Hanseatic Inspiration - Saying Goodbye With Both Horns and Music

  • Here is the departure of the expedition ship Hanseatic Inspiration from Duluth, Minnesota late on the afternoon of June 4, 2023. She had spent approximately 11 hours in port, docked at Port Terminal to allow her passengers a chance to explore the Duluth area. (Her arrival in the morning was documented in another video on this channel.) For her departure, many of the passengers were out on deck to observe the passage through the shipping canal onto Lake Superior... and wave at the people on the pier who gathered to see them off.
For her first departure from Duluth, we got a traditional captain's salute from the Hanseatic Inspiration, with the Aerial Lift Bridge responding in return. Then came something I've never heard before... the ship started to play music through her loudspeakers! I'm not sure what the tune was. It kind of felt like the soundtrack to a commercial, if I'm being perfectly honest. I guess it was played to "inspire" those on land to sail on an upcoming cruise on the Inspiration. More inspiring for me, however, was another long blast of the ship's horn as she made her way through the shipping canal.
I didn't follow the Hanseatic Inspiration down the canal to watch her clear the lighthouses like I normally would, as the classic lake freighter Hon. James L. Oberstar was not that far behind the Inspiration, making her own departure. So I stayed glued to my position to cover the Oberstar. As fun as it is to watch these cruise ships visit the Twin Ports, my real interest lies in watching the lake freighters... especially the classic ones. Stay tuned for that video soon!
The 452-foot Hanseatic Inspiration was launched in 2019 in Norway. Her sister ships the Hanseatic Nature and Hanseatic Spirit were launched in 2019 and 2021, respectively, and sail for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. She has seven decks and a gross tonnage of 15,650 tons. Her passenger capacity is 230, which is reduced to 199 for Antarctic expeditions. Her crew capacity is approximately 175, meaning that she has nearly a 1.3 to 1 ratio of passengers to crew. She is powered by a diesel electric motor and carries an ice class rating of PC6, the highest of an passenger carrying ship.

The Hanseatic Inspiration...A beautiful afternoon to be sailing and..a sleek ship no doubt...your shot of her in the turn was great, a captivating sight.. Beautiful afternoon views of sunlight and shadows you have captured on this one.
Thanks for your dedication and time to bring it!

Thanks Carolyn. As it turned out the Hanseatic Inspiration returned to Duluth today. A totally unplanned coincidence!

Been an interesting start to the shipping season. There's some saltie ships visiting Duluth for the first time, a visit from a luxury liner, and all the old favorites. With more to come! Thank you as always for taking the time to document the shipping scene in Duluth and Two Harbors. 👍👍

Bro, you were correct to stay the course. Lake freighters are the bread and butter! Good video as always!

What a wonderfully done video my friend! I don't think I've ever heard music playing like that on departure....or arrival for that matter. Think they should have played the Love Boat tv show theme? Either way I was fun. And that final blast was cool. All in all, I very much enjoyed this video. Makes me want to take a cruise!

Another Captain getting Bonus Points with the extra horn blast to please the crowd of onlookers. Yep, the cruise ships are an interesting change of pace to see with their beautiful lines, but I agree with you that the Lakers are still the most impressive to see. As always, thanks for the catch and the info.

I've said it before... I'd rather do a two-day trip on a lake freighter than a two-week trip on a cruise ship!

@@1Long2Short Well, that kind of depends on what ports that cruise ship is destined for...... like the Bahamas in the winter time?

In the winter in the northern hemisphere, I think she heads south to Antarctica for their “summer.” 🥶

This looks like a very nice way to cruise, without the 3,000 other people crammed in worse than sardines. I think it's great that the cruise ships come into port and are so friendly ~ maybe I'll put this on my bucket list too!

She sure is smoky for being built in 2019. Must have been able to get a Tier 2 waiver.

I noticed the same on her arrival. Maybe some engine fine tuning? You couldn't see even a wisp of smoke from Viking Octantis.

Perhaps they could require all of the passengers to bring a suitcase of taconite on board, so they can do double duty!

Was that last blast directed at the crowd or the sailboat in front of the canal?

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not entirely sure. If a sallboat was in the way, they should have sounded five (or more) short blasts. I suspect it was a blast for the crowds.
