Also, if you are on septic the whey helps keep that clean! Somehow it's not as wasteful as one would think. It can save you a cost in pumping the septic tank as often.
THE GREATEST VIDEO..Im an X dairy farmer, I see so many sites on getting a family cow. The questions people ask, after the go out and buy some random cow. The questions they ask, you would think they never saw a cow ever.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m new to the family milk cow realm (recently got a jersey and probably jumped into it too soon without enough knowledge 🤷🏼♀️🙈) and I’m in that “oh crap, what did I do” mode. This helped me take some deep breaths and give me a game plan :)
Thank you for sharing all of this information! I’m currently milking goats and looking at moving to a cow. Our last milk cow was in 1994 and I was a lot younger then lol but the extras can’t be matched (butter, sour cream, cottage cheese, etc) I’m milking 4 goats for 1 gallon a day but they’re my size. I’ve considered getting a miniature version but can’t find much info on the milk production.
I think if you take your time you can find a gentle milk cow and that won't feel as intimidating. Plus I think you will get back into the swing of things ... like riding a bike. We have a Dexter Bull (small bread) but he's new so no calves yet. Thank you for joining us here!
I’m getting ready to buy a milk cow. Been saving and preparing for a couple years. Seems Jersey Milk cows are overall the best. We just got a farm with a large barn 3 weeks ago. Trying to get barn cleaned and set up as well as find a cow.
Thank you for all the info! It's been so helpful! I just have a couple questions. I have a cow with a 2 month old calf and she definitely holds up her milk. My biggest fear is if I wean the calf, she will still withhold her milk from me and get mastitis or production go way down. How do you prevent this from happening when you wean? Will she realize she has no other choice and just start letting down for me? Also how do you transition calf from mom to bottle?
Once a calf is used to nursing, they often wont take a bottle. Sometimes you can get them to drink from a bucket. *usually* a cow should begin to let down after a couple days...we had a stubborn one who we ended up just buying another day old calf because she would not let down!! Calf sharing is not my favourite for that reason.
You said “grass has more neutrino on than hay”. Does that mean it is better to buy grass hay for winter? I thought I should buy grass/alfalfa mix hay for it to be more protein. I am trying to be sure I feed enough this winter. 👍 Thanks
Just wondering what your input is on feeding toddlers raw milk with or without supplementing formula? i do not own any dairy animals, and am yet to have a child, just very curious.

Loved this video - I would love similar videos on feeder pigs, meat birds, layers, and hamish’s bantams😍
I'll put it on my list!
I loved this. Have no intentions to buy a cow but still found it super informative
Thank you!!
I’m the same! I learn so much from Kate about how our food is produced, made, etc, and find it so fascinating.
Daaammm girl you know your stuff ,very good
Thank you so much Kate ❤
You are so welcome!

Great info. I was just talking to a friend and she was saying her (dairy farmer) husband would call it 'freshening' when she would go into labor. 😂😂
I even refer to my cycle in same way as we do the cows lol
I would love to nerd out to one of these videos about raising meat pigs 🐷
That would be fun!
Our neighbors have longhorn milking and Holsteins. We want high fat cows!
Could you please share a link where you get your animal rennit ,and other cheese making supplies ,,,thanks so much ,,,happy day

Sorry for not being clear, what I meant was fresh grass has more vitality. Definitely get some alfalfa mix hay.
So you can feed milk to chickens? We have laying hens and that would be awesome if I ever had extra milk from our girl! ☺️
Yes you can!
what a blessing

Our older three went from nursing to raw milk at just over a year old
