Thom Yorke explained what it’s like to feel trapped in your mind AMAZINGLY! Especially for how the world viewed mental issues like depression back then. He was 100% right about the fact that you can’t escape it. You just can’t. We can’t just “cheer up”
takes you a while to get into their music. when my mate showed me some of their songs i was like "whoah WTF is this shit?!" But now i cant get enough of em. by far the most awesome and innovative rock band!
I hated OK Computer and everything after until I went through all of The Bends I still don't tolerate everything they have, but I like a little bit more than I did before
Gitai Vinshtok I bet she thought asking him to do the interview without having eye contact might actually make him more comfortable and easier for him to open up
She asked questions that did not probe him or his band. In other interviews Thom can be very closed off and refusing to answer questions or give short "No" answers and won't go any further. He does not talk about the band or himself.
I've realized she's not sitting opposite him. Just beside him and avoiding eye contact. If only I could go for a job interview like that, my anxiety would not go through the roof
@@rimelgana1656the no eye contact is her idea, not his, she's probably had training in dealing W/ppl who've been diagnosed W/Anxiety disorders and mental health issues
I REMEMBER SEEING THIS INTERVIEW WHEN IT CAME OUT. It fucking changed my brain and the way I see music journalism. Sook Yin Lee, Muchmusic during this generation. Mind fucking blown.
it is 90ish type of Music Television. I miss when Much Music was doing amazing things like this. I found out that Thom Yorke really likes her and she interviewed him a ton of times when she was working at Much Music. actually I heard she was the only person he'd let interview her haha. maybe the reason why Radiohead was all over Much Music when I was a kid was because of her. :D she's my new hero in life as of today. sorry this was completely unrelated to what you said haha. :)
Why would you look something like that up? Besides none of them has ever had issues with drug addiction, why do ppl keep thinking that? Just BC of how Thom performed sometimes? Obviously no one has ever seen Joe Cocker perform, of your generation, and he wasn't on drugs either, well not every performance
It's really cool, I've heard a lot of musicians like John mayer and other pop musicians try to put philisophical meaning behind their music and it didn't sound at all realistic, and it sounded pompous, like they were trying to be more than they were, but with Thom it seems totally believable.
She is SO GOOD with him. I have never seen him have on-camera chemistry with another human being before (other than maybe Johnny), let alone a reporter.
We've see waste of time interviews where the musician don't want to be there and only give yes or no answers! Thom's just giving us something a little different; thinking outside the box!
1:16 I really like the way she said that... "you forgot, didn't you?" it felt like she was talking to me for a moment. I guess I did forget, that she is in a video from 2001 and I'm here and now. Very strange.
I couldn't look my boyfriend in the eye, it was really unnerving for me. Not that he didnt have lovely brown eyes, I just couldn't look at him for longer than a few seconds or I felt like he'd make me blow up or something.
@@claude2571 is that actually another behaviour issue? cause i have autism and i always had the struggle of keeping eye contact for even a few seconds, i truly would love to know.
@wulord Good point. The Kid A/Amnesiac era is so mind-numbingly rich with philosophical meaning, it's almost too much to answer a question like "what does amnesiac reference?" without it sounding fragmented. So, Thom answers with a deceptively simple, "timing".
I had excactly the same thing. But luckily I'm over it, over the girl and I can look into peoples eyes for longer, I just forced myself, told myself to just believe I'm awesome:P and just look at people. I now realize people aren't that scary.
She has interviewed Thom 3 x from the late 90's to early 2000's on Much Music. Also Sook Yin Lee used to be in a band herself called "Bob's Your Uncle" in the late 80's/early 90's from Vancouver Canada.
The sequence of the town before the interview really reminded me of the Burn the Witch music video. I'm also wondering if the "avoid all eye contact, do not react" is somehow related to this interview.
Bahaha! I actually stopped the video there to google, "How do British people pronounce 'hyperbole'?" I do that sort of thing a lot when I've been doing much more reading and writing than speaking. So glad he didn't decide to discard his voice for those albums, by the way!
Okay, so Thom is straight up cool with any just “human” interviewer (as long as they aren’t the dingbats). But They did this (style) of interviewing with Bowie in the 70s- only it seemed more genuine then- probably because that interviewer was the first to do that AND they knew Bowie was in to anything artsy and different. But this, to me, just seemed awkward - With her giggling and sitting in front of him. I still think Thom could’ve done the same genuine interview, if not even more dynamic, had he been allowed to have visual contact. He’s just a cool dude.
