Oh that was not part of the tutorial but it's very easy to do, just go section settings > background, then add a background color and image then change the background image blend mode to overlay. Go back to background color and reduce the opacity to your liking.
I'm not sure why it's not working for you, you probably missed something or you have some other plugins installed that are causing it. I have double-checked it and it's working fine, you can download the template here: shop.wplifestyle.com/freebies

I tried to download the template in my divi's library but I am having the message "the file should not be imported in this context". Seems like I'm definitely doing something wrong 😅

CSS, it's probably possible via the theme builder but I haven't tried it yet, I will check it out and let you know.
the Position Absolute setting is not needed if tou use transparant background in the section instead of the row.
