I still watch and smoke a bowl w John every Friday night. I cant help it. There’s a welcome comfortable routine there that I still look forward to. He’s given me, all of us, some wonderful memories insights perspectives and routines I didn’t have before, and I’m not about to give up on any of it. Brothers in Smoke. Peace ✌️
I know you've passed, ive only just discovered your channel. You're not dead to me, you are live and well, as i watch you talk. You are to have many more conversations with me. I hope your family feels the same as they go back and watch your videos.
Lovely video! There was a time, you could measure a man by how many keys he had on his chain. Matches was a great man....sure will miss him. He lives on in these videos he left us. 🙂
So bummed we lost this awesome guy. Thanks to his family for leaving the vids up. I commented on one of his vids, about how we both loved the band “Yes” ( the old stuff from the 70s). We had a nice conversation over TH-cam comments section that I’ll always remember. Love you John, thanks for being so cool and nice and sorry we never met in person. See you on the other side old chap.
Hello John! Wow...that was really an interesting insight! Thanks a lot for sharing that! Always so good, to see you! Hope, you are well! And take care, John! Mark
I too only discovered him after he was gone, but I have all his videos to watch and happy his family left the channel in tact - what a great gift. His calm and peaceful demeanor is soothing in a world that moves way too quickly and abruptly. 🙏
TH-cam keeps recommending your videos for me to watch again. I do miss you, and am glad that I can still watch your videos and hear your voice :) RIP John
You're awesome. I'm glad I'm not the only nerd that carries around a plethora of stuff. Might do a video myself about it. Really liking the multi-tool idea. Thank again!
It was pretty awkward the first time I carried that bag into work. I bought a back pack, which is what most folks use around here...but, the bag is more functional for me.
Partner we are twin sons of different mothers 😆 I pretty much carried the same items on my belt for 30 years 20 which was the Navy. I switched from a knife to a razor cutter when I went in work with a service company called Ecolab. You could always hear me coming near by front tire amount of keys I was using. Our hair cut is nearly exact too. I used to keep a “taster “ clay pipe in my service vehicle and a pinch of bacy for the days I Ran out of the house too fast and forgot my regular pipe kit. My glasses are pretty much the same as yours style in shape as well ha ha cheers brother
Very enjoyable video John. That Old Timer is a classic. I am a pocket knife guy myself, have one in my pocket at all times. Hope you have a great week. Regards Mark
I remember going to work with just my set of keys and a wallet. I guess when you get older you smarten up, or you become a packrat and carry half your belongings with you LOL.
Good stuff. I have also thought about doing a EDC video after watching Erik's SIU "Stiff I Use" piece a few weeks ago. It's fun to see just how much people lug around with them every day. Thanks for another awesome video.
Have a great weekend John and thanks so much for the video exactly what I was talking about. I have always been really interested in what people carry around with them on a daily basis and from different walks. Anyway, this video has made me make the decision to break out of lurker status and into YTPC. I'll be making my first video soon and will most likely do an intro and also talk about my EDC witch is quite extensive ! Thanks Again ! BE WELL
John, That's a Great idea for video. We all carried Leathermen at the firehouse . You just never realize how much you need one until you find yourself always going for it. Thanks for Sharing my friend. It's always good to see you.. The Pipe is coloring up Nicely.. Take care and Keep it Lit...
So true! It took me a while at first to remember I had the multi-tool on me, but as you say, once you get using it, you're forever grabbing it for one chore or another.
Hi John, I would highly recommend that you get a small pocket flashlight. Can't tell you how handy they are. Can get you out of a lot for trouble. Have a great weekend!!
Love Apple products. Love my Leatherman too. I've had my Leatherman since 96. Got it when I was in the Army. Now you've got me researching Cannon Sure Shots. Lol
Does the bowl of that Brylon get soft and "squishy" when lit? I used to work for US Cellular, and we had best reception with Moto Z, and fewest damage claims from OtterBox.
No, Brylon can get pretty hot though so you have to go easier with it. Once you get some cake in it, it's just like briar. The Moto Z force has "unbreakable" display and you can bend the phone without a hassle, but I'm used to an Otter case and they're relatively cheap insurance.
Yes, I really have had great luck with the Savinelli's. I believe I have a dozen at least and only one of them gives me a rough time, but I bought it as a second so not a big deal.
Talk about traveling light, I felt weighted down looking at those keys. Now all you need is an Inspector Gadget trench coat to keep everything in one place at all times.
@@Matches860 I constantly have to pull my pants up with just my Kershaw in my pocket, I couldn't imagine what a key ring would do for the plumber peep show. I cannot even stand a wallet in my pocket, let alone some change. However, I am out of uniform without a knife big or small, and I just added a z pipe butane lighter since I am now officially tired of fiddling around with matches. If only they would make one of those fanny backs that did not look so bad.
MATCHESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS 860!! JOHN GREAT TO SEE YOU TODAY MY FRIEND... I'm with you on the bag of every day.. I'm on the same page with you with the iPad I absolutely love my iPad I've had it now for 70 years which one of the best things I ever got I absolutely couldn't live without it and I tried doing the iPhone and I wound up going back to the Droid the only phone I've ever had smartphone I should say is the Droid the Motorola Droid battery seems to last me for an entire day and night and I use it quite a bit if the battery was equal in the iPhone I would have one so I understand completely have a great day and a great weekend I'm heading out for a hike right now
Brad, look at the iPad Pro 10.5 which is fairly new. Around October, ios 11 is gonna make that a real awesome machine...you can watch vids of it now. I'm looking at trading in my mini for one at Christmas time.
Yeah, and I believe there's someone else holding Apple hostage with the processor as well or some other part. Maybe it is the display, I don't know LOL
Funny, I was evaluating the necessity of carrying all the stuff I have in my briefcase the other day. When I leave my current job in February, I believe I will be retiring the briefcase as well.

