yes..Madurai arasaalum start with Kaapi. In fact the song Sirithaal Sirippen sounds very much like Madurai Arasaalum.

I was trained by a Teacher with M.A in Music (particularly Violin)..
I attended his Class to learn Guitar when i was 15 years old...
It was like 90% Carnatic and 10% Western...Theory + Practical
7 to 8 hours a day...
Just like Your presentation, he used to teach us a Raaga and Sing a Film song composed in the same Raaga..
and different Thaalams as well...
Now i am 56, but love to strum my Guitar after watching many TH-cam Tutorials...(but i miss his teachings)..
