Many a man during the war was happy to see them come on shore loaded with supplies.

Its amazing to think the difference a truck can make in a war.

Unfortunately, post war, unscrupulous people bought and modified them into amphibious tour buses, and made dangerous modifications to the vehicles.
Recklessly negligent owners ignored maintenence, servicing, upkeep and daily and pre-water entry checks to cut costs and to save time.
Neglect, misuse and disrepair lay beneath the brightly coloured exterior, and the use of secured plastic side screens physically prevented passengers from escaping swamped and sinking DUKW's.
Such was the absence of care, safety or professionalism that several DUKW's were taken into water whilst their bilge drain plugs were not fitted, or even on board the vessel, leading to rapid flooding and sinking.
A common theme found by accident investigators following accidents, incidents and sinkings, were appallingly bad levels of maintenance and repairs and dangerous modifications which rendered the vessels unsafe and misuse of the vessels.
As the numbers and frequency of accidents, incidents and sinkings rose, so did the casualty rate, with drownings and serious injuries making the headlines!
Had these vehicles been well maintained, had modifications which did not endanger safety and been operated professionally and safely, and with properly trained and experienced crews, there would in all likelihood have been no fatalities or sinkings...
