Sortie Duet at Notre Dame de Paris 2007

Apologies for the bad, shaky camera...but this was back in 2007 during my first visit to Paris, and my first time in the organ loft at Notre Dame. At the time I was very unsure, and was afraid of being told to "turn the camera off" but now I am aware that they allow such things up there. Anyway, two organists playing this improvisation are Olivier Latry, and Baptiste-Florian Marle-Ouvrard, who would later become titular organist at nearby Saint-Eustache.

I love the playful looks exchanged through the video. I love that final pause before the final chord where Latry looks away from the console as if to cheekily ask "should I play one last chord to really finish it off?"

These are the sorts of incidents one reads of in biographies. How wonderful it is for us to actually be able to see two renowned French organists sharing the bench for a sortie improvisation at one of the most significant organs in the world. And I doubt anyone in the nave was any the wiser as to what was transpiring in the loft above.