Matches860 thats deffiantly a terrible feeling. my main problem nowadays is sitting down on a bench or something with slots or holes and my checzh tool getting stuck when i stand up and ripping my belt loops. has happened twice now and have only had one on my ring for about a year.
You just had to show that Old Timer. Now I'll spend the rest of the day hunting for mine. The Surge is my go to Leatherman. Overkill? Is have more than a couple of pipes overkill? No way. I'm more interested in what you carry that you didn't show. Nudge, nudge, wink , wink. Have a good day, John.
John, if you're going to carry your passwords in a bag, make sure to put them on an encrypted USB key. My old man wants to add that in a few years, it would be a good idea to add a clean underwear to the bag!
Howdy John,I'm such an old school I ain't have no apple nor I phones, instead I got the Motorola Razr flip phone which were hot back in 90'ie it has surpricingly good battery capacity, but one downside to all these NewOld stock cell phones is the fact that they are getting a little bit too pricey compared with conteporary onees, additionally I'm not leaving without my leather roll up tobacco-pouch and my pipe in pipe sleeve,+tiny pocket knife+tamper, matches and lighter whether bic or zippo,+ wallet and comb to keep hairs in order, thats all, and I feel pretty much ok, summer period can be a challenge when you dont have too much pockets to stuff all these accessories in, Have a great weekend, and greets, Paul
I'm a real tech geek, so all this stuff is fascinating to me. The problem is getting all the equipment which will work with each other. Thankfully, a lot of Android,Windows, and Mac apps are reproduced for each item.
I've been looking at iPads and other tablets myself. I keep coming back to one question.. What can the tablet do that my phone cannot do? What exactly do you use your iPad for during the course of a normal day? I have a laptop at home and a android phone already.
There's a good question. For me, my phone is 95% dedicated to stuff at my job and is, in fact, paid for by my employer. My iPad is for personal use and I've found the Apple apps to be a lot easier to work with than anything in Windows, although I do use OneNote all the time as a crossover app.Besides the operating system, the display on the iPad makes the work a real pleasure. I've used the spreadsheet app for contests, calendar for personal stuff, and the camera which really does nice pics.
Think of the tablet as a huge phone. Of course, there are many apps that will only work with an iPad (and not on an iPhone or iPod) but basically, it's just way easier (and pleasant) to use because of the larger screen.
I'm wondering if I spend the money on a tablet would I actually use it at home or just end up reaching for the old laptop? but it still sounds like a convenient toy as Mr Matches put it. Maybe I'll hold off until the holiday sales start up.
Hi John , That's sure a lot of stuff I hope the job pays well. I like the Canon point and shoot whats the model on that ? I'm trying to hook up a ride with a friend to pay you a visit sometime this fall , l will let you know. Happy puffing buddy.
This is the SX610, but there are a bunch of similar models with varying features. I originally got one for "point & shoot", but you can be pretty creative just the same. I do have a bunch of time off this fall...keep me in the loop!
You are the first tuber I have seen with a brylon pipe. I bought a brand new kaywoodie spartan brylon pipe I think it was and then wondered why no one else bid on it. Hahhhaha. I looked up brylon. Wood pulp and resin...what's your take on the brylon pipe? I havent smoked mine yet but it is a very nice unsmoked straight bulldog. Take care John!
The first five or so bowls may make you throw it in the garbage can...it tastes like you're smoking Tupperware LOL. While I use mine for emergencies, it has built up some cake and really does smoke just like a briar...well, the bowl does get pretty hot, but I can work with it.
Damn that's a lot of stuff, I jingle when I walk but it's not my keys :p Never bored of your videos buddy. What does the haunted bookshop taste like? Might need to try it one day,
No, Jack, No! Haunted Bookshop packs a wallop in the nicotine department. At any rate, being burley based, it sort of a nutty, earthy, figgy kind of taste.
Time to get that iPhone. With a few tweaks you can really limit the power the iPhone uses. With a past update there is now a Low Power Mode too. I love having my iPhone and iPad acting as almost the same device. Thx again for the videos. 👍
I believe, that after everything's said and done, Apple will end up being THE operating system for general use. I'm no expert geek, but it seems to me that simplicity and functionality will win the race.
Oh Jack, you've uncovered my carry weakness! I keep a hanky in my coat pocket from October through May when "drippage" is more frequent. I've yet to master carrying one year round.
Along with everything else, I've been looking into the iPad pro which (I'm fairly sure) will do everything I need from a computer. The iPad mini has already proven a worthy stand in.
apple anything is overpriced...I was going to buy a dell alienware computer wanted top of the line but they wanted crazy money and no specs. I built my own pc for $900 has everything I wanted and more, and it's ran strong the past 6 years. Like Matches860 said...it's all about battery life if you're going mobile.
Well, Verizon confirmed that because I work in a "multi-family" type setting, the phone spends all its energy trying to connect to whichever Wi-Fi I happen to be close to at work. My days off I use far less power.
I have the same Old Timer. ! Do you like firearms too always wondered that ? Conn. gun laws are strict though . Im going to guess if you do like firearms your into old west style single action pistols, lever action rifles and such...... ??
I keep watching all these old videos and missing you a lot. RIP buddy.

