On the topic of heckling the audience, there is a lovely story about Dee Snider getting a crowd in the eighties to repeatedly shout "fuck you!" to a section of the crowd that refused to stand up for Twisted Sister. He later learnt that it was the handicap section.

Did you see the outcome of the Dean lawsuit Glen? Theyve been ordered to stop selling their traditional V and explorer models, which is ridiculous as Dean have sold these lines for decades. Judge also instructed Dean to pay 335k of legal fees for the hearing (Dean and Gibson lawyer costs), I think it's a joke

The US legal system is a complete farce at this point - granting a rent-seeking "lifestyle brand" who abandoned their trademarks a half century ago damages and an injunction over what amounts to public domain generic shapes is egregious; what makes it moreso is that Dean, who has arguably made V- and Explorer-shaped instruments continuously for almost as long as Gibson (let that sink in - Gibson only really scaled up production in 1975), and done more to popularize them, is getting their legs ripped off here.

I’m pretty sure the lawsuit is the only reason Dave moved from Dean to Gibson; either way, Dave’s Dean guitars (at least the one I have) is pretty damn solid and got it used for less than half retail. Kinda wish Glenn would check the VMNTs out to see if they were better than Dave’s Gibson models….

Yeah man, it's getting real bad in the US for worker rights and wages. I'm currently in the process of moving back in with my dad, because he can't keep up with the cost of living as a homeowner, and I can't keep up with the cost of living as an apartment renter. We're both hard workers, too - my dad's been supporting a wife and kids on his own for decades, and I've never been fired. Been employed steadily since I was 18, and going to be 29 in a few months. Yet, neither of us earn enough to live on our own, no matter where we go. So yeah - it's bad in the US, and it's only getting worse.

There is more to it than just that. If you weren't alive at that time then you might not know. We had a horrible recession with a nasty inflation issue caused by.. you guessed it...jimmy carter the peanut head and the democrats. Just as they do every time they are in full power they destroy the economy...just like today with brandon and the fartsack democrats. Companies had little options available to them and business had to find a way or they would collapse completely. Japanese car quality was NOT that good but they did make small engines on a small super light frame that gave them good gas mileage. Japanese steel was awful and within 2 years of purchasing one you would have rust bubbles under the paint. They engines were okay and easy to work on but again, not a lot of power.
We also had the same issue with gas. Once again, the democrats created a fuel problem and we the people, paid the price. It was a better decision to buy the cheap japanese crap than drive a bigger and better gas guzzler.
I had a '67 Ford Galaxy 500. Excellent quality and a 390 engine that was a beast...but drank so much fuel. This was about '82. My dad had a brand new Olds which also had fantastic quality and a slightly better fuel efficient engine. Other people I knew that had japanese cars were trying to keep them running and were having a hard time at it. Everything was wearing out on them. 75 datsuns were the worst. I think what glenn is talking about are the "K" cars that were being manufactured in response to the japanese cars. It was a mirror reflection of the production quality of the japanese manufacturer. Small engines, poor steel for construction, hence cheap. These things fell apart just as much as the japanese vehicles did.

The ability to switch speakers (and use different mics) is one of the two reasons I switched to silent recording with a Torpedo Captor. I now have one amp, but I have access to hundreds of cab IR’s, each cab captured with several mics at several distances. As much as I love the experience of mic’ing a real cab, silent guitar recording is the absolute best for people like me who live in an apartment building with cardboard walls.

To the 1 pickup vs 2 or 3 pickup question. "Allegedly" as the string vibrates the magnet in the neck or middle pickup can affect the way the movement. I think the only way to test this is with a high speed camera. Also you'd need a robot to consistently hit the string with the same power and in the same spot. Seems like a lot of effort for what might not have 1/10th of an effect. The only REAL advantage I can see to 1 pickup vs 2 or 3 pickups is saving on battery life if they are active pickups.

    • @charlotteice5704
      @charlotteice5704 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Just looking at the way the electronics work, I doubt it has any impact at all. Pickups detect motion of the strings, not the position of the strings. The pull of amagnet is permanent, so additional magnets only theoretically change the position of the strings, but they don't cause any movement of the strings. Yes, you could theoretically argue that additional magnetic pull negatively impacts the strings' ability to move, but those forces are completely negligible in comparison to the force you're exerting on the strings by picking, so the impact is practically zero and completely negated by differences in picking strength anyways.

A guy called Will on a channel called Willseasyguitar debunked this like 5 years ago.. He also totally shot down the entire 'ToneWood' mouthbreather debate too , like there are people out there that think certain woods have their own EQ, give me a break!! and also he proved that the 24.75 Gibson and 25.5 Fender scale causes no discernable difference to tone by building a plank guitar with bridge pins in the positions for either scale.. Literally a single strum of all open strings sustains for about 42 seconds or whatever it was regardless of presence of a neck pickup or not, I think he had to get a pretty strong electromagnet under there before he saw any appreciable difference.

As someone who worked on an audio codec, of course they all sound different. They are more different in noise characteristics than anything else. There is also a minimal phase or zero phase lowpass filter with different characteristics from the down sampling process.
They usually work by sampling a 1 bit value at a much higher rate (oversampling) and add it into a counter. The counter acts like a CIC filter which you use series of halfband filters to reduce the rate to 48K, all while controlling the noise produced by the reflected Nyquist frequencies at each step. There are a lot of different types of halfband filters at different orders, you will see either see a zero phase or minimal phase impulse response depending on if iir or fir filter were used.

Just got one of my gibson set-up under warranty.
Strings were catching in nut slots, nut was too high. So the string angle slots were re-filed, nut height filed down. Neck adjustment, professionally intonated for half-step down tuning. Bridge height and pickups adjusted. Nut lubricant, and oiled the fretboard. Cleaned and polished by a professional.
Set-up was done at the local store where I purchased the guitar.
The action was pretty good and it was quite Playable, but kept going out of tune after hitting it hard and string bending lead work.
Now it's a different animal. Stays in tune much better. Nut slots were filed for the angle of the strings and string gauge. Etc.
Don't over look a professional set-up by a professional tech or luthier.
Your milage may vary. But now I can beat to hell out of it. And from the G string onward takes while to loose pitch and tuning.
Otherwise i was looking at a device called the string butler for les Paul's.
It has mini rollers on it and after the nut it re-aligins the strings so they are straight before going into the break angle into the string slots. Everyone's milage may vary with those as well. But the idea is it allows the string to easily roll back into pitch after a bend and fixes the extreme break angle in the les paul.
The nuts aren't always the right height or filed correctly straight out of factory cheap or expensive.
A proper look over and professionally done job by a tech can make the whole difference in the world.
For les paul owners, epiphone owners or les paul copy owners.
And anyone in general buying a brand new guitar.
If your store offers a free set up with purchase take advantage of it. If not shell out the cash and see and hear the difference.
In most cases it can fix most tuning and intonation issues if you are having any. Also imperative for studio and live work for whichever tuning and string gauge you plan to use.
Everyone in the band should have a professional set up to keep intonation and tuning in check with more than one guitar and the bassist as well. You will play and sound better as a whole unit.
    Cheers!

Relish Guitars, while REALLY EXPENSIVE, have magnets on their pickup rings so that all you have to do is remove the backplate and swap the pickup without any soldering. Heck, they can even redesign a pickup of your request to fit that function.
I think that for whom has the time and money to dispute whether or not pickups (the type, the string placement, the price, and how many) impact the tone, they'd consider this option.
Unless it recently came to the news that the company is a sham and I haven't been in-touch about it.

The whole 1 pickup vs. 2 pickups thing actually started with Gibson. Some guitar players think the Les Paul Junior sounds better than the Les Paul Special, because the Junior don’t have a neck pickup, so it’s supposedly less pull on the strings from the magnet of 1 x P-90 vs. 2 x P-90’s. It all started with the vintage stuff. Personally I think it’s just the fact that back in the day, everything was actually hand built, so you had tone variation from pickups to pickups because you had different people winding them by hand, so production was not really consistent.

My favourite, which only 1 in 100 seem to get, is 'I'd like to thank everyone that came tonight! Those that didn't, thanks for being here anyway!'.

    Ave Glenn!
Going back to tonewood thing. I think there is still one thing missing from the equation. Speakers most important agree, pickups and mic as well. But I think that pickup placement is in the same way important as mic placement is. I've been testing some Schecter KM-7s. One important change Sir Keith made was that he asked schecter to move the bridge pickup closer to the bridge... I did noodle on first gen KM-7 and comparable other Schecter, both nazgul equpped, and they sounded different through same amp.
Maybe that is something you could explore.

Just remember, the wattage of the 412 will be 4 times the lowest rated speaker, so if there's a 30w speaker in there it'll still blow if you run more than 120w. And make sure you match the impedance rating if you don't wanna do math lol

Not a stupid idea. There’s a great channel by a guy called Johan Seeborn (or something similar) about different guitar speakers.
G12H blackbacks and G12M greenbacks go very well together. G12-65s are great too. An alternative is to get something like the Grossman FatBox isocab and have 3 or 4 speakers on standby. Very easy to swap them around and then reamp the same performance through different speakers and then blend to taste.

Hi Glenn! Regarding your comments about wanting to get the consumer experience when buying Harley Benton, I thought I'd share my experience. Ordered the R458 BK fan fret about 4 months ago ($250 USD shipped to my door). I gotta say I was fairly pleased. Paint job was good, just needed a minor truss rod adjustment, and I've been having fun with it. I just replaced the pickups a couple days ago with some EMG 808s, and it's turned into a pretty nice guitar for the price. PS: just ordered ELE and boy is that fun!!

So, my band recently played a small venue in downtown. I play in a progressive rock band, and my tone (especially my lead tone) has a LOT of mids, so I have a good cut in my sound. Every other venue we play and in the practice space my tone is exactly how I want it. In this particular venue, the mids were completely sucked out of both guitars and the bass. I play pedals into an EVH 5150 overdrive that I use as a preamp, and go straight into the effects return of a Jet City JCA20 combo with some sort of a Celestion speaker, essentially using it as a power amp and cab. Guitarist in the other band had the same problem, and he has a Blackstar 1/2 stack. Every other place it sounds great. Is there something to certain rooms that would have a detrimental effect on the tone? Might be something worth investigating....

Regarding the Butthurt of the Week - I really hate it, when people bring slave wages to the discussion about Harley Benton instruments. First, as far as I'm aware, there has never been even a freaking RUMOR about workers being underpaid in the factories where Harley Bentons are made, and, second, people only bring this up when it is about cheap brands. When was the last time anyone saw this argument being used against, let's say, buying Cort instruments? Because their workers in Korea actually protested against a whole bunch of crap about a decades ago. (Including but not limited to mass lay-offs.) Cort's factories don't only produce Cort instruments, btw, they also produce Gibsons, Fenders, PRSes...
Also, just to share my experience.
I have two Harley Benton instruments - a bass and a guitar. The guitar arrived in excellent condition, and it played well right out of the box, but the strings it came with were horrible and I broke one within half an hour after I started playing. Other than that - an excellent and good looking instrument. Eventually, I lowered the string action a bit, but, other than that and adjusting the intonation once after I put on thicker strings, I haven't had to do any setting up.
The bass had fret sprout. I dealt with that in about 20 minutes. I filed the sticking ends off with a nail file. Also, I had to heighten the string action a bit, but, again, that was it. For the money I paid I'm more than happy.

It just needed a neck adjustment and a tuning. That's all. No flaws anywhere whatsoever. I've already dented it so it's definitely a keeper! I'm seriously considering their double neck for my next purchase.

As someone who is the same age as you Glenn I have been to hundreds of concerts myself. From Slayer to The Weeknd (Which was a surprisingly amazing show) All the big name artists always have good shows due to the budget and can make it up with a lack of stage presence. But when you have no budget it is your personality that wins the day. The bands that come to mind are Supafuzz, Taddy Porter and early Sevendust ( they are getting a bit too old to jump on trampolines now. But still great live). They all had some brief radio play (Sevendust is actually still really popular) but are etched into my mind with having that stage presence that is mainly missing now because so many bands just record in their basement and over engineer everything because everyone is so risk averse. Being afraid of our own talent merely means you will never do anything with it.

Gibson fired all of their golden era Kalamazoo workers to move down to Nashville when they built the factory there. They basically told the workers to come with them or tough luck. Gibson had to re-hire and re-train employees in Nashville with a fraction of the actual artisans that made the great guitars in Kalamazoo that gave Gibson they're legacy. Fun fact the employees left behind in the Kalamazoo factory started their ow guitar brand based off making similar Gibson models using the original equipment in the original factory named Heritage guitars, in which Gibson proceeded to sue them because...Gibson.
Maybe you should review a Heritage guitar to see if the original Kalamazoo plant and workers beat out what is coming out of Nashville today.

The fingerboard wood was dry for both of them (need to oil it, nothing crazy), setup is sorely needed, maybe swap electronics if you have stock ones. The fusion tele is miles ahead the other one (also costing more than double), and some rough features appear, mostly the neck joint slot is cut roughly and the battery slot sticks out, but the guitar sounds and plays great. One has sn unknown Duncan in the neck and I ripped the neck pickup out of the other with the eventual intention to replace it. I have noticed the 2 X2N's do sound different, but there are limitations. They are obviously different guitars with different electronics, if that even matters. The pick-ups themselves may be the same model but were made years a part and neither is anything close to new; one is from the 80', one from the 90's. It would be interesting if Glen would take on this experiment but eliminate the variables I have in my set up. If the pick-ups are identical I don't forsee a shift in tone, but I could be proven wrong.

Glenn, I believe as a former auto worker yourself you probably didn't mean to blame the workers for the decline in American automobiles starting fifty years ago, but there have been some phenomenal studies on what really brought down the big carmakers. They broke apart the centralized/integrated production model that they had once pioneered in order to weaken the threat of strikes by UAW. Dispersing manufacturing jacked up prices while Japanese manufacturers imported that centralized model, keeping labor peace by making more wage concessions to the workforce. It was more efficient, so even as wages went up, efficiency surpassed what was now being done in the states, at the very least.

Cheap MXL/Nady/Audio-Technica condensers can be surprisingly great. Hell, even some from the bigger names have affordable options in the $60-$120 US price range, like AKG, Rode, and Shure. Also, Rode Podmic is a great budget dynamic mic for studio. I still use those cheap Behringer SM58 knock offs for live vox, lol. Also, I know you gave it a bad review, but I still love my Zoom ZDM-1 mic. I never take the wind screen off, though, because the top end gets too harsh, but blending it with any LDC for double mic'd vocals makes it sound HUGE on singing, and for screams/growls, it works phenomenally. Same thing but with an SDC works great for higher pitched vocals, like in the Chester Bennington Range, as well as female singers, especially wide range contra alto and mezzo soprano singers. I wouldn't know what to do with super high vocals, tbh.

How about a studio tour? Show us the sides of the studio and gear we are never able to see. That would be cool! Keep up the great work and once again GFY!

I have a G&L Bass, made in California....man, it is nice and was not a terrible price point for a 5 string bass, arrived needing just tiny adjustments and pretty close to in tune and is my favorite bass guitar.

Glennnn! So I got a good one for you. I was at Sam Ash buying a new pedal. When I was paying for the pedal, I was looking at the wall of Gibson Les Pauls. And I noticed two of the Les Pauls had warped pickup rings on the neck pickup. So bad, that the ring was arched enough to stick above the fretboard. I could not believe it. I pointed it out the sales guy, and he said “oh that’s an easy fix” . $2500 guitar and it left the factory that. And Sam Ash put that on their wall to sell. Unacceptable!!!!!

Does the guitar stay in tune?, sound good?, is it easy to play? Anything else is a stock market fantasy land of imagined value. I worked in a shop that dealt in vintage guitars and amps, people would get insane and dishonest, if the original solder was touched they would try to talk you down on price. I could understand if the pickups were changed to something more modern, however not the solder
