I think saying Walt's behaviour is down to a coping mechanism is being too kind. Walt has spent his entire life being trodden on and emasculated by people who were clearly less intelligent than him. Him cooking starts with good intentions but his true addiction is the power and that is the REAL Walt

4:45 I saw this show a few years ago and didn't think much of this part but in the meantime I had a bad accident (coma for a couple of months level), barely survived, did all the physio, came back and I see this part in a new light. You go through these both stages. Why me? Why the accident? Why did I survive? Why was I lucky? It puts things in a whole new perspective and It's tough to wrap your head around this concept of life/death, if you deserve it, would you have done something differently, how will you deal with everything that changed you etc.

  • @havok6280
    @havok6280 ปีที่แล้ว +22

It's not really about addiction for Walt. Recall the pissing match with Hank over the tequila.
This show is ultimately about masculinity. What does it mean to be a man? In the beginning Walt was henpecked by Skylar, immasculate by Hank, and a failure professionally. Cooking makes Walt feel like a man, a provided.

You said "it makes him feel like a man." I don't think that is why he does it. It seems more like it makes him feel alive. In one of the very first episodes he told Jessie he was "awake." Then he told Jessie "this is the first day of the rest of your life." Walt's brush with death opened his eyes and became a risk taker and loves it.

This is when Walter's entire "I do it for my family" gets thrown out the window. At this point on, Walter's ego was allowed to slowly take him over. That's ultimately the result of the Hank blowup. It's all ego.

I love when your videos go this deep on the psychoanalysis. Even as someone who's spent way too much time thinking about Breaking Bad, you manage to broaden my perspective. I also love that you empathize with both sides of many of the conflicts in the show. I probably root for Walt more than I should, but I also adore Skyler and feel like she puts up with or even forgives way more of Walt's behavior than anyone should.
A lot of the areas where you're not sure which side to take, I think that's usually the point. The glimpses we're shown of the characters' histories are there to give us an understanding where the character's motivations come from, but usually stop short of giving us answers with regard to whether they're justified in that perspective. We need to know that Walt has been secretly nursing a grudge against Gretchen and Elliot for close to 3 decades, but not necessarily whether the grudge is warranted (Gretchen seems genuinely shocked to learn Walt sees things this way, but she could be in the dark about something Elliot might have done or could have bought into a self-absolving narrative). We need to know that Jesse and Jane both have difficult relationships with their parents, but not necessarily whether the problem is their own misbehavior or their parents' unreasonableness. We don't need to know whether Skyler stopped working for Ted because she was disgusted with his behavior or because she was tempted by him but chose loyalty to Walt. We just need to know that there's history there, and that it's informing the characters' behavior now.
There is a throwaway line in the final season of Better Call Saul that subtly puts a finger on one side of the scale on the Walt vs. Gretchen and Elliot conflict, but that always bothered me since 1) it seems like cheating to tip the scale from outside the self-contained story of Breaking Bad and 2) I have long felt that the opposite interpretation adds a considerable amount of poignancy to the culmination of that storyline within Breaking Bad.

There's probably something going wrong with copyright but this episode is feeling a lot worse, not only because of shoving the show footage into a tiny box, but specially because of talking over the scenes

Wow. Talk about toxic feminism. Rationalizing Skyler's cheating and emotional abuse of Walt while condemning them when done by men. What double standard BS.
It is either always wrong or always acceptable. Situational morality is crap.

    • @MapleDivine

You’re obviously working through some strong feelings. In no way is anyone’s behavior in this show appropriate or excusable - lol - that’s the whole point of the show. You’re misunderstanding our comments and not realizing we dissect things it is from a writing perspective. It’s an analysis of what the writers were thinking or maybe trying to convey. Seeing as you’re this upset about “toxic feminism” or whatever man v woman jargon then the writers of BB are winning! In getting an emotional response from you..
I wish you luck it seems like some introspection and letting go of emotions is in order as feminism is heavy on your mind! 🫶🏼

      Two things:
      1. Toxic feminism is absolutely a thing. But this wasn’t it, my guy.
      2. Situation morality is crap, but everyone in history not named Jesus Christ has participated in it so there’s no high horse to be on here.

Walt is definitely NO saint, but Skylar genuinely started to get on my nerves starting around this time in the show to the point that her scenes became nearly unbearable to watch/re-watch. If the writers intentionally wanted viewers to hate her character, I feel like they beyond succeeded in that.
