I have an MK67 with a NOS Telefunken tube. I've used it with my Neve 1073 and it sounds good (solid state) but it sounds stellar with a Telefunken V72 mic pre. It really seems like a match made in heaven. I have a clone unit that I built using a board from Drip Electronics, with NOS tubes. It sounds more detailed and alive.
@@larryayres4592 Interesting! Yes I probably wouldn’t pair my MK67 with our Neve and think it really benefits from the clarity of our API or punch of our DAV, would love to read more about the V72 clone you’ve made! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Between a few friends & I we have 3 Max Mods, all of us use them in vintage mode (99% of the time) Otherwise would go with a 47 ! The MK works so so well with good SState Pre’s!
@@jfrancis2649 thanks for the comment. I don’t find I need to EQ it as a standard approach. Although I do find it works best if it can breath a little (e.g using it on guitar or sax), rather than as an up close vocal mic. Surprised it sounds like an SM7B, I found those thinner sounding when I used them, and the MK thicker and warmer sounding, but of course the instrument it’s being used on, the room, and the pre will all have an effect. What’s your set up and what are you using the MK on? Also what did you use as your donor for the mod, an 87ai or TLM67? Cheers!
I’m not a huge fan of the format of your shootout, but I appreciate it nonetheless the less. I’d prefer to hear them in full passages and in solo as well as within a mix. I think it’s pretty evident that the MK67 rolls off the top more than the U67RI. That’s why the REDD with the air mode helped it. The MK67 in RI mode gets closer, but it’s still a little bit darker. The TLM67 is a sleeper. I don’t understand the hate it gets sometimes. It really is a nice sounding mic, but has less low end than either the MK67 or the U67RI.
Thanks for your detailed comments I think you make some really good points. Yes this was a huge minefield of a test because of the many variables, we do normally solo the mics and we are working on some shootout edits now that do that, but with this one we had to make some choices to get it done and out there! Agree with you about the mics too, and this particular test really showed how important the preamp can be. One other thing is this was a vocal shootout which means proximity has a big impact, I’ve noticed since doing this and using the MK on sax and guitar that it tames the low end response. Thanks and best of luck with your own audio!
nice! I just got my Max Mod. I put it inside my U87ai.. gonna run it through my BAE1073=>CL1B and see how it sounds. the vintage U67 is hard to beat… we’ll see 🤞
@@Lukas-wx9gxit’s sounds good. It’s a little darker than a vintage U67.. so i’m swapping out the transformer for a Neumann BV12. I’m gonna make a before and after video
@@jfrancis2649 Did you swap the transformer? Did it improve the sound? I find tubes vary a lot. I put a NOS Mullard in mine and it sounded very dark. Switched to a NOS Telefunken and it brightened it back up and added clarity.
Thx! Just picked up one of his "limited edition" stock with the Telefunken tube and new PSU. Excited to hear it:)
That sounds great! Can you share a link? Interested to see how the PSU differs?
you got it? what do you think about it?

do you usually EQ your max mod? for some reason mine sounds like an SM7B…

u67 reissued sounded the best
Ah, but worth the extra £1,000s? Also I would say the pre amp made more of a difference on this one.. Thanks for commenting!

Enjoy! Best thing is you can swap between the two for different sounds, but I think you’ll keep the MK in most!
