This is such a sad song, about escaping bad times, the last lines kill the sweetness of the rest of the song, "if happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, why, oh why can't I". It is played at funerals meaning loved ones have gone over the rainbow, but we can't yet. This version is hauntingly beautiful and yet so sad.

My hubs and walked down the aisle to Eric Clapton's version. It is fantastic.
The lyrics were written by Yip Harburg, the son of a Russian-Jewish immigrant. His real name was Isidore Hochberg, and he grew up in a Yiddish-speaking Orthodox Jewish home in New York. The Music was written by Harold Arlen. A Jew who's family immigrated from Lithuania. The song is written about hope, that the bad times will one day be over. It is the feeling of hope within the song that we can all relate to and it is hope that helped the Jewish people through the Holocaust. Yip did not know what the future held for the Jewish people when he wrote the song. The song is about hope, that one day the bad times will be over. Isreal is a testament to the Jewish people that the "dreams that you dare to dream really do come true."
I guess it would be a good song to dance to. You found the man of your dreams and you dare to dream that your dreams have really come true. You are entering into a bright new future as man and wife!

Judy's voice was natural and not edited by pitch correction like this version was. And, that's not to say that Kelly doesn't have a great natural voice because she does. We are just not allowed to hear it.

This song has obviously been covered and re-imagined to eternity in the last near-century (!) and I love how this arrangement went back to the original "feel" but still put a little spin on it to make it fresh. Just absolutely breathtaking. Watch how closely Jaco pays attention to Kelly so she can go where she wants. He's simply amazing, and Kelly's vocals are once again a Master Class in placement, delivery, and tone.
Unfortunately, Kelly's voice has been pitch corrected and so we are not allowed to hear her natural voice go where she wants it to go. In fact, the use of pitch correction here makes her "voice" irrelevant to the tuned guitar. This is "Over the Rainbow" in its purest form. No lyric changes, not many musical changes, like the extra belts or runs that are in other covers. Just someone with an astounding voice singing an iconic song. Thank-you Kelly and your band for making me feel the warmth of nostalgia from when I, like many others, heard this song when we were kids, wathing "The Wizard of OZ".

I loved it, but too much of her sliding into notes instead of landing on the note cleanly. It is a stylistic approach, I know she is classically trained and just doing it her way. But I can’t stand the sliding into notes that should be just sung from the outset-on a standard such as this one. 8.5/10 for me

There's only one Judy, but HOLY fercuckle there's only one Kelly Clarkson! Over the years wont't deny, as an old queen here I've heard many versions but man oh man, this will become the song moment for so many new members of my community, like how Judy just sits in my brain when all we really had when I came out was her, kudos Kelly, your tone, the rainbow shining bright, those guitar strings, how they were plucked, FABULOUS!

Eva Cassidy would be proud. She knew more than most "less is more". The stripped down restrained version of this song with just a guitar is usually the best. The lovely low notes can sometimes be more than just going for the sky. We all know you can belt Kelly what was revelatory in this is you have beautiful low notes too.

Oh, Eva’s version is like nothing on this planet. Kelly borrowed a few licks from Eva but she also added her own lovely interpretation. Love them both but they feel like different songs to me.

My old school favorite, I played this song on my daughter's 1st. month of her passing from breast cancer 8 years ago this week. In her 1st year of her passing, I was crying controlling, When I heard a song on TV " In My World" Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, I felt that my daughter decided that song for me. I hope you can sing that song one day. Both songs help me with my grieving as I'm sure it helped others.

The only bad thing about this is that it left me wanting more and hoping that Kelly will come out with a full album of jazz standards/old classics. The way she can keep that classic sound and feel while bringing in modern touches is sheer artistic brilliance.
