Hammer shares his true feelings about former tag partner Ric Flair, who is currently training for his "final" match. Also, find out how Valentine feels about where Hulk Hogan is ranked.
Remember, Greg is still good friends and close with both Flair and Hogan. This interview simply sets the record straight as far as who deserves to be mentioned amongst the elite in professional wrestling.
Valentine headlined and sold-out more than 16x at Madison Square Garden. Years before Hogan beat Iron Sheik for the WWF Title, Greg was in the main events against former champion Bob Backlund as well as Jay Strongbow, Pedro Morales and others.
We also discuss Greg's infamous battles with Rowdy Roddy Piper, which he says are better than the dog caller match.

I thought Valentine was really boring when I was a kid, but when I got older I found myself coming to appreciate his in-ring work. He has a hard-hitting, realistic style similar to Bret Hart or Japanese wrestlers, and he's an excellent seller. If those are qualities you value, there's no doubt he's better at those things than Hogan or Flair.

Greg Valentine may be the classiest, most professional, pro wrestler ever. He cared so much - and still does - about the quality of his work and about his fellow performers.
I recall hating him as a heel the way I hated Madden's dirty Raiders as a young Chief's fan from New Jersey.
He is truly a treasure and fantastic to listen to. 😊

I was always a Greg Valentine fan. I think Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan were obviously the bigger names and bigger draws but I think the Hammer has a very good point. If you dissect a Greg Valentine match he may actually be a better worker. He had his set spots that he would always do like everyone does but he's right his matches were different but for me the difference is the psychology in the ring and the storytelling he's reknown for and he's right again when he says he doesn't get a lot of credit for. Everything Greg Valentine did meant something. He told a story. He could generate genuine heat.

I always have admired Greg. He doesn't pull any punches pardon the pun. And just tells it like it is. He's a grade A talent that i feel didn't get half as much recognition as he rightfully deserves. Often times people will say guys like him were to close to Ric Flair in terms of there persona/gimmick or move set. I beg to differ with all that. Greg was his own guy and had his own character. He's always been that way. Great interview and i'd glad guys like him call out people like Flair and Hogan. Because there are PLENTY of other talents that are right up there with them. That haven't gotten what they so rightfully deserve.

You were a much better worker 100 % . Before you mentioned your face drop it immediately came to mind as I always thought yours was superior to Ricks’ as his is often ridiculous looking . Since I was young (62 yrs old now ) I thought you were the most believable of all pro wrestlers . Lanny Poffo mentioned in a shoot interview that when he was a kid he knew that it wasn’t real except when it came to Johnny Valentine , he was real . Coincidentally I felt the same . When it came to Greg . “ This guy is real and quite scary ! , I wouldn’t want to be the guy in the ring with him .” Believability should be what really determines who the best is . So Greg should be on the Mount Rushmore of pro wrestlers .

I became a fan because of Hogan, but the cage match with Valentine and Tito Santana told me that I can never miss it.
Savage and Steamboat stole WM3, a year later Valentine wrestled them both in one night.

To me, Greg Valentine's biggest moment came in 1977 when he broke Wahoo McDaniel's leg. That made him the most hated wrestler in the US. With that act, he took the Most Hated Wrestler torch in the Mid-Atlantic with that act. The only other wrestler to do that before was The Masked Superstar when he burned The Mighty Igor's eye with a cigar. That put him up there with Flair, Valentine, and Blackjack Mulligan as a really hated heel.

Always remember Greg as a believable hard ass tough wrestler. Not sure he had the same pizazz as Flair or Hogan, but his wrestling was top notch. Hogan? He was a big deal, and his size sold him, but his wrestling was not great, people say Warrior couldn’t wrestle but I never figured Hogan could either, just the same small number of moves every time. However the bottom line he was one of the most successful and memorable ever, so cudos to him. Flair, great career, but I was never a big fan. He lived hard, lucky he his still around.

