Man, I still remember when I was using KDE 1.1.2, and then KDE 2.0 was announced, and I was so excited :P ... Ah the memories :) ... Time just flies by
8 years later, are you still using KDE? What's your opinion about it now?
@@erlgr KDE Plasma 5 now is pretty stable and works well. Sure, there are some desired improvements but can't complain as my daily driver.
@@atkhan Nice, so you still daily drive it! That's awesome!
@@erlgr me too, KDE 2.0 felt like such a big step foreward - it was incredible!
Watching this in Plasms 5.27, hyped for Plasma 6 next year.
Watching this video on plasma 6 😁
Still watching this on plasma 5.27, I use Debian Trixie btw
Congratulations KDE, still looking as good now as you did 15 years ago
Made a timeline of KDE desktops since 1997. Happy birthday KDE e.V. !
I remember, KDE 1.9x(2.0 beta or RC) that came with Mandrake 7.2 in 2000 those where great experiences.
I did play with the 2.x series but it didn't work for me. I do vividly remember running svn snapshots of KDE 3.2 because that release brought KDE to the point where it was good enough for daily usage for me. KDE 3.3 brought usability improvements, 3.4 performance, 3.5 polish... Then the wait for 4.0. I bet I can collect stories from hundreds of people about each individual release but I'm quite certain it wouldn't fit in 1 minute, so I just used screenshots.
It's has come a long way. Thank God, KDE didn't do something stupid like change the whole interface like another window manager. It took a bit of screaming, curse, but I do like KDE 4.x now.
seen all of them, actually used all >= 3.3. Without kde (the software compilation) I would be locked to use windows. Free from dual boot since circa 2005.
A big thankyou and greetings for a great (not perfect, nothing is perfect) experience.
I jumped on the KDE bandwagon with my dad at 3.5. I remember hating it at first, given that I couldn't find anything and the "start menu" was completely different, but one day I decided to give it a fair shot and discovered that, if I work through it logically, I can actually find stuff really quickly. Music player in multimedia, Web browser and chat in Internet, Office suite in Office... very sensible.
Then I saw the system tray and, after a long disdain of the system tray in Windows (which was always full of crap), poked around and discovered I could remove it. I think that was it for me. I realised that I didn't have to put up with the stuff I didn't like anymore - I could just remove it.
Finally, KDE 4.0 came out, revealing a God-awful broken mess. I remember trying to launch an application from the menu and having Plasma desktop crash, just to restart without a panel. It made me curious and, with the release of 4.1 and 4.2, inspired an interest in software development with just how rapidly it was improving, and some of the great changes made even in 4.1.
Damn, old KDE looks so much better than Plasma (imo)
I was searching for such a video for a long time! Thank you man!
nice
KDE is the best for me!
Damn KDE plasma has improved a lot.
2005s kubuntu is 2020s xubuntu
0:32 Memories...
Good job on this, Jos!
good job
And now there is KDE Plasma - even prettier!
KDE Rules!
Great job!
Looking for KDE 4.2.2 (2009), I think, It better than KDE Plasma 5
-
love kde
good video, thanks ;)
KDE the very best! krulez!
KDE is great but why don't the window graphics match the look/feel and quality of the rest of the desktop? They still look like they're from 2001. They should match the taskbar look.
Alas.. 2004's #SUSE9x's 5-CD Trial mailer stole me away from my first few years of #RH8, then #fedoracore 1, 2, 3, & 4! _(In reality.. it was #SUSE's #kde default install that I loved vs my general #DesktopEnvironment differences ignorance. Only years later did I realize I'd always had the option of running kde on fedora core too.. albeit no regrets due fact that kde IS the support majority on #openSUSE. ;]]
kde the best!
