First, your bathroom is gorgeous! I'm getting ready to move from our home of 16 years and looking for decor ideas and lighting information. Your are absolutely right about east facing windows. My plants adore it. I mostly grow orchids, so I'm looking for eastern and southern exposure in our next place. Also, the summer solstice this year is June 21. It's also the best and worst day of the year in my mind. Best because it's the longest stretch of daylight; worst because we get less and less daylight from then until December 21, the winter equinox. It's so understandable why there is a festival of lights for so many religions in December!!
Thank you! I’ve about decided that having a house on a diagonal such as southeast facing would really be the most ideal situation. I also would love to have skylights, which actually were done a lot where I live back in the 70s and 80s, but then I think people finally realized skylights in an area prone to multiple hail storms a year isn’t a very good idea lol.
I realize this video is 2 years old but your video came up while I was looking for information regarding my snow bush. I believe what you might think is a Joseph’s Coat is actually a snow bush. It is related to your Hawaiian snow bush. They’re two different varieties. I live in Florida. When you google Breynia disticha you will see both types. One is green with white tips (like snow) and the other has rose, green and white leaves . They get 2 to 4 feet tall and are absolutely beautiful. They are very thirsty plants but love the sun. You wouldn’t think that because of how delicate the leaves appear but they’re pretty tough and can handle our Florida morning and early afternoon sun.
This video was very helpful for me. I watched it a few times to get a good understanding. Plus you being in Texas makes it easier for me to place my plants. If you do not mind, could you please tell me where you got the plant stand you have in your bedroom east window?
Glad to know it works in your south window! Caladium are one of those plants that I feel like growers can’t make their mind up about the lighting on. For the same variety I’ve seen some tags say straight up shade, some part sun, and on the rare occasion I will see a tag that says full sun. 🤷♀️ But in my mind it makes sense that it could work in a southern window, so glad to know yours is thriving in that location ❤️
Thank you! I just found this video, and it helps me a lot! For some reason I am having a very difficult time determining what kind of light I have in all of windows. I knew that, for the most part, southern windows provide the most light. I also knew that eastern windows provide more gentle light, while western windows provide much harsher light. I guess what I'm having trouble with is determining direct light vs filtered light, and what exactly that means, as well as how to tell. Outside? No problem! Inside? I'm lost! On another note, you have a beautiful home! I would kill for your kitchen, and the windows in your bedroom!
Thank you! You can use your hand and the shadow it casts to determine how much direct light a plant is getting. The harsher and more defined the shadow is, the more direct the light the plant is receiving is.
Thank you so much for all of the help!!!! I have fallen in love with the asiatic jasmine and zebrina you have!!! I checked and it’s not in the storefront, will you be propagating them for sale?
@@BeachKid74-ct2ob I currently have two types of Tradescantia up on my website, but one is unfortunately currently sold out. The other one is still in stock: www.alohaplantlife.com/shop-plants/plants-by-type/tradescantia
My calathea medallion cracks me up the way she moves. I wake up and she's short and fat. Mid-late afternoon she is like shunning the window and facing the lamp, except her small bottom leaves will be doing an exorcist sideways thing. 🤣 My calathea ornata doesn't pray or move around. Anyone who spends a lot of time around their plants needs one that prays, they're so amusing! It's also interesting that if I tried to make it move it would snap 😬
It’s definitely very fascinating and a bit freaky at times. Last night I was pruning some spent leaves off my green maranta and my red maranta was moving so much it was rustling every few seconds and freaking me out 🙃
Well east and west are going to give you more light than north so I wouldn’t worry about not having any north windows. If you have plants that have super high light requirements that not even a west window will provide then unfortunately you would have to supplement with grow lights.

I got it from West Elm💚
My caladium hilo beauty is directly in the south facing window. Like all caladiums, it likes full sun and lots of water. Luv your videos!!

What if I only have west and east windows? I don’t have north or south, is there a way to make up for that besides supplementing with a grow light?
