I'm 40 years old, been doing Music for 22 years and more recently Video...and this is one of the most amazing insights into how I relate to creativity. If your young, still have the resource of your parents and not brought down with Mortgages and Bills etc (As I am)...then follow this advice...it explains a lot to me...really does. I know where i went wrong...will you?

It's amazing to see how far D's come...I was a regular at his apartment in Toronto back in the Phat Conductor era, and in those days you could toss him a few bucks for a weekend of one on one, hands-on instruction (+extra-curricular debauchery).
The system wasn't half as polished, but I learned more from watching him work than I could ever glean from a video tutorial. More importantly still, I got to know the man behind the curtain, his delightfully and wonderfully eccentric lady friend, and of course the venerable Tricky.
Anyway, if you're an aspiring producer who feels hopelessly stuck in the mud, your mental well-being demands that you stop procrastinating and mentally de-chore-ify(v) the writing process. Believe me when I say that the ill.Methodology is your best bet for unstickification(also v).

    • @Salman-Q

I am a comic book artist and this information is just as relevant in my field as it is in music production. It's kinda uncanny how many similarities there are...
I go back to this video at least every 4 months to get myself back on track, it works wonderfully.
Thank you Ill Gates, and thank you to music producer Garrett Miller for showing me this great piece of wisdom.

Holy shit! I was not expecting this! I've seen illGates talking about music before, so I already knew that he's intelligent, and good at verbalizing his thoughts, and obviously that he's a talented producer-- but I wasn't expecting this video to be as detailed and deep (and AWESOME) as it is. I've seen countless videos and articles about the general topic of this video, which is focused on the mental/preparatory side of making music (or creativity in general, actually), but this sticks out as CLEARLY the best. He ran down the entire list of things that I'm sure EVERY producer struggles with at some point, and he gave exact instructions on how to deal with those struggles, and backed the instructions up with real-life evidence, and proof that those solutions work. I'm extremely impressed. This should be mandatory viewing for any musician who hasn't seen it yet-- especially new musicians, who are still trying to find a path that actually works, and leads to where they're aspiring to be.

THANK YOU. I went from having nothing, to having a decent, much better than beginner, studio... and from making loud bad music which only served one purpose, to inspire me never to make anything that terrible again, to making what i consider pretty ill, intelligent bass music... You clarified and gave me direction in certain areas, things that were obvious, but that i needed to hear. The whole idea of Day / night sessions is brilliant. Words cannot express how inspired i feel right now, bless.

As a painter/visual artist his advice equally applies.
In an interview I read, Damon of Blur goes into the studio M-F 9AM-5PM; weekends off. He reiterates how much work one can accomplish. Obviously, most of us have PT/FT jobs but think about all the time we waste 'dicking around'.

That diary-thing i've heard several times before in different ways. I read a book about life and change and hindu monks wrote diarys for the same purpose, and if you read "a book of five rings" you'll understand that that is also kind of a diary and samurais did often write diarys.
