I would suggest you could easily get all the essential equipment as a beginner for less by knowing what is worth investing more in and what to avoid. A good mentor or club can often provide helpful guidance. A dive shop will have an incentive to sell to you though if you find a good one then hopefully they won't try to oversell you. To avoid possibly confusing listeners, try to distinguish between Oxygen and Air as breathing gases. Though it is common to mix the terminology up in day to day conversation, in diving the difference is very important. Most recreational divers use Air and occasionally enriched air. Pure oxygen is used in technical diving only and is very dangerous in the wrong setting. Have a great day
