Congrats on getting a Toyota HIACE, and it being your first vehicle to own is really cool. I really like the Toyota HIACE, it's a popular choice as a small bus for commuting in the Caribbean. We have the same spec diesel engine, but with a manual trans and it's 2WD. It's been a great work horse us, hope it is the same for you.

I live in Canada and bought a 2005 RegiusAce (same thing) with the 2.5 turbo diesel and 4wd. I work on the Oil Rigs and commute ~1800km to work. I've driven through all kinds of weather, through mud pits, up a mountain made of sand, sleet, slush, black ice. Everything. It will start in -40C weather, may need a small booster because of the battery but it always started. It is a great vehicle and is probably one of my favorite. The only downside is because of the weight distribution and the small wheelbase, it tends to bounce a lot over bumps. If someone offered me a new free American pickup truck or the van, I'd pick the van because i know it will last. It has over 300,000kms on it and still looks and drives like new.

I love driving vans because you are directly over the front wheels and Hiaces are great vans. The only downside driving one is that they tend to rock back and forth, presumably because of the elongated wheel base. Good choice 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Yes, HIACE is a very popular vehicle. Here in Sri Lanka there are variety of HIACEs. From old to newer version, from flat roof to hi-roof. We have a nick name for the newer HIACEs, we call these KDH. Also HIACEs are very durable. The company I'm currently working, own two HIACEs. The older one is a flat roof and it's now 12 years old. It has run more that 700,000 KMs and is still running in good condition. It's a marvelous piece of machine made by Toyota.

Nice van 👍🏻 here in the U.K. the VW Transporter is the most popular camper van it’s also available as 4wd, look forward to your interior mods for car camping (diesel heater maybe). My U.K. spec Hilux has cold weather spec, two batteries, power heat, which is an electric heater element in the heater to provide warmth during prolonged idling in cold weather, also helps de icing too.
