    Hi Ian, another great video! I noticed at seven minutes and 18 seconds of your video that you mentioned always leaving the image stabilizer on, even when using a tripod. I have also noticed several times that the image stabilizer can be detrimental when the camera is on a tripod, especially during long exposures. I wanted to mention this because it might help those who are wondering about it. Let me know what you think about this, whether you agree or disagree. We're all here to learn. Thanks again, Ian.

      Fuji actually recommends leaving ibis on when using a tripod with the 70-300. i've done a video all about it which you can watch here where i compare different focal lengths with ibis. th-cam.com/video/c8fCXd8kjAo/w-d-xo.html

    I carry my 70-300mm with me on landscape shoots. I use it about 10 to15% of the time. When I don't have a composition with a wider lens, I pull this out and look for details. The problem with it is that it is heavy. It is an alpha mount lens and it needs an e mount adapter which makes it heavier, but it also has a tripod mount to help balance it. Along with it I carry a 16-35mm, a 50mm and a 30mm macro. I have a 15mm and 20mm gap in my range, but I can shoot wider and crop in these ranges.

    My kit usually has a 18-55,50,55-200,55-300,18-140mm. The 55-300 more so now but still keep the 55-200 in the bag as I find it handy in some cases or if the person I am with with the same brand is with me and they only have the 18-55 as I like bringing out those just starting out in photography so they can get those longer shots. If I could carry all the lenses for my camera I would as that it would give me more shooting options. Plus I like being prepared.

    I recently switched back to Fuji, and the 70-300 won out over the 50-140 due to size, cost, and reach. I was pleasantly surprised to see this lens is almost a macro as well. My first outing with it was to a zoo, and in the butterfly house I was able to more than fill the frame with the them and the flowers. I never expected to have such an amazing minimum focusing distance on such a long lens!

    Another great video, as usual. I picked up the 70-300 and was using the 50-140 much the same way you talk about. The added reach and reduced weight of the 70-300 means the 50-140 stays home a lot more. You might check out the iShoot tripod collar for better balance. It does not allow for vertical rotation of the lens, so you have to use the tripod head. But, it does allow better overall balance.

  • @catherinegrimes2308
    @catherinegrimes2308 ปีที่แล้ว

    iShoot make a tripod collar to the 70-300, it is the same one that they make for the 55-200.
    Would it be better to use a remotely controlled external intervalometer and have the camera on AE bracket mode? You could remotely control the picture taking at different exposures and you could also program it to take a sequence of bracketed images and you would have a large number of images to use. That would improve your chance of getting the perfect photograph. You wouldn't have to touch the camera either.

    Hi Ian, ex-pat here in Michigan and I have been watching and greatly enjoying your videos for a few months now. I am a Fujifilm shooter and have the 70-300 and heard you mention the lack of a tripod collar and I came across this on Amazon but I do not know whether it is available in the UK. " IShoot Lens Collar Tripod Mount Ring Compatible with Fujifilm XF 55-200mm & Fuji XF 70-300 with Arca-Swiss Fitted Quick Release Plate". Thanks for that video! I guess that you're shooting on full frame csmera, what it's called nowadays... In case you're alsoshooting on an APSC (I've seen that you're with Fuji)I'd recommend you trying the Tamron 18-300mm. I've got the lens recently for my Sony A6400 and it's pretty decent for being a so called super zoom. Ok, the aperture is variable from 3.5 to 6 something. But the reach of this beast is just phenomenal. With under 800g it's not too heavy either. Weather sealed also. IBIS. And there's an 11-20mm consdtant 2.8 too. I'm tempted to get that one too and would be safe for all situations when being on holidays. Of course shooting a prime is another thing and very nice. But there I can't compare Sony APSC with Fuji as my favourite primes from Zeiss (32mm Touit and 25mm Batis) are not available for Fuji as far as I know.
    What I realise when seeing your videos is that best sharpness, super high prime equipment is not key. Setting the immage well and considering the light together with your gear is much more important. Thanks for that lesson.

    Another great video Ian. I am using the 70-300 as well - really versatile for wildlife, sport, macro and landscape. Most of my landscapes with this lens tend to be at the shorter focal lengths though, 70-100mm. I have the iShoot collar which helps with balance, but can't be rotated due to the lens AF switch location, so for portrait you need the tripod head to rotate instead.

    Interesting vid, Ian. I've been using the 70-300 since it first came out, and it has become an essential part of my landscape and travel kits. I began using it with the X-S10, but it migrated seamlessly to my X-H2 last year. For landscapes, I've found it to be a powerful and versatile tool for isolating more intimate scenes among mountains, water falls, seascapes, cityscapes and the like across several continents and in all kinds of conditions. I don't do a lot of wildlife, but have been very happy with the results on subjects as diverse as whales, monkeys and birds, especially when combined with the 1.4x TC. I've also been very impressed with its macro capabilities. I had considered the 100-400 which is a bit longer and (possibly) a tad sharper, but it was too bulky and heavy for my shoots, which usually entail a lot of hiking. For landscapes and travel, I most commonly pair it with the 16-80, so I have no gaps in my focal range. I will usually then add the 10-24 (and/or a fast wide prime) to complete the set, depending on what I expect to encounter.

