- The Shadow (1994) was directed by Russell Mulcahy, based on the character of the same name created by Walter B. Gibson in 1931, with Alec Baldwin as Lamont Cranston, The Shadow; John Lone as Shiwan Khan; Penelope Ann Miller as Margo Lane; Peter Boyle as Moses "Moe" Shrevnitz; Ian McKellen as Dr. Reinhardt Lane; Tim Curry as Farley Claymore and Jonathan Winters as Wainwright Barth.
In 30's New York City, the Shadow battles his nemesis, Shiwan Khan, who is building an atomic bomb.
In case you guys didn't know, Batman was based on The Shadow. There is a awesome episode ("Beware the Gray Ghost") in Batman Animated Series (90s), they had Adam West (the first live action Batman) voice a character (Gray Ghost) that was very familiar to "The Shadow". It brought me some tears in my eyes when I saw this episode where this character works with Batman (Kevin Conroy, the best Batman voice) to fight crime. The Gray Ghost (DC's The Shadow copy) was Bruce Wayne child hood hero, and the Gray Ghost is now a old retired man trying to make a living (living in a crappy apartment with having difficulties following his career path). This is an emotional and beautiful episode for all Batman fans to enjoy.

The Spirit was what The Grey Ghost was based on.
Although technically Batman is a blatant plagiarized copy of the Shadow dubbed "clowned up Shadow" with zero originality, I due feel this movie could of been slightly better without the campiness included. That being said, I think the Shadow's true history should be incorporated into a new film taken straight from the classic radio show. Also the Shadow is far more intimidating than Batman.

So, Sam Raimi couldn't get the Rights for The Shadow or Batman. He then decided to create his own superhero movie with Darkman. They then use music from Darkman for The Shadow trailer.
For fans of The Shadow, currently in pre-production, is our series "The Shadow Strikes". Filmed in black and white while keeping that visual style of the 1994 film, but taking a darker tone like the original, will introduce a new generation to the Master of Darkness...The Shadow.....who knows when he will STRIKE? This summer he returns.....
This movie makes me want to watch with the lights off and make us feel we’re in The Shadows.
Ironic, they used Danny Elfman's Darkman theme for this, and Darkman was inspired by Shadow since Raimi couldn't get the rights to make Batman or The Shadow.

I noticed that too that the darkman theme is being used in the shadow trailer. It's the same with the RoboCop trailer, they use the terminator theme in that one.

I suggest you to watch The Shadow Strikes, a fan edit that turns this movie to B&W and cuts some moments to make the character more mysterious. It's amazing.

Both Shiwan Khan and The Mandarin (at least in the comics) were inspired by Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu.

Sam Raimi lobbied to direct the film back in the 1980's but it was felt that he wasn't experienced enough to take on a big action movie. So instead, he created Darkman.
Funny enough, they use Darkman's theme song for this teaser.

As one who personally loves the darkness and sleeping in it, I can definitely relate to the Shadow.
Normally, I'm against remakes, but I think this movie needs one. The Shadow is such a cool character, and deserves better than this.

Alec Baldwin does a good job of capturing Orson Welles while at the same time bringing his own style. The success of Batman '89 helped encourage other movies which became cult classics in their own right such as Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy and of course this film as well. Unfortunately what people think are rehashes of things they saw before were in fact stolen from the *Shadow* world first...Did you *really* think Batman, Star Wars and James Bond were original concepts? This film was robbed. I cannot say enough, however I will leave you with this thought...'94s *THE SHADOW* should have received the acclaim films like "Jurassic Park" and "GoldenEye" were falsely awarded with.

I saw this on TV a long time ago. Don't remember much of it, but I do want to give this a watch again sometime. I haven't seen anything with Alec Baldwin yet that I would consider bad.

god this statement couldn'T be more wrong, the look of comicbook movies these days is ultracheap has no style or mood to it, this on the other hand was done pre cgi era , is stunning looking , I'm amazed how movies (like the first 3 batman movies or this) looked , and compare it the sorry excuse for movies these days
