They can cut you in college. Scholarships are only one year. That’s why you have to sign your scholarship every year you go to the school. My roommate had his scholarship taken away for a new recruit.

As a college athlete you renew it yearly. Now 99 percent of players get theirs renewed. But there are plenty of cases like my roommate/teammate. He wasn’t dismissed for behavior/team rules or academic violations. They literally wanted to give his scholarship to an incoming freshman. The rule change you are talking about is probably getting to transfer without sitting out.