    • @MaximRecoil

"Hogan? He was a big deal, and his size sold him, but his wrestling was not great, people say Warrior couldn’t wrestle but I never figured Hogan could either, just the same small number of moves every time."
Watch some of Hogan's old matches in Japan. You'll think you're watching Mr. Perfect or Bret Hart. Of course Hogan could "wrestle;" any physically-fit person can "wrestle" when their "opponent" is cooperative, which is how it works in pro wrestling. Hogan used fewer wrestling moves in the West because that was part of his shtick, just like e.g., Mr. Perfect being a "technical wrestler" was part of his shtick.
Do you really think that any of the physically-fit pro wrestlers who had been in the business for years and years couldn't figure out how to do wrestling moves that can be learned in a few minutes? Those moves aren't exactly rocket science.
If the higher-ups in the promotion wanted a character to be a "technical wrestler" like Mr. Perfect, then that's what he would be. If they wanted a character to be a "brawler" like Hacksaw Jim Duggan then that's what he would be. It wasn't/isn't real wrestling. In real wrestling, the opponent doesn't cooperate with you, which makes it far more difficult to apply holds/moves.

I knew very little about Greg Valentine until I started listening to these interviews. He just seems like the most decent, down-to-earth guy. He gives his take on everything but doesn't seem bitter or like he holds grudges against anybody. He gives credit where credit is due and says good things about many of his co-workers throughout his long career. Just a guy who did his job well and enjoyed doing it. It's nice to see a wrestler who doesn't seem screwed-up at all.

I seen a card with Greg as a main event years back. I can't remember who he was wrestling(I'm 62 and have seen alot of matches) lol. But man this guy could dish out and also take the most brutal chops you could imagine. Brutal. Very believable. Every punch , chop , suplex etc was as real as it could be. Great worker. Great heel! Tough SOB. I love the Hammer Valentine. Been to a couple Flair matches too. Ric just had the "it facter" going on. Charisma out the ass. But hammer is right. You seen one Flair match , you've pretty much seen them all. I agree as a worker Hammer was a better worker. Flair just had that Charisma so much that you would be sucked right in.

And not the sexiest man on the planet , specially after his partying days caught up with him.... And he could party! My dad partied with him in Seattle back in - I can't remember - 80 give or take year er 2. Maybe even years B4? I want to go to a Greg convention, n ask him if he remembers my late father? I bet he does

I saw Greg Valentine and Bob Backlund wrestle to a 45-minute time-limit draw at the Capital Centre in 1984 (after Backlund lost the WWF title to the Iron Sheik but before he left the WWF). It was one of the best matches I ever saw. Those 2 guys are legends, much better workers than Flair and Hogan (who were still great in their own right).

Valentine's interviews are great! He has so much respect for other workers and for the business itself. He tells his truth and you can hear the conviction behind every word. He believes what he says, and what he does... When he was in "Rhythm & Blues" viewers could tell that he didn't believe in that character. But everything else that he has ever done was so convincing! Guys like Muraco, Tito, Valentine, and Morales made the IC belt so extremely prestigious. I remember that in the PWI rankings whoever wore the IC strap was immediately installed as the number 1 contender to the World Championship. I miss the days of being able to suspend our disbelief and just watch and enjoy.

Greg n Flair were a underrated tag team . They were loved in NC , SC , & VA. They had great matches against Gene n Ole Anderson. Greg could have been a solid heel NWA champion . His interview skills were solid .Not Flair level but good enough. His match with Piper helped draw that 83 starrcade just as much as Flair vs Race . His match against Kerry Von Erich for the Missouri title is on you tube .Great match

When I was little kid, my first match was Valentine vs Santana. I thought Valentine must be Hogan due to long blonde hair (I was really young). I couldn’t understand why Hogan was so popular as he was clearly a bad guy (Valentine). But boy I sure was disappointed when I eventually saw a Hogan match. Even as a dumb little kid, I could see a huge difference between Valentine and Hogan. Valentine looked so tough, and his punches looked so powerful, and I thought he was really fighting. Hogan was like a cartoon character, and his punches were such a joke.

If you think about it, it makes sense because WWF was geared more towards the younger audience so their wrestlers were more like comic book characters.

I've been watching some Hammer matches to refresh my memories (and go back farther than that, seeing some matches from before I started watching wrestling) and he's 100% right. He makes it look real, in a way I didn't fully appreciate as a kid/teenager back in the 80s, and even now when I know it's all predetermined and he's working with his opponents rather than against them, he makes it easy to suspend disbelief. He really deserved a run with the top belt, and it's unfortunate that flash and glam prevailed, both then and in the long run, over Valentinian realism.
