@iSevenSimmer It was opened and named as Dubai Parks and Resorts. But people hardly go there in summer because the heat is way too extreme. I have been there and i saw that even some of the restaurants even close down for 2/3 months because they do not have business.

louman-eightyfour I've been to Dubai in the winter when it was 65 to 70 degrees. Everybody bundled up their kids in winter coats! I had a light sweater on and everybody else had mittens and hats and coats. 120 degrees to them as like 90 to 95 degrees to us. At least it seemed that way.
"Also, it rains in the afternoon to cool things down." Great video Jake! It would have been interesting to mention that a lot of these projects did get resurrected as Riverland Dubai which is very similar to Dubailand but on a smaller scale. They now have Legoland, Dreamworks, Six Flags (opening next year), a Bollywood park and a Universal style area called Motiongate Dubai.
A new episode of cancelled always makes the week better! Seriously love your videos Jake, they’re so good. Keep them up, and I can’t wait to see what videos you have planned for next year.
I used to drive past the archway all the time. Always wondered why there was nothing else there apart from an outlet mall. Thanks for clearing that mystery up!
This was super interesting. I always love all of your theme park stuff, but your Universal episodes are particularly interesting since Disney has such a cult following that a lot of the information is readily available, whereas fewer people make content on Universal, especially content with this quality level. You guys are one of my absolute favorite channels, keep up the outstanding work!
I was in Dubai in 2014 and we were driving out to the desert and just in the middle of nowhere was a “Universal Studios” icon arch sign and NOTHING ELSE!! Wish I had taken a picture was so excited at the thought of coming back in a few years to go to it but I guess that’s not happening but I’ll never forget seeing that arch standing all alone.

Amazing video as usual! Since I'm from the UAE I was thrilled to see this video and clicked the notification immediately! Keep up the great work! (Ps: Legoland Dubai was eventually built and opened about a year or so ago and its now one of the parks at Dubai Parks and Resorts. There's a Legoland waterpark there too. I heard about universal studios Dubailand about 2 years ago and I did some research on it and now you've uploaded this video and I was like yesss something in the Middle East 😂😂

@@commander_pickle4273 As an Emirati, I'm so glad you've had a pleasant experience in the UAE! I bet next time you visit a lot of things will become almost unrecognizable.
I live in what remains of Dubai Land. It's sorta weird living around half-constructed abandoned buildings, almost feels like I'm living in a ghost town.
You should make a video on Hypermart USA, which was a series of large stores by Walmart before the typical Walmart-Supercenter came to fruition. I believe they only built four but the idea was cancelled around 1990 so it would make a good video idea for your series cancelled. The stores were gigantic, some up to 300,000 square feet I believe.
Eventually the Dubai bubble will burst for real, and it will be interesting to see all the "abandoned" episodes about all those massive empty skyscrapers....
As someone living in Dubai for very long time, I have seen the birth and death of Dubailand concept (and now its rebirth in a new form), this is a great video, thank you for shedding some light to it or confirming my thoughts. Great video.
This is outrageous! I want a Universal Studios Dubai and a Six Flags Dubai that should happen in the mid-to-late 2020’s! I can imagine both parks being indoors and away from the extreme heat of the Middle Eastern deserts!
YES! Was waiting for this so long as a Dubai resident :D Pretty sure Legoland was not cancelled though, and I've seen the arch myself many times, and its pretty cool because every time I went to Dubai Outlet mall, I saw the arch myself and wondered what it was for, meanwhile I always read about Dubailand and never knew where the whole thing was. lol
I think it's great to know why projects fail and how to avoid similar issues in the future, so I'm happy this video was made 👍 I guess I thought I would be used to it at this point, but the sheer ignorance in some of these comments is just sickening to be honest 😪

