgust me. Needless to say I no longer converse with the culprit and it would seem that he has been largely absent from YT for the last couple of years - Hooray..... Martin
@@olfoundryman8418 I have no reason to doubt your account. I searched and found the videos and it was shamelessly identical to yours. I did find it odd that he released them around the same time you released your first videos. He gave credit to an unnamed viewer for suggesting an improvement to the design and mentioned it was out of academic "honor" which leads me to suspect he has no honor. He does have a strong whiff of sleaze to him. I think he was trying to make a name for himself on TH-cam, but like a wolf, he wandered away to find easier prey.
I must say, Paul of "Paul's Garage", who will be named, spoke highly of you. He's embarking on a series to complete his Gingery Lathe . He told his audience not to take casting instructions from any TH-camrs with the exception of Olfoundryman. I would leave him a shout out in his comments. I believe it's the second to last video he released.
Bob, I think that he actually beat me to the punch by a bit as I was so slow to start my series of. But no matter what's done is done and he seems to have faded away - from casting anyway. Thanks for the tip about Paul. I found the video concerned and will go back to it and leave a shout for his lovely comment. I just need to check on a few things to do with what he is attempting because there are some problems with the alloy he intends to use that he may not have allowed for. Paul is somewhat unusual in the YT foundry scene as he is actually trying to do it right, and it's good to see.... Martin

Stu. I understand that they are defunct. A friend who ran a fair sized foundry near me sold out to a NZ company and went there to work for them. They went under and were bought out, the friend set out on his own again. I have no idea of the latest news and how it might relate to Precision or to the friend... Matin

@@olfoundryman8418 the vfd drives I use run on 230v.single phase And convert the output to 3 phase .that way I can use cheap 3 phase industrial motors
Mike, I recently started to "clean up" to save my sons from having to do it when I fall off the perch. Not planning on doing this quite yet but the day inevitably draws ever closer. One of the first things to go was my collection of 3 phase motors. I have 3 phase connected so I had more than a score or so motors of various sizes - all went in the rubbish bin 😱. BigstackD might have liked them but he is thousands of miles away. They were all too big for a drill press like this anyway. Sadly I am not fit enough to go down the road of obtaining a suitable 3 phase motor plus VFD and doing the necessary fitting. Certainly though, I do agree that fitting a VFD would be the best way to go if I was using the drill press much - it actually sat there for 2 years (yes, 2 years) set up to do the box drilling but not used because I did not wish to disturb the table setup. - I do have two other drill presses.... @@olfoundryman8418 Not on pain killers - just don't walk much or well. I stopped the Meloxicam for similar reasons.
Htral, I find that if I stop the Meloxicam I get very stiff. I have tried to stop a few times but after about a week I am so rigid that I have little option to go back on them, but I always take with food. I too sufferer the not walking much or well but it is bad as you just get weaker all the time and everything gets harder to do. I try (mostly unsuccessfully) to force myself to keep moving - lodge is a crock.... Martin