It would be bad ass if all of a sudden he was like. Wallet.....keys...
Snub nose .357.....pipe as if it was nothing.

OMG, and I have a long history as an Ecolab customer...how weird.
Going through the videos again. John had a way to make you feel he was talking straight to you. RIP my pipe smoking brother.
Great vid Matches. I liked it so much. Thanks. Have a great week-end too.
Thanks for joining me as always CD!
Very enjoyable video John. That Old Timer is a classic. I am a pocket knife guy myself, have one in my pocket at all times.
Hope you have a great week.

I have another (similar) with bolsters on both ends. Knives are very handy for sure! Hope all is well!
Love your style
The New Friday Savinelli! I love it!!! Good video, as always, John.
She's coming along nicely Eddie! I do smoke a bowl or too out of it during the week also...just to move things along!
Beautiful scenery. Nice pipe. Man wish I was out there.
I gotta do another video from over there soon!
You carry lots of stuffs! Remain me of the cartoon in the 70s and 80s - the captain caveman! :)
I could probably still trim down what I carry, but it all fits in the bag so who cares LOL. Thanks for watching Buddy!

Although my phone has the flashlight, I have a mini-mag in the bag...extremely valuable piece of equipment for sure.
Jimmy Philyaw Yup, there are some great, slim flashlights with high lumen numbers, very bright. So practical.
Love Apple products. Love my Leatherman too. I've had my Leatherman since 96. Got it when I was in the Army. Now you've got me researching Cannon Sure Shots. Lol
The Canon PowerShots are so much fun...probably never buying a DSLR again.
Such a big help. I tend to carry way to much stuff!
I did/still do too. What I try to do is ck every few months to determine what I've used and what I can toss. I've cut back on a lot of junk.
Video topic proposition: Why exactly do you smoke a pipe matches 860?
Sounds like a good idea. I suppose I have left the clues here and there in other videos, but never put it into a condensed version.
That would make for cool video. You should challenge others to make a vid on the subject also.
I discovered this channel recently and pipe smoking in general. Matches and many others live on through TH-cam!
Even though I am building up my tool box, I always head for the Swiss army knife first.....they are an absolute godsemd
I agree! I love my Swiss Army knives!

Hey matches great video i have about 3 savenilli pipes there great pipes i been meaning to get savenilli 673 its good looking pipe
Yes, I really have had great luck with the Savinelli's. I believe I have a dozen at least and only one of them gives me a rough time, but I bought it as a second so not a big deal.
Many thanks, John...

That would be Haunted Bookshop from Cornell & Diehl, I never leave home without it.
I carry all kinds of stuff in the woods cutting timber. Call it my Batman belt lol.
That was a good video John! It tells me a lot about the person. Do you carry your Walther PPK in your bag John Bond 673KS

An Old Timer is a very strong and sturdy knife. Like a Buck knife.
Hawk tawk carries as little as she can get away with! I am even willing to leave my phone at home!
Funny, I was evaluating the necessity of carrying all the stuff I have in my briefcase the other day. When I leave my current job in February, I believe I will be retiring the briefcase as well.
Where do you keep your gun Matches?
No guns here...the thing might go off!
yeah was it a good smoke?
Greetings from Holland,, Kitty.
Sure was!
awesome and relaxing video as always john. i carry my keys the same way and not jingling makes me worry lol

you do carry a little bit stuff lol but awesome seeing you
Thanks for coming by Norm...always nice to have you!
Do you shave every day?
John, if you're going to carry your passwords in a bag, make sure to put them on an encrypted USB key. My old man wants to add that in a few years, it would be a good idea to add a clean underwear to the bag!

Surprisingly simple operation...I guess that's why I thought Windows was better, I mean, isn't computing suppose to be difficult? LOL
I'm rubbish at new technology, I think my knowledge stopped at VHS recorders haha.
Interesting inventory there John. But, no handkerchief? I mean, the nose and the eyeglasses... heh heh

Nice "out" John. ha! I really enjoy your videos, many of which I can relate to. Take it easy today.
I'm serious Jack! I just can't seem to get a handle on the hanky carry...I do have a drawer full of them which get rotated often in cooler weather.
For me it's "Never leave home without it." That and Chap-stick. I'm at a loss without these two items. ha!
LOL, Chapstick got dropped from EDC a few years ago. I had about five tubes received at Christmas's that just sat there rolling around.
