The Philosophy of Berlin School Synthesizer Music (also known as Space and Cosmic Rock)

  • Ralph Baumgartl is talking to the band "Thau" (Bernd-Miachel Land and Frank Tischer) about the philosophy and their understanding of the "Berlin School" musical heritage. "Berlin School of Electronic Music" is sometimes also referred to as "Space Rock" and "Cosmic Rock". It's a music genre that was created in the 1970's by german musicians such as Ash Ra Tempel, Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream.

    I'll also mention that the electronic music of the '70s, Berlin included, were some of the only styles of music ever created that had almost no older musical styles to draw from. The technology was so brand new that there were no existing styles, musical forms, or whatever, that could be applied to it. New styles had to be invented from the ground up. They were styles spontaneously brought into being by experimentation and the rapid changes in music technology. Rap, hip hop, punk, new wave, (English) ska, reggae, and the whole field of electronic dance music genres that followed all drew off older forms. But the early electronic pioneers didn't have that luxury. Rather than ask "why should we keep referencing old styles from bygone eras," I think the more appropriate question is "How can we possibly NOT reference these styles?" Try to invent a new style when you're using the same old tools and see how far you get. ];P

      +emdotambient Hello emdotambient, your comment clarifies some of the ongoing disputes and challenges among musicians to create some new kind of music. I totally agree with you that this is an almost impossible task when using traditional music instruments or new musical gear that was influenced by them. Your comment is so straight to the point that I would like to read it out in one of my forthcoming Vlogs. Kind regards, Ralph

      thank you very much for your supportive words. I personally don't consider it a defense, but rather a clarification. In the Q&A video (link beIow) I am mentioning a viewer comment, which clarifies the argument surrounding Berlin School Music in a concise and brilliant way.

    I think the Blues and Berlin are a good analogy. What is truly amazing is the fact that musical styles evolve and travel regardless of boarders and language.

      @RalphBaumgartl I would actually define Berlin as a Movement, quite similar to the Abstract Expressionist in Movemnt in the visual arts that took place in New York. Both were an effort to create art that was unique and independent of the classical era, which dominated the scene at the time. Both were the result of European artists looking to earn a living with a classical education in a contemporary period. Neither New York or Berlin were accepted by the status quo as " real" art or music at the time. Today, the music of TD is firmly embedded in the soundtracks of movies like Risky Business and considered to be virtually iconic.

    I used to play bass in an old-school Country/Western Swing band. Some of the songs we played were written in the 1930s! While we actually did play some gigs in a few museums (lol), we also played nightclubs, art galleries, private parties, farmer's markets, and even one time at a women's prison. It doesn't matter how far back the style goes. If you play what you love and play it well, people will listen.

    Berlin School music lives! I remember being in Germany in the early 80's when I was a kid and heard the electronic music of the time there and have always been inspired by that memory! You guys are awesome! I would love to see an episode on creating that style with limited resources. As much as I would like to, I don't have a room to devote to housing racks of vintage and non vintage synths, plus my wife would kill me.

No. Berlin School is a relevant term today more than ever, with its own unique combination of elements and style that is widely understood. Keep up the great work, live your music and these videos. Very informative! Respect and peace from Somerset, England :)

    Bernie was right. TD and their contemporaries were the godfathers of electronic music and provided the foundation for everything we hear today and it was very arrogant of that commenter to dismiss it. I first saw TD as a skinny youth here in the UK in 1973 and a number of times since. I was spellbound and it literally changed my musical tastes overnight. Thank you so much for keeping the spirit and the art alive and thanks for sharing your thoughts for we English speakers. Love the T shirt Bernie.

