I'm binging your videos with the hopes of moving to Scotland in the next year or so. My prepping starts now so hopefully by next fall...fingers crossed.
as far as the TV Licence goes, many other countries in Europe and other parts of the world do have a TV Licence of some description (eg Germany, Ireland, Austria, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, Finland). Some countries have abolished the separate payment system and put cost of public television and radio into general taxation (eg France, Spain, Belgium, Malaysia, New Zealand, Canada, Australia) or a fee is added to a household electricity bill (eg Greece, Portugal, Italy).
Worth noting on the TV license the law also says you must have one to watch BBC iPlayer as well, so don't get caught out by that! You don't need one for on-demand services like Netflix or Amazon unless the programs are actually live.
Let the letters keep coming, TV license "enforcement officers" are just door to door salesmen, you do not have to talk to them. Say no thanks and close your door.
Hello Peter, what made you move to scotland ? TV license usually if you buy a TV they usually ask for an address which they pass onto the TV license dept . If you don't give an address, then you don't go into their black book . Hope that helps .
Of all the things that you mentioned the one that stands out is the TV Licence. I have visited an awful lot of the world, either for business or as a tourist. Without being a mega patriot I reckon that I can confidently say that here in the UK we have the best (or last bad! 😉) TV in the world. Why? Because the of the BBC which the Licence Fee (it is NOT a "tax") pays for. The standard of its output is very, very good and the best part is NO BL@@DY ADVERTS!!! None. Not a single one. Just great TV. The comment regarding the Driving Licence was interesting. My Niece worked in the USA a few years ago and took her test there. She then returned to the UK and took her test here. She told me that the ease of passing the US test was frightening and was probably the reason why there was such a poor standard of driving there and why there was such a high per capita rate of road deaths and injuries compared to the UK.
I agree with you on both points! The US driving licence system is abysmal at best. While it is inconvenient to have to retest after driving for 15+ years, I completely understand why there’s no reciprocity lol
Peter. I live in Wales and we get no charge prescriptions. However, our water charges are separate from the Council Tax. One thing here in Wales, and probably Scotland, all official mail must be in English and, here in Welsh. Usually very long bills and loads of paper!
I don't think it's quite the same here in Scotland. I don't think I've ever received a bill in Gaelic. Some of the ambulances I've seen have their text in both English and Gaelic though, which I think is pretty cool!
@@peterkonradort The Welsh Nationalist party (Plaid Cymru) and off shoots waged a paper war against the UK government to insist that Welsh should be an official language. They eventually won so we have all bills in both Welsh & English, my old paper driving licence was huge, about 2 sheets of foolscap paper. Now we have S4C that's an extra channel in Welsh, our English Ch 4 is CH7 on our TV's. I don't speak much Welsh, but my Nepuew and his two children live in Bala, North Wales and they spoke Welsh before English.
Hi Peter, I just found your Channel. We moved from Germany to Scotland about the same time as you did. Nice to see your experiences in this country. Hope you are well. Do you also speak German? Have a good time - greetings from Perth, Sebastian. 🌞
@@peterkonradort Ok, habe dich aber sofort verstanden 🙂Es reicht auf jeden Fall noch, um gut zu kommunizieren! Freue mich, deinen Kanal gefunden zu haben - tolle Infos. But we can switch back to english again. Why did you choose Ayrshire to move to in Scotland?
Danke! I chose Ayrshire for one reason alone. This is where I found a house that was in my budget, fairly nice, and that would rent to me with my lack of UK rental history without making me pay 6 months rent upfront. That was literally the only reason I ended up here to begin with lol
@@peterkonradort Ah, ok - totally makes sense for me. We did it similar to start, rented an old but very good flat in Callander - loved it, being there. Now we moved to Perth (about 1,5 years ago).
I had to smile 😊when you said our tax system is more modern. I’m 77 and started work at 15yr and the tax system seems the same or similar now as it was 62 years ago.
As they say in the states, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it! I honestly have no clue if our tax system here is great or terrible in general. My only reference point to compare it to is the United States, and compared to them it’s vastly superior.
Although it is the law that kids have to be in full time education they can still be home educated, but our new government (from July 5th '24) may change this. For energy just choose Octopus. Signing a lease agreement commits you legally for at least 6 months. The UK licenses TVs. the US licenses guns. If you do not receive broadcast TV (even if over internet) you theoretically do not need a license. UK driving licenses are far superior to US licenses. Use the 12 month grace period fully go gain experience. Never insist on right of way in a car. Be courteous to other road users and DEFINITELY pedestrians.
@@peterkonradort They don't!!! God knows where they got that from. What they DO want to do is to ensure that kids who are home schooled are taught to a good standard. And that is for the kids' benefit. Fair enough. 🙂
I think they changed it recently, but the primary reason he never did was because in order to get US citizenship, he would have to give up his German citizenship and he didn’t want to do that. I’ve been a dual US/German citizen since birth. My German passport is the reason why I was able to move here, pre-brexshit. 😂
@@peterkonradort well that was awesome 🙌 and wise choice !! Very smart move …. I know things are outrageously pricey everywhere but the US is off its hinges now on affordability in most places . God Bless Peter and enjoy buddy 💪✊👊🙌🙏🏆

Hey Peter tell the tv license to “do one” always !! 😊
I hope 🤞you’re enjoying your life in Scotland 🏴✊👊💪🏆🤙🙏
I know people moan about the TV licence but when you consider that it's cheaper than TH-cam's ad-free subscription, it seems like a huge bargain!
Except there’s lots of things of good quality on TH-cam, can’t say that about the BBC anymore

Generally you take your meter readings but every now and then they come and do spot checks.
