As much as I hate Otto, him being like: "This situation is shit, but we have to do the best we can now" is admirable, if shitty.

Considering the way the book was written, as a Maester compiling stories from the Targaryen using mostly unreliable sources decades, sometimes centuries after the events, does not give place to such depth. I'm loving the show precisely because of that, even GRRM praised Paddy Considine's acting giving depth to Viserys, for instance.

It doesn't make sense, and in the books we have yet another Aegon, son of Rhaegar. Jon was likely not named anything before Ned named him, or was named something closer to Visenya or Aemon (as Maester Aemon and Rhaegar worked together to decipher the ancient prophecy).

'It doesn't make sense, and in the books we have yet another Aegon, son of Rhaegar.' - Errr.... that what I was talking about, you know? My point stands both in book and series. If Lyanna had heard about her stepson's supposed demise, she might assumed that her husband no longer has an heir, and that's why she chose name Aegon. Of course, in book it is more likely Rhaegar chose some other great name like Jaehaerys or Aemon or whatever, but either way in bith book and TV show little Aegon was not among living (or so people thought) during birth of his younger half-brother. Lyanna could know this and that's why she chose name Aegon, as her son was now only heir.

I really enjoyed your reaction to this Angela, and Xander - I hope you read the comments too - great work on turning the edit around so fast and so well!
I always have an idea of what to expect. As a huge fan of the world George R.R. Martin created, I've read *all the things* multiple times (thus the user name). What impresses me most about the show are the insanely clever ways the show runner, writers, and directors are telling the story. The source material is scant (this period of time gets only a handful of chapters in Fire & Blood), the 'facts' of it are contradictory, and only the massive events are provable (in world). I've read the books enough, and been a part of the fandom long enough, I feel entitled to say that anyone arguing 'it's bad, it's not what the book said' doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.
EVEN knowing the books (yes all of them) as well as I do, I enjoy the discovery of what HotD has decided to do in each episode. In this one, the fate of the Cargyll twins as a 'known point' of the story, meant their deaths were only a matter of time, but, the show managed to give two names in history enough character that I cared about them. Despite being on different sides of the matter, both men have been given integrity, honor, steadfastness, and loyalty. As the episode drew toward the inevitable climax, I was *pleading* with the screen to "please let history be wrong, please let history be wrong..." and my existing dislike for Cole is now a seething hatred, for having led not one, but TWO good men to their deaths.
Incredible writing. Incredible acting. Incredible direction. I am LOVING this show.

Have you seen the first pics of the new Game of Thrones show, Dunk and Egg? It will be placed around 100 years before the original series (or some decades after House of the Dragon) and will follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, and his squire Egg. Won't say much more because of spoilers, but if they follow the published stories it'll be a treat. Also, GRRM said that probably the other stories he had in mind to write will rather be seen on the screen.
If you want a breakdown about that beginning, I suggest watching the video from the channel Alt Shift X, he makes explanation videos since the days of Game of Thrones and also talks about the books, although specifically for the series episodes he avoids future spoilers, so non-book readers can watch them. The beginning of the video for HotD S2E1 explains the tapestry.
And about the smallfolk characters that were presented: you'll need to wait and see. Trust me, it'll be wild.

@@funnylilgalreacts Yes!! Great point. That scene when she comes across her son, all broken down and crying...lingers on a bit, then just exits the room, right?!
      Alicent is definitely Otto's daughter.
Speaking of Otto, I was riffing off of his comments on young, uhm...roosters, shall we say...and more in a tongue in cheek sort of way, especially given the irony of Otto not exactly being an embodiment of virtue himself. I was thinking; yeah, young men can be rash and lash out but if they live long enough, they turn into Otto. 😁
Westeros is clearly a very patriarchal society.
Aegon, Aemond, Daemon, Christon (gods, I hate him so much, lol!), have been shaped by that society.
The situation with Jace and Rhaenyra is an exception to the rule and I love that it's there, emphasized, as opposed to Jon from GoT who's a typical hero stereotype, with a stepmom who despises him and a stepdad who's cold and distant - albeit understandably so.
Don't get me wrong, I liked Game of Thrones...well, most of it anyway, but the characters here seem more fleshed out, three-dimensional, complex. 👍👍