    "Wish I had beer"! That made me laugh!
    I remember that comment to the previous video, and thought it was daft. Thau make the music that they like to hear, I make delta blues that I like to hear, I know guys who play 1970s-style rock, and what's the problem? If we are currently making music whose genre had its heyday in the 1970s or 1930s, who cares?
    If the commenter wants to hear something completely new, he can find it on the Internet, or buy some gear and make it himself. Berni and Frank make lovely music that they shouldn't have to defend or justify. I like it and so do plenty of other people.

    saying berlin school is dead is like saying prog rock is dead (which i wish were true, but oh well). berlin school is the foundation of structured and original synth music. less experimental than others, more original than the moog elevator music of classical pieces. berlin school has a purity to it that i love.

    nice show...big happy german guys with big synths. :-) i think what the guy was asking though is he would like to hear you guys doing or having a go at something more modern sounding or different....with your talents and your synths / modules. not to change your style permanently, but just try it out and make one or two videos. who knows...the results could be interesting and fun and maybe everyone can learn something. thumbs up.

      Hello Chad, thanks a lot for watching and for sharing your feedback. I really appreciate it. These Vlogs are very spontaneous creations, thus I am using a simple hand held vlogging camera. Wiring everybody up with Lav Mics or making everybody hold a Mic would in our opinion spoil the spontaneity and the flow of the video. That’s why we are taking this quick and dirty approach with these Vlog style videos. Greetings, Ralph

      +Rafael Peña Hello Rafael, Bernie and Frank are both professional musicians. You are 19 years old, that’s great, so you just make music with the equipment that is at your disposal. Use whatever inspires you and what is affordable to you. Bernie is old enough to be your grandfather. Maybe your analogue synth cave will be much larger than Bernie’s when you are at his age ;-) Please also bear in mind that less equipment can also spark creativity. Just make music, please don’t be under the impression that you have to acquire a certain amount of equipment before you are ready to make music…you can just start with apps on a smart phone. Just make sure you get moving with whatever you have. Cheers Ralph

      Ralph Baumgartl VLog I've been making music since I was around 15 or 16, I started in 2011. I used to make very poor grades when I was in high school so coming home to my laptop and churning out music that made me happy on Fruity Loops was a really good way to spend my time and forget about the world around me. I still make music but for around a year or so my creativity has been on a steady downhill slump, things haven't really been the same since I got out of high school. I rarely make music anymore, and it's not because I don't want to, it's more so since I feel like I've completely forgotten how to. realmofyza.bandcamp.com/track/all-the-glitter-was-gold-in-my-eyes Here's something I made recently in case you're interested, it's not very Berlin School though, just very 80's :)

      Ralph Baumgartl VLog Part of it is the pressure I've created for myself. I had this music mentor over the internet a few years ago by the name of Keiji Yamagishi, he did the music for the video game Ninja Gaiden back in the 80's for the NES. I did some snooping and I found his Facebook and eventually he made a post on his profile that highlighted the details about his first album that he was in the process of making since the 80's. He was releasing it with this label that I hadn't heard of called Brave Wave, it looked like a rather small albeit professional label and I told myself, "I don't care what it takes, I'm going to release my album on that record label." If you look on my bandcamp, I upload the demo that I sent to the record label in an email (the King Cold demo) and sure enough, they contact me saying that they accept my demo and told me to send in 5 tracks of the new record. For months I was in my bedroom making tracks but they never felt good enough to me given the quality of the other releases on the record label, and since the initial email I still haven't sent the record label any music for the record, and I've already made 4 different versions of the same album. I've since had to talk to the head of the label again because an entire year had passed since they accept my demo and I wanted to make sure they were still on board with it. He got back to me saying that it was fine and to send in 5 tracks for evaluation, I did that in January and once again, I hardly have any tracks worth sending. I've manage to finish 2 though! The song that I initially sent you and this other one that I made in Bitwig Studio after I switched from FL Studio. You can find it here: clyp.it/snxpitdt Thanks for listening to me, any advice is certainly appreciated.

