    Fun idea as you begin your OB-Gyn career: start a delivery bead jar! For each delivery put a pink or blue bead corresponding to the gender of the baby or a white bead for any angel babies. This is something I wish I had done when I started as a L&D nurse!

    I’ve dreamt of being an OBGYN since I was a child. Obviously as I got older many things changed & I let people get into my head as well. Now I’m 22 and I’m back to the og plan. It’s either that or becoming a psychiatrist. I love watching these videos and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

    I started watching your videos while studying for the MCAT about 3 years ago and now I’m starting med school at a DO school in just a few weeks. So awesome. - what’s great about Dr. Southard’s blogs is that it follows her from before med school, through all four years and now residency. I’ve followed many med students’ vlogs but hers is amazing! Also, I love how she worked hard and excelled, never happy with just a passing grade, always striving for the highest. So great!

    I remember having my daughter. The doctor that delivered her was on her first shift and my baby was her first delivery! Was such an amazing moment ❤️ i cannot wait to hear all about your first baby you deliver!
    You should start a jar with pink, blue and white beads for all the babies you help enter the world ❤❤ tie twin beads together. Could be so neat to see it fill up.

    • @mashiyatahmed
      @mashiyatahmed ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, I’m not sure. I really want to do graduate research into the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics and neuroplasticity. I want to be able to bring these interesting topics to students and endorse their passion. All of this requires a Ph.D. though.
      Also, I’m always interested in doing health communications work for humanitarian agencies around the world, so that’s also a viable career option. I wanted to go to medical school maybe at the start of university, but I quickly realized I had doubts, and that someone else would probably be more passionate than me about healthcare (therefore, the med student position should probably go to them).

    Hey Rachel, love your stuff! I start med school in July and wanted to give you some advice from a book I recently read called When Breath Becomes Air. The quote reads: "Even if you are perfect, the world isn’t. The secret is to know that the deck is stacked, that you will lose, that your hands or judgment will slip, and yet still struggle to win for your patients. You can’t ever reach perfection, but you can believe in an asymptote toward which you are ceaselessly striving."

    I'm sure that this will not be a epiphany to you, BUT.....I graduated from law school with honors. My first job as a lawyer was Dep. D.A. in L.A. County. Despite graduating with honors, I felt as if I didn't know s*** about the actual practice of law in real life. Without writing 10 paragraphs, I had little confidence. However, whether it's a new doctor, new lawyer, or new house painter,-----they know more after 1 year than they did when they started; they knew still more after 2 years than after 1 year, etc., etc. I'm sure this was true for Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and LaBron James. You get the picture. So, in those moments when you feel as if you're almost incompetent, just remember the simple concept of gaining confidence as you gain experience. And gaining experience obviously involves the passage of time, whether we like it or not. I hesitated taking up space in comments by writing this because I'm sure you already realize it. BUT-----just wanted to say it as "one professional to another"----sort of "been there, done that".

My biggest motivation for my own continuing education was not being 'the best lawyer in the country',----rather not to be embarrassed in front of judges or other peers/lawyers. :) It worked well. Congrats! You are going to be amazing. When I first started as a new grad nurse in the icu you reminded me to give myself some grace. And I say it at least one time a shift still. So when it gets challenging give yourself grace! Thank you for sharing!

    I absolutely wish I could have you as my ob even if you’re a resident! I would love having you in my room! Your energy would be so amazing to have in the delivery room!

    I've been watching since your First Week of Med School video. So happy and proud to see your journey continue in a field you have so much passion for-now was a resident physician!

    I am so excited and proud of you! I had a horrible experience which required an unexpected hospital visit the last 2 days at 35wks. I'm home now and watching this video is the only thing that has calmed me down and learning a bit more through your orientation experience on hows and whys. I'm hoping to keep baby safe for a few more weeks until full term. Loving your videos and passion, keep at it ❤️

    I’ve been a subscriber to your channel for awhile now and I couldn’t be any more excited for you. The whole internship/residency experience is such a special time and I definitely had challenges but overall I still look at it fondly. I adored my fellow residents and the process was totally worth it. I did a different specialty (neurology) but I remember loving OB/GYN as a student and love my OB as an adult. She’s wonderful.
    Also, study for the last step, but not too hard. I found it to be way easier than I expected (as an overthinker like you). I worried about it, even though no one cared what the result was aside from passing.
    The whole residency process goes by much more quickly than you think and then you are flying solo, so absorb all the knowledge and try to enjoy it! Congratulations 🎉🎈🎊🍾!