Great video as always. I worked out in the UAE for a few years and worked with a number of people who worked on the Dubailand project which did result in Global Village and the Outlet Mall being built but it was well known by the team working on it that funding was really in place for any of it and most admit they didn't expect it to be built. The offices were demolished because a number of Asian labourers were living there because they had become stranded, when companies go bust very low paid staff have no way to get home and visas are canceled so they become stuck and are technically homeless. The site at one point had some parts of coasters and shipping containers of items for the park delivered but they seem to have disappeared. I was told these were never paid for like many things as it often the way there even from govenment held companies who are the worst for ripping off people and companies. The Six Flags project and Lego both came back to life under another company as they had done a lot of design work for Dubailand which they weren't paid for I guess they hoped to recoup the costs. The problem with any themepark in the UAE is it will never be a commercial success as out of around 3m residents 900k are locals, 1m are Indians/Pakistani/Bangladeshi, 400k filpinos and the rest a mix of westerners and other Asians. Many just can't afford to attention the parks in the volumes needed as the Ferrari World has found out and has needed constant injection of cash to keep it running and to stop it looking like a white elephant.
ThatAussieGirl yeah but like we don't have themed blockbuster parks with resorts and such. Also, all of the theme parks (minus sea world) in Queensland are in Coomera, right off the highway, which means it takes ages to get there.
Soul of Cinder that's my favorite thing about this channel! I'm really into cancelled and abandoned theme parks and stores but I'm a major wimp so I can't stand feeling creepy vibes from a video.
Fantastic job. I use to work for Six Flags, and heard all about Dubai. Then it just stopped. They even had plans to build a Wild Safari in Dubai under the Six Flags park similar in nature to the one in New Jersey. They even started growing their animal populations to transfer them over when the park was complete. Then, similar to what you showed for Universal they just stopped talking about Dubai.
I remember being so excited about how universal studios dubailand was going to be built back then. That I was searching information about it everywhere (Those photos from the themeparkguy were very familiar haha) Sad to see such an amazing plan fall through. But once again, amazing work from you :) been here since the beginning and finally something I can relate to a little haha :)
A lot of stuff happened last year With introductions of Img Legoland Motiongate (Hollywood stuff) Bollywood park In Dubai Also wb in abudhabi The project of utilising land of that area restarted in 2016 and it’s called as expo 2020
Hello Jake, Long time watcher - love your vids. I am a full time hospitality student studying in Florida, and while reading one of my textbooks I came across the now defunct Wannado City, which was an interactive theme park dedicated to kids in Ft. Lauderdale. I'd love to see a video documenting this place as it is SUPER interesting to me. Thanks!
I went to Dubai then we went to a outlet mall then when I saw the map I saw it said universal studios I was surprised there was one in Dubai but turns out it wasn’t even done or even made
Legoland Dubai has been open just over a year, and some of the ideas for Universal Studios Dubailand appear to have been recycled into the MotionGate park which was also opened at the end of last year
Really love your videos, man. You research and present such rich, interesting information in a really elegant way. It works well and i can't wait to see more as we roll through 2018
ngl i've been living in this city my whole life and i still don't know wtf dubai land is lmao. i just know that dubai parks exists and it's an awesome place but istg THE HEAT!!! like i'm used to it but god damn i dont want to walk in an amusement park while Sweating my ass off. glad that i went to legoland in the winter and that motiongate is mostly indoors. IMG world however ... gosh, i haven't been there but ive heard that it's the best and largest indoor amusement park around here so far. so yeah , to anyone complaining in the comments about universal being built in the desert, just remember that construction companies Know about the weather and most parks around here would be at least half indoors.
This video was amazing! I think you should do a cancelled video on the entire Dubailand! It was extremely ambitious and would have raised the bar for what a project could be!
Small correction: Legoland went ahead, just not in the same location. Legoland and Legoland Waterpark are open in the Jebel Ali Area next to 2 other parks. Dubailand ultimately only got one park, called IMG world of adventure. It's alright, but barely anyone goes now.
Well on a slightly lighter note I'm willing to bet when the project was cancelled, they all said "Gubai", am I right?

Always love waking up to Bright Sun films content in my sub list!
Do one on the once retail giant Filene’s. @BrightSunFilms
All of that shit would've been right outside my house! I live next to that junk!
Ishan Sheriff I’ve always seen the universal studios arch and wondered what ever happened to it lmao
I just have to say that your channel is my favorite. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much!
This is posted on my birthday, yay!!

HHHHAPPPY HHHHAPPPY BBBIRTHHHHDAYYY
I remember being so excited about how universal studios dubailand was going to be built back then. That I was searching information about it everywhere (Those photos from the themeparkguy were very familiar haha) Sad to see such an amazing plan fall through.
But once again, amazing work from you :) been here since the beginning and finally something I can relate to a little haha :)
dude last year I went to Legoland dubai
I have watched all of your Cancelled and Abandoned Video's. you do an amazing job. Thanks for the entertainment!.
Most of the companies who wanted a spot in Dubailand actually got what they wanted eventually because of Dubai Parks and Resorts.
From what I’m hearing, thier not making much money
The final image of the arch in the desert made me think of the ruined statue in "Ozymandias." Superb content as always, Jake.
Theres been a universal studio advertisrment outside my house for the last 10 years
A lot of stuff happened last year
With introductions of Img
Legoland
Motiongate (Hollywood stuff)
Bollywood park
In Dubai
Also wb in abudhabi
The project of utilising land of that area restarted in 2016 and it’s called as expo 2020
TOO BAD THE RECESSION IS FCKING US OVER
If the economy doesn't start improving soon I'm outa this dessert and going to Malaysia
Who counts Bollywood park?
That 1 dislike must've been accidental. Nice video, dude.
Thanks!
I went to Dubai then we went to a outlet mall then when I saw the map I saw it said universal studios I was surprised there was one in Dubai but turns out it wasn’t even done or even made
Wow! I had no idea that was even being planned. Great episode, Jake!
It’s named “Dubai land” but everything in the park is American themed 😂
Legoland Dubai has been open just over a year, and some of the ideas for Universal Studios Dubailand appear to have been recycled into the MotionGate park which was also opened at the end of last year
I'm early! Lemme think of a joke
Six Flags owning Geauga Lake
Mewleon Kun bahahahahhahaahabhaahahhahahah
you call that a joke?? pfeh, i'll tell you a dirty joke....
a beautiful white horse fell into a mud hole, the end......
Mewleon Kun “I am Universal Studios, look upon my works ye mighty and dispair!”
So professional! The reason why I watch your channel is because of how detailed and informational these videos are. Keep it up! :D
Thank you so much!
Bright Sun Films You're welcome! :)
i love when its every other Friday!!!
"Dubailand" seems like it should be the name of a Dubai-themed park that is somewhere _other than_ Dubai. They clearly didn't think that through.
I bet you that Bright Sun Films won’t ❤️ this
Jokes on you
Bright Sun Films Damn! You beat me to it. 😂
Bright Sun Films now pin this
Renaldo The Geogrophy Now you're just pushing it!
Renaldo The Geogrophy clever
Please make an abandoned about the story of the Costa Concordia cruise ship
Forrest Hassell you're funny
Forrest Hassell consider that done! He has done it!
Small correction: Legoland went ahead, just not in the same location. Legoland and Legoland Waterpark are open in the Jebel Ali Area next to 2 other parks.
Dubailand ultimately only got one park, called IMG world of adventure. It's alright, but barely anyone goes now.