    • @RalphBaumgartl
      @RalphBaumgartl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Rafael Peña Hello Rafael,
      I have listened to both tracks. They are pretty cool and I like them both. Make sure you finish the other 3 tracks and send the package to the label guys asap.
      Here’s a brief bullet point list, which I hope makes you shift into gear.
      1. Always set yourself a deadline for shipment (releasing your work). Yes, I know you are scared that people might reject it, but you never find out if people like it until you actually ship your work.
      2. Delaying your work by a year does not really send a professional signal to the label guys, but what is actually worse, is what your are telling your subconscious: You do not follow through on the promises and commitments to yourself and others, and that makes you feel bad about yourself which results in even lesser drive and creativity. This applies to all people, including me. Once you break your commitments and promises, you begin to distrust yourself on a subconscious level.
      3. An ounce of DOING (making music and shipping your work) is worth a ton of theorising (pondering whether your music is good enough)
      This may sound a bit harsh, but I think you have talent and you should not waste time double guessing and doubting. Even if you fail and people reject your music, you can tell yourself that you have tried it. When people are on their deathbed they rarely regret the things they have done, more often they regret the things they have not tried and the chances they have not taken.
      Greetings Ralph

    Hey, Ralph, a question that you 9or Bernd-Miachel or Frank could answer...
    When playing Berlin School style, what, if anything, is keeping the players synchronized with each other, so that the lengthy arpeggios don't go out of sync with each other? Are all of their instruments synced to a MIDI clock? Or are they just that precise in their playing that it's not an issue? If they are synced in some way, how does that differ from back in the 70's, before MIDI? This might be a good one to demonstrate in a video. Thanks!

    • @RalphBaumgartl
      @RalphBaumgartl  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello John,
      there are many ways how to approach the syncing layout depending on the equipment that I am using. In many cases I have the Korg Electribe providing the Midi Clock to sync up vintage synths like my ARP 2600. The Arturia Keystep is acting as Midi/CV interface and as a controller in this scenario. In the case of using only pre Midi vintage equipment you have the option of using an LFO or a trigger signal as master clock. Check out this video, in which Bernie is using a vintage Roland Drum machine to provide the master trigger signal by which all the other gear is synced up:
      th-cam.com/video/3CuVtGjPJf0/w-d-xo.html
      Greetings, Ralph

    • @witherwillowsounds3935
      @witherwillowsounds3935 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Ralph, I was always wondering how this was done, pre-midi. So you basically have the Keystep as a master, with everything else slaved to it? What about when you play with someone? Are you both synced to the same thing?
      So, was Klaus Schulze using the LFO signal technique, back in the day?
      This sure would be a great video topic!

    • @RalphBaumgartl
      @RalphBaumgartl  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello John, I haven't yet tried the Keystep as the master. I shall test that one day. But please bear in mind that there is no standard way for syncing pre midi equipment. It always depends on the synthesizers/sequencers/drum machines and usually involves a lot of trial and error testing. But I guess that's part of the fun ;-) When two musicians are playing and controlling sequencers at the same time it makes sense that they are synced to the same master device. But that also depends on the type of music and the artistic goals they have in mind. Anything goes in art and music :-) Greetings, Ralph

    Ha! Blues from the '60s...its roots stretch back to the 19th century and it's still being drawn upon for inspiration, well over a century later (114 years ago the first known mention of the style). Berlin school came about, what, 44 years ago? It's a true infant as far as music styles go. Here's hoping Berlin School's influence goes on at least another 70 years! -- Cool song, too!

      +emdotambient Hello and thank you for your comment. You are absolutely right! Blues has a much longer history than just since the 1960s. I think Frank was just refering to the musical era of the 1960s when Blues also became a part of Pop Music. Thanks again for watching. Best regards, Ralph

      +Ralph Baumgartl VLog Yes, it was clear Frank was referring to the blues rock that started in the '60s. I've seen people moan about Berlin School being old and no longer valid on music forums (prog, too for that matter), but you never see the same about blues. I never got into blues even back in the '70s (well, maybe some early Tull, but even they had an early song in which Ian sang "Blues was my favorite colour until I found another song I felt like singing."). I only grew to appreciate it when I fell in love with '30s swing music.

      Hello Chris,
      actually my grand mother also contributed some money to that Korg Delta birthday present. I did not own that many synths back then. I "acquired" a Korg Delta, Oberheim OB1 and an ARP2600 between 1981 and 1983. But I was very fortunate that I had a supportive friend and music teacher who allowed me to use his Home Studio every now and then. During school vacation my dad drove me there, as he lived around 250 kilometers away from my home. In the following playlist you find some videos with photos that were taken in that home studio:
