Czech Panzer, German Blitzkrieg | Panzer 38(t) Ausf.A (part 2)

  • From 1942 on, it was obvious to the Germans that the Panzer 38(t) was becoming obsolete as a main frontline combat vehicle. For this reason, most Panzer 38(t) were being retired from service and reallocated to secondary duties. Over 351 turrets taken from this tank were used as stationary bunkers all around occupied Europe. Other vehicles were reused as training tanks, put on trains, or even as ammunition vehicles. While the sources do not mention the precise versions of these modifications, some were probably also of the Ausf. A version. As the Panzer38(t) proved to have outstanding performance, it was heavily used by the Germans for many modifications during the war, but probably the most well known are the tank hunters.

Close on 1 000 Pz 35t and Panzer 38t were used for Barbarossa. That of a total force of 3 580 tanks, some 1 000 of which were still light Panzer IIs. Makes one wonder whether the invasion of the Soviet Union would have been possible without the Czechoslovakian tanks.

One of the most under appreciated tank designs of the war. Fantastic at the start, but eclipsed by mid war. Key to early German success.

Yes. I really like the 38(t). It reminds me of a mini T-34.

Very valuable information, also very extensive. All that I could think of was in the video, but not all subjects are equally interesting to me. Maybe you could work with chapters - possibly devided over several videos? In that way your audience can skip certain chapters if they like. For instance, I am more interested in the ergonomic layout of the tank, it's use of radio equipment and it's front line use. But the very beginning, how it came to be and how it came into German hands, was valuable information too, but was a bit too extensive for me - so the sale of previous models all around the world I would rather have skipped.

Peru purchased 24 of these tanks from Czechoslovakia and used them against Ecuador in 1941. The Peruvian army also used paratroopers to occupy the port of Guayaquil. Ecuador complained to the League of Nations that German troops were assisting the Peruvian Army

Will there be a part 3, which will for ex. cover its chassis use all around the world ? Thank you for a great and informative video.

Unfortunately, no. We will have separate articles on each of the chassis variants (some of the Marder IIIs, Flakpanzer 38(t) are already done in text format).

0.58 - 1.14 theres some sort of audio issue , thought id let you know. Great videos on one of my favourite tanks and I’m really glad you got around to doing them , is there also any chance of doing a more in-depth video on the 35t aswell ? Thank you , have a great day : Cassidy :)

Hey Cassidy, apologies about that. We cut that section, but TH-cam is still processing that.
As for the 35t, we already have a good article about that on the website and we will most probably not cover it further. We might cover the original LT vz.35, Romanian R-2 and Bulgarian T-11 though.

In the first episode you mentioned, how germany surprisingly paid for ordered tanks. There is no way around that in economy, slave labour does not work. But there is paying and paying. Germany enforced exchange rate between czechoslovakian crown and reichs marks, which was a total rip off. These factories were thrown into existentional crisis, and their directors were threatened by gestapo. Monetary payment was not a reward, but rather a sustenance to keep the production going.
