Titanic Revell 1/570 sinking model - Demo & Explained (Video #2) Titanic Submersible Model CUSTOM

  • This is Video #2 about my custom built Titanic Revell 1/570 sinking model. I show the model sinking during the day and at night. I will then go back to my workshop and explain how the model works. It is not a tutorial on how to build one but I do explain how I made mine. I do not endorse my methodology or recommend it, I just explain how I made mine - nothing more… I know this is not accurate to all the current theories and there are certainly better and more accurate examples of split in half sinking models of the Titanic on TH-cam, however my version of the model on this video is of my own design, I wanted it to split and not sink as a whole model so I did the best I could…. In making it, I truly did not want to copy how others did it. So I developed my own design. But my design does actually hamper how accurate the break occurs in the timing related to the plunge angle, but seriously, I had to do this in a limited amount of time and on limited budget with no experience in this type of model making in what little spare time I had… so this is not exactly how I wanted it, and I know people will not necessarily like the end result but I am pleased with the results because it split for me. That was all I really set out to do…. I just wanted the model to split like the submersible model toy and make my version of this model “resemble” the sinking as close as possible…. As this was my first attempt there are certainly things looking back that I would have liked to have done better or might have changed but at least the model resembles the effect I was trying to accomplish. Unfortunately, I did not visually document the process to show you the internal workings of the model. That’s why I only do an explanation and not a tutorial…
    Simple Disclaimer: This model is not a fully accurate representation of the Titanic, nor does it completely demonstrate exactly how the ship sank. This model and how it sinks is only meant to resemble how the Titanic may have appeared and reacted to her collision with the iceberg. There are many theories as to how she sank, history keeps evolving, and this video and the model presents only one of them in multiple attempts with random variable actions. So much of this video hinges on uncontrolled chance, there is only so much I could do with my limited experience… It is also very hard to make a model in this size perform in this manner, I did the best I could to come as close as possible to resemble at least in part how the Titanic sank. I was just happy I was able to get the model to resemble the break up! Again this is not an accurate depiction and is just intended to resemble how the ship may have sank. No disrespect is intended to the memory of Titanic, her victims or survivors and their families.

    • @ourdogzippy
      @ourdogzippy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes thats a good idea, if I ever open her back up (she is sealed really good at the moment) I may try that someday as the starboard list is more pronounced then I would have liked but that is the way these models go, they work great on the first plunge but when you do it over and over after the first sinking they retain water and have an awful list sometimes

    • @titanicandothershipstudies4202
      @titanicandothershipstudies4202 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So I ordered magnets are you sure this will work and do you put the magnets behind the bulk head you see on both split areas?

    • @ourdogzippy
      @ourdogzippy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - the magnets are behind the bulkheads. The farther apart they are the weaker the bond. Do not use too many… You will likely need to keep adding plastic to separate them as the magnet bond is very strong. It took me a few weeks of adjustments, trial and error, before the split action was ready. It’s a simple concept but it is actually hard to get it right. Mine works “ok” but it is not exactly the way I wanted it to be.

    • @MexIsraeliballedits
      @MexIsraeliballedits ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice so when you said to keep adding plastic to separate what do you meen by that is it those tiny plastic on the split like 2 tiny plastic walls on bow and a plastic tiny floor on stern?

    • @ourdogzippy
      @ourdogzippy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What I meant was when you use plastic to make those bulkheads at the split, in order to keep spacing the magnets further apart you may need to add more bulkhead plastic. You can find model plastic sheets at hobby lobby - that is what I used

    • @MexIsraeliballedits
      @MexIsraeliballedits ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ourdogzippy oh so like what you mean is when you getting to the end put more plastic and at the stern at the first bulkhead add more plastic so | | | | | | | | | | what those lines you see are the bulkheads

    • @ourdogzippy
      @ourdogzippy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No what I meant was you might need to add bulkhead plastic to the last bow bulkhead at the split… to make it thicker to space the magnets further apart from connecting to the magnets or metal in the stern section

      This is actually one of a kind, I made it from scratch. It a plastic Titanic model kit, that was cut in half. So you can easily find the plastic model kit, Michaels or hobby lobby will have one, but so far as making it float and splitting in half that is something that I did on my own, but the kit would be the first step. There is also a toy called the submersible model, this is a vintage out of print toy that is very expensive now, it is found on eBay (too expensive), so I would say start with a model kit and see how it goes.

    • @ourdogzippy
      @ourdogzippy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it has weights and magnets on both pieces…. I’ve tried more combinations and locations than I can type in this message lol It’s just difficult to perfect the timing on the break because every tweak I have done affects how the ship reacts somewhere else - long story short, the way I built it, of my own design, if I change it for accuracy in one spot, the performance and accuracy changes somewhere else in how it sinks. Right now is the most balance performance I can get where it resembles the break up but is not entirely accurate… So I am happy with it to a degree, in that it at least resembles the sinking and breaks in two (not easy to do lol) but I wish it was better. I wish she would have less of a starboard list and the stern rise up just a little more - say 25 degrees…. I think I could perfect this if I had used a larger kit, I am not skilled enough in 1/570 scale to make it perfect, but not terrible for a first go at it LOL

      Hello, thank you for the compliment, yes the model breaks a bit early but it was so hard to get it to stay together long enough to break at all - lol! I may try to revise it someday if I could find the time …. The scale of the model is 1/570 so if you get that one in Walmart you will be working with the same size and on the right track :-) if you are going to make it sink and split, good luck with it! Be sure to drop a note if you post a video :-)

    If you were to stick a gold coin on the port side of the stern. Not only your ship could recreate a list but the angle of the ship would sit lower in the water. Have you ever tried making a bigger model with a better breaking system?

    • @ourdogzippy
      @ourdogzippy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have tried coins the weight adjusts the bow nicely, but the ship breaks even faster, and the model will be damaged significantly if I open it up so I try methods only on the outside and try not to have it seen,which is hard, but the extra weight throws off the balance and she does not stay together, however, I have not tried an adjustment with the stern perhaps next summer when the pool reopens! As far as making another, this one was hard enough especially since I did not want to copy anyone else’s…. I wanted to keep mine as original as possible, I will probably try to tweak things in the summer - pool is frozen at the moment…. I like your stern idea I will likely try it :-)

    • @partyxplays
      @partyxplays 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ourdogzippy one method i do know that works for breakups is you have a bulkhead in the bow with a block of styrofoam connected to a bent paperclip in a shape of a hook, you can use the other end of the hook to connect the stern with. Once water reaches the foam it will rise in the compartment and it will lower the hook and disconnect the stern section. It seems complicated but i highly reccomend thefriendly vikings video on how he did it. Just search up titanic model sinks and splits and you should see a video of his model sinking in a pool. Just search his channel and theres a video on how he did it and he explains it better than me :)

    • @ourdogzippy
      @ourdogzippy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As much as I would like to make a video I did not document in photos how I built it, I do describe the process a little bit on one of my videos but I would not want to take it apart to do the video…. However, ask me any questions in the comments and I will try to answer them. In a nutshell…. The easiest model to do it with is the Revell 1/570, you can build the hull and easily remove the topside to get inside before it’s glued down…. First step is build the hull and seal it with gorilla glue. (Hobby glue is not strong enough and to brittle for the abuse the hull will take) Add the bow and stern deck. Then balance the hull first without adding the rest of the deck, you want some of the hull below the waterline - the weight of your ballast will do that… So balance the ship with a rock or something heavy. While the ship is floating carefully adjust and then glue the ballast in. Then remove the hull from the water and let it dry. Drill a hole near the bow (I did it on the very bottom).Cut ship in half including the top decks all at once Etc.. using a fine model hack saw blade. Use hobby plastic to seal each section of the hull then rebalance both pieces. You want them to float independently. Then you need to figure out how to keep the pieces attached and able to break apart. That’s the hard part. I used small magnets, the gravity of the bow filling with water breaks the ship in half. That’s the hard part and will take a bit to master. Then build the rest and detail. It’s a lot of trial and error. You can add watertight compartments with plastic if you want but they are not necessary. You will also need a hole in the stern section like the bow, but smaller to fill water slower then the bow. You will get a feel for things as you build it…. You will likely need to modify what I tell you based on how you build and what you want it to do. But this is the most basic way to tell you how I did it. This can be a very frustrating project, and after you build and test it - it may perform differently then it did once it’s all put together, just adjust and work on it some more, (I did not have the time to perfect mine) but stay positive and be patient and eventually you will figure it out. I hope this helps. Good luck with it and if you have questions just ask.

    Looks like the stern always ends up standing straight out of the water for just a few moments before going under. Man... It would be interesting if someone could also build a pool that is scaled to the depth that mimics the 2 Mike drop and see how the ship behaves as it descends... May we always put safety before vanity.... Thanks for sharing.

    • @ourdogzippy

      Sealed it off, balanced it, made it float, cut it in half very carefully, and allowed for a slow leak of water to get in both the bow and stern sections, magnets and gravity handle the splitting action.

      To make a model float upright you need to balance it. You need to find the center of the hull and glue something heavy like a rock inside it, or a piece of metal, Some people seem to like to use coins. Any of these methods will balance the ship to float upright, it just takes trial and error but This will balance it out.
