We take a look at Phish's second Festival the Great Went from the fan's perspective. Episode 02 of a new series
As a sequel to the Clifford Ball, the Great Went was held in August 1997 at the former Loring Air Force Base (now the Loring Commerce Centre) in Limestone, Maine. The name of the event comes from a line in a David Lynch movie, Fire Walk With Me, which is itself a reference to an episode of Twin Peaks. This is as far north and east as you can get and not be in Canada, in a beautiful area, in blueberry (and black fly) season.

I did the majority of summer 98 and the Lemonwheel. I've been telling people for yrs how the whole way up in Maine people waving in lawnchairs and so kind and welcoming.
I can also say that the show before was one of my top 5 and I think very overlooked. Vernon Downs in upstate NY. Opened with Lagrange, "Vernon down the house", YEM encore.

KIDS NOT WOOKS...KIDS...PHISH KIDS! I did every show summer 97 19 years old. Whatever it's just what I did, I already was on further tour prior and hopped off and headed to Virginia Beach and ended up in Maine 2 months later or whatever after going east to west back east. No I was not inside every night but almost all. I'm not going to write a novel. All I'm going to say it was one of the best experiences of my life and ending at the Went made it that much more amazing!!! Two words GROUND SCORES leaving after everyone was gone pretty much. Another two words... CLOTHES ON....Aside from when I met a naked girl or two whatever, it's just what I did.... another two words YOU'RE WELCOME to alot of folks who came with no paper, gel, or fungus I risked my freedom to enhance your adventure. Whatever, it's just what I did...THE GIN!!! The energy was unmatched, I've never watched a video of it....never will...I do listen to it but very seldom. It was an EXPERIENCE....This...it was, is and was.....it came and WENT, good job thanks guys!!✌️❤️
I started the 5-6 hour massive drum circle. I played for hours and couldn’t make a fist for days afterwards. For those with vid, I was the guy wearing a long red “JC PENNY 93” shirt

You all been doing extremely well with these phish tales episode …😢 my sad story was. I was on the way to the great went till me and driver did not get along with… the people I was with was not a good vibe unfortunately I requested to drop me off day after the Starlake show …So glad I caught thay show, I think Page should really bring back some Elton Jonn covers on lead vocals looking so forward to the next phish shows this summer…I’m sure you all are too this.

I just remember driving through endless pine trees on the way and the runways being the shakedown like area. I know it's not news to anyone, but the memories if checking Andrew's Phish page every day in college.
I was a rafting guide on the Kennebec River in Maine that year. Hitchhiked there solo. Some power bars and a bag of mushrooms. Slithered to the front. So fun.

My journey there wasn’t great, but when we got there, these interviews summed it up perfectly! Such great memories! I also got to pass the band’s art back. I’m surprised no one commented on the disappearing act they pulled after they lit the fire! Maybe that was my own experience 🤷♂️

I recognize names here. AG, i recall sitting on the internet way way back in the days paying attention to andy gadiel's phish page/forum every day I especially remember the days of Tube. Do you remember that Andy? We were all salivating for that song. I memorized that song from that point on. AG's phish page got me into the internet.
And now with less bush!?! Doh!!
