  • Dive deep into grain, supplements and more with me on this video! It’s a long one but I encourage you to watch the whole thing. One of my favorite parts about doing what I do is the nutritional aspect and determining the prime diet for so many horses. Hopefully this helps you in your feed routines!

    Jeez, a lot of supplements. Im from Germany and i find its a lot different here. Firstly we dont really differentiate between hay kinds like alfalfa or timothee its just hay (I feed extra alfalfa pellets in the winter to keep weight on). I only feed hay, black oats(has more minerals and resistance against mold) , one kind of mineral pellets and spirulina for aminoacids . I check like once every 6 months the blood for deficiencies. There is a huge discussion about no oats or oats, and I have to say, I see nothing wrong in feeding oats, it has a lot of energy stored and is easy to digest. I see a lot of people mixing a lot of stuff together, especially with herbs, but I'm never really sure if it only affects the purse and not the horse.

    I am curious about the feeds containing beet pulp- do they also need to be soaked, or do they pre-soak it for convenience? I know beet pulp is really good for many horses, but the soaking can be a pain...
    I completely agree about the Smart Paks, a couple boarders use them at my barn and the waste is ERGREGIOUS, haha- some of the ladies make their own with little reusable plastic containers, it works just as well! The amount of supplements you use reminds me of how much I used to spend on my old horse who was an underweight hard keeper. Back then I was a broke college student and I was trying my best. He was on ProForce Fuel which killed my wallet. My current barrel mare is an easy keeper and I only have her on 5 simple supplements. Currently on Nutrena SafeChoice Original. She gets SmartDigest, Smart n Simple Turmeric pellets for natural joint support, Smart n Simple Tart Cherry pellets for muscle recovery, Cocosoya (or DAC oil currently cause TSC was sold out) for skin/coat health and a natural inflammatory response, and CBD to help her focus because she likes to get ahead of herself.

    • @ghirardelli1597
      @ghirardelli1597 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry that I am not her, but wanted to tell you what I’ve done with my horse based on vet’s recommendation. Prascend is the only recommended medication to take to help with levels of the horses and reducing/eliminating symptoms of cushings. Along with this, we have him on a low NSC(non structural carbohydrate) diet. You can analyze your hay and get back these percentages as well as your grain will have it on their label. After researching and talking to my vet, you want the lowest NSC possible(preferably 14% or below). As well as this, if your horse is metabolic, wearing a muzzle when he or she is out on grass is helpful too to prevent laminitis.

I have a gelding who is a nervous wreck during fire works even when i stall him and he refuses to leave the stall for 3+ days afterwords. i’ve tried a bunch of calming sups and they just make him really tired which i don’t particularly like.

    Hey, just a question for anyone really! Do you feed your horse/s a bucket feed + hay + grazing time!? Or is it not necessary to feed your horse hay if it’s getting a bucket feed with chaff & pellets!? Thanks! 😊

    • @neuvillions8756
      @neuvillions8756 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Samantha Clarke I dont know if people handle things different from country to country, but in Germany we say that hay is the most important feed. Without hay it doesnt matter what you feed your horse, they will suffer with their digestion . So my horse weighs ~ 600 kg and gets 12 kg hay a day. But he is still very slim which is why he still gets fed soaked alfalfa-mix, „pellets“ and grazing time. Maybe this helped you a bit :)

    • @bethrempel1563
      @bethrempel1563 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My horse is underweight right now, so on top of 24/7 pasture grazing he also gets hay 2x a day and grain 1x a day. Normally my horses just get hay during the winter and while the grass is regrowing.(I’m western Canada for reference)

      @@kbequestrian128 exactly! I have a very, very hot horse, who spookes at everything and we had tried so many different calming things, but nothing sadly works. 🤣 so that was money out the window. 😂 but since there are no competitions we feed jim some that is on the doping list and holy crap that works, so well! And it only takes 4 days for it to be out of their system, so its also really easy to control if competetions come back this year.

      I’ve always been taught to cold soak beet pulp. When you add moisture to beer pulp, it expands. It is much much safer to have that expansion occur outside of the body rather than in the digestive tract. As well, it’s easier for the body to digest beet pulp when it is soaked (less hydrochloric acid needed to break down the feed, which also decreased chance of ulcers in ulcer prone horses)

A horse that was on it had a super full coat and a very stiff gait, though he had tons of energy. When he was taken off it and switched to Triple Crown 30 (with added fats), he changed drastically. My thoroughbred also did really badly on it. All horses are different though!