I am not worried about Baela at all, since I know future. However, I wonder - very light spoiler - wheter she and Aegon will confront on sky, since they have vendetta with each other in book in later part of story. I wonder if they are setting up their later battle, by making them meet on dragons earlier, effectively extending their storyline. 🤔 Also, remember in season 1episode 8 Aegon tried hit on Baela. I would find it incredibly poetic if girl he wanted became also his arch-nemesis, and they had multiple battles in sky, the first one being near to King's Landing, before their epic confrontation from book. ❤‍🔥❤‍🔥❤‍🔥 (Also, Baela's dragoness is of green colour so it is also very poetic that green dragons will be nemesis of Green King 👩🏾‍🦳🐉🟢🔥👨🏻‍🦳🐉🟡❤‍🔥❤‍🔥❤‍🔥)

I also must say that Alicent not hugging crying Aegon to me paralleled scee is episode 7 when Daemon leaves his daughters, not comforting them after their mother's death. It strikes to me in this episode how much Baela & Aegon are alike: Aegon was neglected by father and abused by mother, and Baela literally says in this episode that he sometimes hates Daemon. They are now both half-orphans. But there is also one big difference: while Baela could very easily challenge Rhaenyra and Jacaerys's claims and usurp throne for herself (as she is both granddaughter of former heiress Queen Who Never Was and daughter of King's brother), she is deeply loyal to them and supports her stepmother and stepbrother on each angle. Many Team Green fans say Baela should get Driftmark instead of Velaryon boys (as they are not biologically Velaryons), and Rhaenyra is "stealing" her inheritence, but does Baela ever voiced she sees this like that or that she wants Driftmark for herself? No, she has not! She extended her hand to Jacaerys when they were children, despite his 'common' look, and now as young adult she still comforts Jacaerys over his loses and she is determined to fight for his right to throne despite knowing his true paternity. She also shows she values her step-mother deeply, even over her own father. Aegon on other hand decided to choose power over his sister and nephews and he has pursued his illegitimate claim to Iron Throne. I think it's settling perfectly Aegon and Baela's future enmity with them being in similar situations as children, yet choosing radicaly different approach!

At first I was worried that the writers completey excluded Daeron from the show.. They finally mentioned my boy! When he shows up and he will, I hope they will portray him right - like in the books. For me he is not like Aegon or Aemond. He was a fairly kind, clever, and humble guy. Definitely the best among Alicen't sons. And honestly? The best among all of Viserys' kids (barring Helaena who we all love). Too bad, he was Alicent's third son. If Daeron was her eldest son then that throne would have been his. Or at the very least, Rhaenyra would have a tough time trying to defeat him. Because he's at least someone you can support for a reason beyond his so-called "birthright".
    (Spoiler for non book readers)
The toughest part with Daeron is that he is a kid - some of the worst atrocities occur directly under his watch after Tumbleton, he isn't directly committing them like Aemond burning the riverlands or Aegon's litany of dark and violent deeds, but because he is 'a Targaryen alone in the world', and a kid besides, he's unable to do anything about it. Literally just if Ormond had lived, if Aemond had not been so overly single minded on vengeance against Daemon, if Daeron hadn't burned hundreds of injured people in a Sept at Bitterbridge (😬 I can believe he set the whole town on fire by accident the way it is described, especially considering how disgusted he is later), if Daeron's councilors had not been afraid of giving up potential dragon power and imprisoned/killed the betrayers sooner, if the men around him weren't so selfishly power hungry, things could have worked out differently. It's also possible history speaks better of him because he dies. Nonthelsss I can't wait till they give us Daeron the Daring alongside Tessarion!
This episode was an emotional roller-coaster. From watching Aegon and poor Haleana griefing over their baby boy 😢. The Daemon and Rhaenyra "fall-out". But I know Daemon will undo his mistake in the next episode. Aemond cheeks supremacy!!!The Cargyll twins duell was so emotional I can't even 😭 Ser Criston probably by now the most disliked character! 🤣 Tom Glynn Carney, Emma D'Arcy and Rhys Ifans put a god-tier performance in this episode! peak acting.

