  • - don't you hate finding mistakes when you can't fix it? I said that gold toning makes the image nice and red to reddish-brown, but what I should have said is it makes it BROWN to reddish-brown. I also should have said "once you have worked your way through those nine TRAYS" not prints when talking about development.
Hello! Welcome to part four of my video series on early photography. This episode is about the start of paper photographs including carte de visites, cabinet cards, and stereo cards.
This series is a part of CoCoVid, an online conference host by the Costube community on TH-cam.
I am sorry that I have not edited the subtitles for grammar, I am very tired from doubling my video number in one weekend. I did edit so it at least knows what words I am saying.
Yesterday's video on cases: • Cases, Magic Lanterns ...
Friday's video on wet plate: • Daguerreotypes and Ear...
Check out Thursday's video on Daguerreotypes here: • Daguerreotypes and Ear...
and tune in Sunday for part four.

I'm taking a history of photography class and it's just so much less confusing and more interesting when you explained it.

I really hope you achieve your dream project. I am pretty confident that you will. One valuable take-away from this series is that I am no longer going to look at the bins of old photographs in our local antique/junk/thrift shops with sadness. Seeing photos that were once cherished in a dusty old sale bin reminded me too much of the idea of people being forgotten. It is great to observe the care, enjoyment, and respect that you clearly give not just to the process but to the people pictured.

My papa(grandpa) used to be a photographer, he has a whole bunch of his old camera equipment on display. Very cool video!

The depth in that photo... even sideways and on video the layers of the image were so clear, awesome

I’m late to the CoCoVid party, but I have to say how much I’ve enjoyed this series! I’m a history nerd, especially for the American Civil War, and a long standing photography fan. I’ve taken black and white film classes (I’ve even set up a home dark room) but they always glossed over early nonfilm photography. I will definitely be checking out some of your book recommendations. Again, great job on this series!!

Thanks, Victoria! Very helpful in understanding the whole process of the different photo methods and photography. I have dozens of Cabinet Cards and a bit less of the CDVs. It is quite amazing to see how so many have survived the 100+ years of existence. in very good condition. I scan many of my Cabinet Cards and CDVs, posting them on Instagram, Facebook, and Flickr. Always fun doing the research to find out when they were taken and by what studio/photographer. Many of mine are from the Michigan area, so it is easy to track the photographers and studios since there is an online database listing 8,000 early photographers from 1840 to 1920 that practiced in Michigan, many of them in the Detroit area. But the challenge so far has been not finding any Cabinet Cards west of St. Louis. I never have found any from states like California, Texas, Nevada, Washington State, or other areas out west. Anyway, I have not found many stereo cards in my area, so I concentrate on only Cabinet Cards and CDVs. Keep up the great work 👍

Sorry I just got around to viewing this video. I've been canning. Another great video. Thank you for taking the time to explain the differences in the types of Victorian photos. Before I saw your videos, I thought they were all pretty much the same. Oh how wrong I was!
