Macaroni, for some outrageous reason, referred to over-the-top, foppish fancy dress and the punch line was that colonists were such rustics they would call a feather macaroni. Hey, but we beat the stuffin out of them anyway....

    • @jennaflint977

This refers to the giant FEATHER! Called a Macaroni 🤷‍♀️

    • @kcjd8659
      @kcjd8659 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jennaflint977 “macaroni” essentially meant upper class in this case. So the burn is that a yankee bumpkin thought all he had to do to dress like/fit in with the upper class was stick a feather in his cap. The timing of the song is very important to understanding the meaning, because just a few years later, “macaroni” came to mean *overly* showy/overly flamboyant, to absurdity. Past absurdity really, it seems. And that really doesn’t seem to be the point in the song. But the song was written, I believe, when it essentially just meant trendy upper class fancy, like aspirational in this case. The mode of dress originally deemed “macaroni” was brought back by the upper class from their continental tours, along with a taste for “exotic” continental cuisine, like Italian food…macaroni.

    • @kcjd8659

The Ford Tractor in this video took me back to my childhood as a Dairy Farmers daughter in Minnesota. My father had one just like it. I became fascinated with history when I found my first arrowhead on our property. Then while visiting with my mother, I met an elderly woman who had grown up on a farm near us where she lived all her life. She held me spell bound talking about journeying with her father when she was a child to trade with the Native Americans who were just on the other side of our woods. This simple tale has shaped the rest of my life.

The chicken and dumplings I grew up eating was a homemade chicken soup with carrots, onion, and celery (and shredded chicken, of course), topped with actual plain dumplings and then covered so they boil from the bottom and steam on top. Properly done, they're fully cooked through and not overly soggy. Plus, they thicken the soup a bit. Man, I need to go get some ingredients and make that again, I haven't had it in about 20 years.

    Leather britches.
String green beans on a long thread and hang in a well ventilated room so they will dehydrate until they feel like leather straps.
Store dryed beans in jars, well sealed crocks, etc.
To eat recontitute in soups and/or stews, or boiling broth/water.

I love watching you cook, peaceful and meditative with just the sounds of cooking and the fire. You were speaking about the Boston Massacre, and I was visiting Boston and went to Durgin Park (which has since closed), along with The Oyster House which were the oldest restaurants in America. I ordered their Yankee Pot Roast, and the first bite I took, I remembered having that exact taste before, but not in this life. The menu was the same from the opening of the restaurant back in the 1700s. Have you ever experienced this, tasting something that you knew you never actually ate before, but is completely familiar? Thanks for your channel, and recipes. Blessings.

When I was about 6 years old, I got a little purple chicken for Easter. I named him "Peep Peep". Well, Peep Peep grew up to be a big white, scary rooster just like Colonel Sanders. He would scare the hell out of me because he'd chase me around the yard and try to attack me. I remember trying to run from one end of the yard to the other to avoid getting spurred. Eventually, he got me and spurred my back. I was bleeding all over my back. Well, my dad got his shot gun and immediately took care of peep peep. He threw him over the fence into the woods and that was the end of him! lol

Love watching your videos! In fact I live across the river and my friend and I took a drive to your neck of the woods yesterday and ate at one of your favorite restaurants in town! We see why you love the Old Brick House! We let them know you guys were responsible for the business they got yesterday. They seemed quite proud! Keep up the great work! I’d love to learn more about what you guys do!

Here in North Dakota, it has been a very snowy winter and we have not gotten above 40 degrees since back in November - 118 days - and most of those days were below freezing.

That looks awesome. The only thing that could possibly make it better would be bacon 🥓 😁 and maybe some garlic.

My mamaw and my mother have always made chicken & dumplings with drop biscuit batter. I prefer that to the more doughy squares that are the “traditional” style of dumplings.

This whole winter in Pittsburgh - no snow and ice. 70° a couple of days. We had 2 brief cold spells. Actually the forecast for March is more 'normal' Temps - 40s mostly and maybe a bit of snow.

Great video as always Ron and Justine. I'm working on a video about Parmesan cheese at the moment, so I have to jump in with some of the information I found. From what I found Parmesan does come from Italy and was invented sometime before the 13th century, and might even go back to Roman times. Interestingly, Thomas Jefferson watched Parmesan being made in Northern Italy as part of that tour around Europe that you mentioned and the method is very similar to Italian Parmigiano-Reggiano today. It ships really well, but would've been really expensive to send to America by ship.

We are happy you are almost done with your road. My husband worked at a rock quarry for over 30 years- drove a dump truck for many years. He noticed something about the rock being laid down. He says its important to put larger rock on top of the soil before laying the gravel down. This is because after it rains a lot the mud will seep through the smaller rocks and in time you will have a muddy road. I do hope this doesn't happen. Maybe you can research what we have told you. .... cannot wait to see your home being built ..we are discussing flying down there to visit your town...if I can muster up courage to get on a plane.