The acting this episode was phenomenal. Everyone did a fantastic job.
Aegon is a horrible person but you still feel sorry for him after seeing him angry and crying after Jaehaerys was brutally murdered. Then we’re reminded how horrible he is when he commits mass murder to kill one guilty man.
Helaena is the Green I feel the most for, she’s so sweet and innocent. She doesn’t care about politics, she just lost her son.
Typical of Otto to use the murder of Jaehaerys as a political tool. It felt good to see him lose Hand of the King and admitting Viserys was right about Aegon and that Viserys never wanted Aegon as king.
We knew Rhaenyra was going to be angry with Daemon for having Jaehaerys murdered. Regardless of intent, it was Daemon’s fault. It was good for Rhaenyra to realise she can’t trust Daemon and how selfish he is. All the murder of Jaehaerys did was vilify her and she had nothing to do with it.
It was good to see Aemond admit he regrets killing Luke and that he acted out of temper.
Criston Cole is such a hypocrite. He criticises Arryk for his dirty cloak and for guarding Aegon when Arryk is the more honourable Kingsguard. Cole is projecting, he can’t admit his oathbreaking because he’d be executed. He probably sent Arryk as a scapegoat to say he messed up so he went on this mission for redemption.
Seeing Erryk and Arryk fight was heartbreaking. Like House Targaryen, they’re divided. Erryk protected his queen but killed his twin in the process. Kinslaying is a terrible crime in Westeros and unable to live with his guilt, he takes his own life.

I think before Jaehaery's death if Aegon and Rhaenyra had been able to sit and talk, he would have handed her the crown. But thanks to Daemon, that can't happen. Book reader, but no spoilers, I swear by the Old Gods & the New!
The economy with which they've been telling us this story is truly brilliant, never a wasted scene, bit of dialogue, or character introduction. I believe we're witnessing masters at their craft.
The fracturing of the interpersonal/familial relationships on both sides is just revealing how deeply unhealthy those relationships were to begin with.
Aegon seeking a motherly figure and solace in a sex worker b/c he derides his own actual mother? Otto refusing to listen to Alicent unburden her conscience? Ailcent callously walking away from her grieving son? Aegon II shunning his Queen and the mother of his slain child??? Daemon Refusing accountability for his direct actions which caused the horrific death of an innocent kid, and then whining about his brother being afraid of his strength? (did that not sound like every asshat who defends their unpopularity by claiming "they're just jealous!") Of course culminating with the heartbreaking fight to the mutual death of the Cargyll brothers :(
Rhaenys & Corlys look like the healthiest couple in Westeros by a country mile. *To be fair, they have mutual respect and real love for each other, so #realtionshipgoals
In that vein, I'm worried for Bela, she's too bold and brave for her own good.
Oh and is there a "I hate Criston Cole & his punchable face" club? I need to sign up for that..

Another very good episode but i prefer episode 1. The thing is though criston plan wasnt that stupid because it nearly succeed if the white worm wasnt there than rhaenyra would be dead.
Ive been saying this for the longest daemon and Otto r two side of the same coin. They are upset with their kings and queens because neither listen to them, they both want to be in control, and when they not in control they both over step.
The only difference between them is that they use different tools to attack their enemies. Daemon uses the blade and otto has his tongue.
Anyone else notice the parallel with rhaenyra calling out daemon manipulation in this episode like how Alicent confront Otto with his manipulation in episode 9.
Looking forward to ur future video btw.

Small correction - the last Targ king (Dany's dad) was Aerys. Though you are right, there is another Aegon even in the show - Rhaenyra and Daemon's older son ;) everyone can be named Aegon in this family haha

Yes, name recycling is very common... many Aegons are on the family tree, and the late son Baelon was named for Viserys' father, and the late Jaherys named after the "old king" we met in the introduction of the first season. And Rhanys (a favorite of many of us) was named for one of Aegon the Conquerer's sister-wives.
