    Fellow digital nomad here. I was in Argentina just over a year ago. When I had arrived, the blue dollar was at 270 while the official rate was less than half, about 130. I stayed in Argentina for 6 months, half of the time in Buenos Aires. When I left, the blue dollar was at 500. I've been checking in on the news on Argentina every now and then because I love Argentina and wish to come back and stay for a while again. There actually is a bank at the airport where you could have exchanged your dollars but it's kinda hidden in a corner but be glad you didn't because they exchanged at the official rate. I had some dollars in cash as well, I was staying a few blocks away from the Argentinian Presidential House and, ironically, there were tons of low profile places where you could change your dollars at the blue rate. Usually those newspaper stands you see on sidewalks. I noticed you mentioned you're staying in Palermo, so that's quite a bit far but I'm sure there are places to exchange there if you ask around. At first, I used to do the whole "wiring money to myself via Western Union" thing. A lot of people did. There was usually a long line at the WU where I went. But then, the government, in an attempt to compete against the blue dollar market, they struck a deal with card processors so they would charge at a competing rate that the goverment came up with called the MEP dollar, which now is around the same as the blue dollar. You simply pay with your credit or debit card and you either get instantly charged at the MEP rate or, in my case, you get charged at the official rate but then I would get some cash back on my card to compensate for the MEP rate after a couple of business days. Since then I would stick to just paying with my card everywhere possible. Then again, it's been over a year so I'm not sure if that has changed. Check your card statement for that. Let me know if you have any further questions. I'll be happy to answer. I do miss Argentina and wish to come back. I'm currently traveling through Georgia (the country, not the US state) and it is dirt cheap here.

      Wow it boggles my mind that 1 year ago the official rate was 130 and now it’s around 900. Is that a rate of 700% inflation? Even since I left two weeks ago the informal rate was 1,000 and now it’s 1,200… That’s a 20% inflation in that time? I hope my math is wrong here…

    Sounds like you might look into getting a Wise account, maybe?
    I'm hoping to get to Argentina before too long and this was really helpful as I know things are changing there.

    Dude, you should be eating the "asado" in Argentina. Some or the best beef the world, and at a good price ...
    And , of course , the wine !

      I appreciate that! My primary reason is to capture memories for later in life, so even if I get zero views I’ll still do it. But having a global community would create so many great opportunities so I’m committed to doing it publicly and exploring what people want to watch. Let’s go!

      I'd actually expect prices to have risen a lot more since, given that the peso has devalued another 25%. Interesting. Maybe Jumbo is just much more expensive vs other markets?

    How did you get from the airport into the city without pesos? I read that taxi drivers don't take credit cards. I'm planning to visit BA in October (I hope) and am trying to work all this out in advance.

    • @Ryan-Riegner
      @Ryan-Riegner  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I used Uber, which is attached to my debit card so it bypasses the Peso, and same for my apartment which was booked on Airbnb. Pretty much everywhere accepts debit and credit card purchases too.

      @@EsaLena1 I'd say tolerated is the right word. Sometimes Uber also has a taxi option in the app. You can check that out. Worst case, you just use it that one time to get into the city then when you have cash you can use official taxis, or cabify which I think operates there but I've honestly never tried it.

      Yep...I will be flying Houston to Buenos Aires I thought I would exchange some money at Houston Airport but I was flying elsewhere the other day and while there I asked if they had ARS and they said NO! Then I thought well I will have to wait till I land at EZE but watching this video he said no exchange places there either! I guess the day I fly I will ask Argentinian passengers if they are carrying any Pesos..Lol!
      No but seriously to get into the City I think I will use DIDI supposedly is the App they use there more than Uber.

    I'm from Argentina and our economy has always been crazy. All politics do is blame each other for stealing our money but none of them have fixed the situation. When I bought my car in 2016, gas was 1.000 pesos and now is 40.000 pesos 💀 Your math was right.

    • @Ryan-Riegner
      @Ryan-Riegner  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow a 40x increase in 8 years. If money is deflating that fast, do people take drastic action to preserve it by moving their money out of the peso, or is the strategy just to spend it as fast as it comes in? I've heard many people try to get USD, but I can't imagine everyone having US bills stashed in the walls of their homes.

    • @MiauMichigan
      @MiauMichigan หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Ryan-Riegner most people live paycheck to paycheck. Even if you can save some money, getting dolars is hard because people are forced to buy at the blue or mep rate instead of the official rate. They publish the official rate in the media but reality is most people can't buy it at a bank. On the other hand, since inflation is so high, there is a lot of speculation with prices, so people try to stash non perishable goods for the future instead of saving argentinian pesos.

    • @MiauMichigan
      @MiauMichigan หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Ryan-Riegner there was a huge economic crisis in 2001 called the "corralito". The goverment took dolar savings and converted them to pesos. On top of that, you weren't allowed to take more than $250 out of the bank. Since then, the government has always placed some kind of restriction to how many dolars you can get ("cepo al dolar"). That's why there's a parallel market that sells at a higher rate.
