  • Being cultivated in the villages around Phnom Kulen National Park in Cambodia, the black ginger, also known as Thai ginseng, is known to have health benefits such as curing liver problems and digestive stomach disorders.
To develop the black ginger’s potential as a sustainable source of income for the villagers, while ensuring the biodiversity richness of the Phnom Kulen National Park, the Biodiversity-based Products (BBP) as an Economic Source for the Improvement of Livelihoods and Biodiversity Protection project introduced the villagers to sustainable means of growing, harvesting, and drying of the black ginger.
Funded by the German government through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit GmbH and implemented by the GFA Consulting Group and the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, the BBP project was piloted in three different ASEAN Member States. The Phnom Kulen National Park in Cambodia was one of the pilot sites.
