TIP OF NOHKALIKAI FALLS | I SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THIS TREK | MEGHALAYA EP - 11

  • On this day, Joern decided to return to Shillong as he was tired from walking the last 3 days. I wasn't feeling much tired and was tempted to go back to Nohkalikai Falls which wasn't the best decision. I made it to the tip of the falls and tried to fly my drone which got dragged away by the wind and crashed around the fall.

Well i did this trek with my friends this january. It was breathtaking.
We didn't have it in our plan. Our tour of Meghalaya was almost over and we had a free day in hand. Anthony bhaiya(the guy who drove us to various tourist spots while our stay in Shillong) said, "kal apko ek mast jagah le jayenge. Surprise hai." And what a surprise it was!
The trek down to the river bed is itself challenging(at least for noobs like us!).
We went up the river bed, climbed a few small waterfalls, clicked photos and stuff. It was amazing. And returned to the place where we started. The clock read 4pm and the place got less and less crowded. I thought it was the time to return. Little did i know of the upcoming adventure.
Anthony bhaiya shouted,"chalo abhi fall's ke tip tak jayenge" and it started. And what a thrilling trek it was. As shown in the video, the arrow marks are not always right, sometimes leading you to a dead end- so we had to make our own way. After a while the trek got difficult and we had to leave 2 of our friends behind as it was getting hard. Rest of us continued and i must confess there were moments where my feet were trembling out of fear- on a way with slippery rocks, steps made of thin twigs, narrow ledges to walk where you are inches away from falling down into the river bed. Surely we were too high on adrenaline to stop there. Finally we reached the tip. What a feeling it was! I can't describe it in words. The view was amazing. We could see written on the rocks 'NOHKALIKAI 1115 ft'. We had barely been to the tip for half an hour as it started getting darker.
We could hear our 2 friends who stayed back shouting at the top of their voice to return.
And now begins the second innings of thrill- the same trek but it's getting darker! And as we reach the point on the river bed from where we started it was pitch black. And there was no single soul around us. The task now in our hand was to climb our way to the top, the same trek that took us half an hour in daylight. It was literally frightening- we were exhausted, drenched in sweat with our feet trembling. We split in three groups, i was with Anthony bhaiya. Wetook our cellphones in one hand to use as flash lights, it made it even more dificult to find balance. I lost my footing 3-4 times on the way. Even there is no straight route, one time we took a wrong diversion and met a dead end. So we had to go in reverse and start again. Every 5 mins we would shout out to see if everyone is ok. I was gasping for breath (since i am asthmatic) and halted a few times in between. But eventually we reached the top . Honestly the feeling was no less than the feeling of reaching the tip of the falls.
Will never forget this trek in my entire life. It still gives me goosebumps everytime i picture it in my mind.
If you ever visit Meghalaya don't miss out on trekking Nohkalikai falls.
Ps. At 6:16 you can see a large enough hole on his left. You know you can actually go through it(if you are not very healthy!) instead of jumping pver the rock and so we did.

Just read this comment now. I must say this has to be the longest comment I've received but its such a nice experience to hear & I could visualize Anthony bhaiya, you & rest of the guys doing this trek. It gets quite scary as it gets dark specially over there when it gets dark sooner than it does at rest of the places in India. Thank you for sharing your experience :)
