Without a shadow of doubt this is the best tutorial I have seen in the last years. And I don’t mean about specific watercolor painting but about the creation process in general. Is clear, deep, inspiring and explained in a wonderfully simple way. Amazing artist, deep thinker and great communicator. Thank you for posting this.

I am so impressed with this man. I have heard about doing value studies forever and this is the first time it actually made sense to me as it pertains to the initial thinking part of painting process. I'll start doing a value study and an initial serious sketch. ThaNK YOU SO MUCH.

I started out as a watercolorist, but I am a silk painter. Being a terrible watercolorist and an okay pastelist made me a good silk painter - go figure?!
Anyway, I paint portraits of people, pets and wildlife. I dislike painting architecture and landscapes myself, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the work of Thomas Schaller! His pieces have so much life and an other worldly glow. He is so gifted and he makes it look so easy, lol!

I love how Tom paints. I've loved his work for many years now. I've learned so much from him - and that's just videos! I'd love to take a workshop of his!

It would be such an honor to have a teacher like this. He reminded of what I loved most about art class in high school, the people I loved being around, a talented sensitive teacher, her amazing 2 week substitute, allowing me remain and work alone in class for hours after school as long as the supply closet was locked before leaving, freedom to explore. Sawdust Festivals and galleries of Laguna Beach, annual street art festivals on Catalina Island, being around other artists while knowing we were in this creative mindset together. This video also allowed us to see the child inside the man and vulnerabilities we all feel from time to time, how truly human it is to feel all of these things. Thank you for sharing this kind hearted gentle man with us, the ride through his world was exquisite and sentimentally blessed with loving memories and an amazing skill in expression.

I enjoyed your Video very much, listening to your explanations has made me look for new ideas to assist with my journey. I have only painted with oil to this stage . I am tiring in the clean up and the solvents . I am really interested in watercolor and you have given me the inspiration to picking up the brush and getting some brush millage. I am very much an armature although my paintings are worthy of hanging in my own home. I need to develop this journey

I love Mr Schaller’s art and his teaching. I was fortunate enough to have taken one of his workshops and learned so much from this very talented, yet humble and kind artist. I am far from being a good artist now, but his workshop set me on the right course for learning how to paint in watercolor. Hope to be able to attend his workshops again in the future.

Thank you so much for this. I've been trying to paint for years and although I'm capable, my paintings are rather boring. Your advice is going to make such a difference to how I approach a subject, especially the reasons to sketch from life and not from reference photos. I will use my sketchbook more and hopefully my paintings will reflect what caught my eye in the first place. This is a generous and useful gift to anyone in lock-down who is looking for new inspiration. Thanks again. Stay safe everyone. X

A video just full of information and explanations so clearly put. I have watched it several times now and each time I learn a little more. One subject you mention, Thomas, is your preference for sediment-based colours as opposed to those of staining. It is a subject apart I feel but I am trying to work out when to use which. Should a stain-based colour precede a sediment-based, or the contrary, or is it variable according to what one is painting? If it is possible to clarify just a little I would really appreciate it. Your work is beautiful, full of life and inspiring. Thank you !

  • @paultaylor6167

Enjoy your methods and approach. I wonder how many viewers realize that the term Horizon Line, at least in the absence of the ocean horizon per say, is in actuality the Eye Level line of the viewer when a photo it taken. We can design our paintings for two eye levels using the rule of thirds. The artist decides if that eye level results in a better design with a line 1/3 from the bottom, or from the top. This provides a larger sky or larger foreground. Which makes a stronger design? Drawing a sketch as you do is paramount to making this decision.