    • @TimvanderLeeuw
      @TimvanderLeeuw ปีที่แล้ว

      The 70-300mm is fantastic for the reach it offers, and the size and weight.
      I do now also have the 150-600mm for bird photography, it does offer a more substantial upgrade over the 70-300mm for that purpose than the 100-400mm does.

    • @ian_worth
      @ian_worth  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would be interested to test the 16-80. Potentially, that would be the only lens i would need for woodland photography. How dose that lens perform optically on the x-h2?

    • @warricksmith5178
      @warricksmith5178 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ian_worthI was very happy with it on the X-S10, and find it even sharper and cleaner on the X-H2. Indeed, Fuji have been packaging it a kit lens for the X-H2, even though it is not included on their list of lenses able to fully resolve 40mp. Some insist that it is not quite as sharp as the 16-55. Even if that is true, it’s certainly good enough for my landscape and travel work, particularly given the greater versatility in focal range and much smaller and lighter size. Definitely worth a try…

    Interesting. I'm a Canon shooter, but also with an APS-C body (although a consumer DSLR, not a pro like your Fuji). I recently sold my Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and bought a used (excellent condition) Canon EF 70-200m f/4L to replace it. Neither are new designs and neither are weather-sealed (although other sibling variants are). The 70-200 is better optically and mechanically as you'd expect from an L lens but the 70-300 isn't an 'entry level' lens and generally wasn't bad. However it softened past 200mm and I saw some flaring on high-contrast edges that I attributed to slightly cheaper coatings, possibly. The 70-200 focuses much faster and more silently, plus zoom and focus are internal so there's no rotation nor extension. Also the 70-200 has full-time manual focus. Although I gave up 100mm in reach (and stabilization), as a landscape shooter the vast majority of the time it's on a tripod. Will I miss that extra 100mm? Maybe, but if so, probably less than I'll miss the stabilization. I rarely shoot birds and 300mm (even on a crop sensor) is just barely on the short end of what's really needed for birds. That's one area where gear really does matter and I'm not ready to take that cost jump! 🙂 For me, dropping from 300mm to 200mm was the right move, but we all have different needs.

    • @ian_worth
      @ian_worth  ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree, 300 isn't really long enough for wildlife photography unless the subject is really close. it's been great for capturing video moments though, like the otters. 👍

I also use canon EF mount lenses with the fuji cameras as well especially the Tamron 18-400mm, Tamron 11-24 and Tamron 35-150mm with the Fringer adapter. I can see that te Fuji 50-140mm would be a future lense to get but for now I am happy playing with the lenses mentioned above. The Fuji 70-300mm is a great lens offering alot of flexibility I think

    Hi Ian- I have a Fujifilm X-T3 camera and started with the 18-55mm lens. I then purchased the 10-24mm and 55-200mm lenses and recently added the 16-80mm for landscape. I am keeping the 18-55mm for travel and documentary because of its fairly good optics and light weight. Based on your experience, how much "image quality" is improved with the 50-140mm vs. the 55-200mm? I'm strictly an amateur so budget and weight are my two criteria, but I have wondered how much optical quality am I'm missing out on not using the 16-55mm and 50-140mm? Your thoughts will be much appreciated. Cheers!

I ended up taking 10-24 and 18-55 and 35f1.4 on my XH2. But I definitely missed a long focal range for some of the scenery on my long hikes. How did you find it went handheld?
    A few of my shots with XH2 and 18-55 in particular ( handheld) had movement when I checked them on the PC on return from holiday, which quite surprised me. Image stabilisation on and I thought (?) I could handhold pretty well. Have you had any such outcomes using the XH2?

      I think its fair to say its a lot easier to handhold at slow shutter speeds when shooting wide angle frames. When zoomed in to say 70mm and over it becomes a little more hit and miss. I usually try to keep my shutter at least equal to or over my focal length when i'm using the telephoto lens handheld and take plenty of images.

    Always enjoy your videos. Now that you have had some time with the 70-300 I have a question. I have the Fuji X-H2 and 16-55 lens but will be going to Iceland in October and I'm torn between adding the 50-140 or the 70-300 and would be interested in which you would choose. Obviously the longer range and lower price of the 70-300 is tempting but will I miss the sharpness of the 50-140?

      Thanks, like i mentioned in the video, i'm happy to sacrifice a little sharpness for the extra reach. its just a case of sharpening the photos a little more in post. No big deal really. if it was me i would take the 70-300. Iceland will really suit that lens i think. 👍

    Is anyone using this lens handheld? Just wonder if the image stabilisation in the lens and in my camera (xt5) is good enough to create consistently sharp images handheld, especially at the long end of the lens.

      Yeah its fine handheld, just need to set the shutter speed faster the further you zoom in.

    What a coincidence, I am looking for a used 70-300mm at the moment! Really appreciate your video and it has convinced me that it is a good idea to get one.I have been missing some wildlife captures too. I do have the 55-200mm which is my main lens, love it but sometimes it doesn't have the reach. The 100-400 is just too bulky and costly...

    I am shocked the number of people that Overlook the simple lens Hood it cuts down on flare increases contrast albeit a minor amount it also protects the lens

    I would go as far to say that I can do landscape without a wide angle - but not without a Telephoto lens.
