i completely agree. i am a huge fan, but this definitely wasn't one of his best. he is still, in my opinion, one of the best live performers of the decade. his performance of your body is a wonderland at the vmas 3 or 4 years back was even better than his actual song.
I don't think it's piped in, I think it's actually played by robbie mcintosh, one of the guitarists. Just like the strings are played on a synthesizer by the keyboard player, I think.

I just love his voice. I heard for the first time a song of John's a few years ago, and I haven't stopped listening to his music ever since.
