I didn't have time to wait for a new spring as I was on a job. I took a pair of pliers and bent the spring so it would work like it originally did and put it back together and it works fine now.

There are several videos that cover this topic, but yours is the only one that I found that gives details and actually shows how to make the repair. Others don’t show how to reinstall the ball bearing or how to orient the chuck to make sure it goes on right.
    Thanks.

This one was everything I needed. I decided to just use mini flatheads to get the hog ring on. One thing I would add is to clamp down your driver to your work bench. Then the hand that's doing the holding of the flat washer and spring has to do so much less. Dude you made a great video that helped me out perf. Thank you!

    • @SimonHomeintheEarth

  • @waichan3954

Awesome! Thanks so much. I was confused about the orientation of the inner spring and the placement of the ball bearing. Not no more!!! The tip on the use if a retaining ring tool helped a ton as well. So, I'll add that an extra hand helped a ton pushing down the washer with a thin flathead screwdriver while the retaining ring is installed.

It's pretty clear that the retaining spring is flawed either in design or material, and DeWalt should be replacing them as a recall, but they are stiffarming customers at support. Pretty sad for a company that is supposed to be making quality tools. Thanks again for the video, too bad so many will need it... I bought 4 impact tools this year and 3 have already have defecting chuck springs...

@@kirk422 well if yours lasted 5 years, kind of explains what happened, obviously the generation of tools i bought got some bad steel or they changed suppliers. 3 out of 4 tools failing in the first 6 months is no outlier. When I called DeWALT, all my tools were less than 6 months old.

This spring is known to fail time and time again. I met a fellow that had the factory replace his and it failed again after 6 weeks. Mine has failed but I fixed it my way and will see if it lasts. I shrunk and cut a spring out of a ball point pen and stuck it behind the locking ball to help push it forward in the locking position. I will get to see how long this lasts.

The reason is very Simple and very sad that DeWalt has made that poor chuck design. I,m building high ropes parks and mostly i connect steel cables 10mm and 12mm using wire ropę clips. I decided to get dcf840 with power stack, because of the lightweight, control and power. This chuck is wobble master and Hex to 1/2 adapter destroyer because is too shallow and the distribution of torque force is given mostly to the end tip of Hex. Only 2 mm in DeWalt when the quick relase chuck is pushing the bit ,the deepest insert gets 5 mm on the bit or adapter.
I have made investigation on my other stuff. Milwaukee Chuck gets 5 mm and 9 mm when fully inserted, Makita is even more. That's mean the bits are more stable and more adapters in your pocket
You can show this maybe on film.
Thank you and have a unwobble day.

Thanks for the video. At about 2:16 in, you mention that you can't put the chuck on backwards.
I found out the hard way that you actually can, and the bit will not release once in. The front of the chuck (facing out from drill) has the deeper recess where the spring sits below the washer.

Thanks for the video, but I had the opposite experience. My DeWalt impact wouldn't let bits OUT of the chuck. I replaced the anvil (probably wasn't necessary) and most of the front end assembly. You say it's pretty clear which direction the chuck goes on... well I'll be that idiot! I WAS putting the chuck on backward, which was causing my bit sticking issue with the new parts... but I still don't know why my bits were getting stuck on the chuck as-assembled by DeWalt.

Yea, I put in thousands of screws, hundreds of tapcons, so it gets used hard. When the first one died, I thought it was probably because of my sandy environment, but when the second one died... It is just such a flimsy little spring and not up to the torque and impact that it needs to handle. All the repair shops are well aware of this problem and order ball springs in bulk.

    • @SimonHomeintheEarth

No certainly not a larger ball. If you think the spring is too weak, you could stretch it out a little. But more likely you have the spring on the wrong side of the ball?

I have three drivers, but I am building a house and work them all hard in a sandy environment. I often use self tapping screws (into steel) or tapcons into concrete. This video was the first time I had to fix one of my drivers. I made the video because I couldn't find a decent one that show what I needed to do. But since this video, I have had to replace the same spring in both other drivers and this driver needed a new hog ring (it just wore out and couldn't hold the assembly together anymore).
