A good, zippy barrel turn is easily one of my top favorite moves - I'm a sucker for quick spins. One of the many reasons I love dancing with Hussain Jaffery is his mutual appreciation for zippy turns. A barrel turn is one of Lindy Hop's many beautiful basic six count moves, so its capacity for variation is wide. Have some fun with it!

I'm back watching this again! and this time I have really appreciated Hussain's style, how you two work so well together! A lot of the time leads can be a bit flouncy or too much jazz hands... but Hussain has a real verve and energy and grounded-ness about his dancing style which was great to watch. (7 months later... and you'll appreciate that I am back out on the dancefloor at a few big social events, and going to lessons again, thanks again for the inspiration!)
we got the barrel turn man for the barrel turn video LOOL lets gooo
Hussain was obviously my first choice for this.
this is like taking a master class for a single move! thank you for sharing!
AH HUSSAIN! Awesome to see you in a video!
I had to take time to write a comment just because of this Lead Hussain. I think it's the first time I've seen someone make it so clear how to manage space. Im not saying he's the best ever (i dunno that); I'm saying he has quite the skill to SHOW that super well. He made it so so clear how to position himself and manage the travel of the follow, be present, and of course Laura was always there exactly where he expected she was going to be ;-)
Hussain is one of my favorites to dance with. A really fantastic lead. I'm happy you noticed ;)
I love the way you break this down into the minutiae. It's so helpful! Thank you!
That infomercial moment was amazing 😂 made me crack up!
Such a great video! I can't wait to put those barrels on the floor ❤
Yooooo this was amazing! Thank you for breaking it down Laura, I’ve always wondered
So cool. Thanks!
you make me so excited to dance again! :)
Thank you for solving the mystery, barrel turns are such a hassle if you don't know the details!
Amazing 🎉
I'm picking up there are open and closed tuck turns which are quite different ??? i.e. around the 8:30 mark...
Hi Laura! Amazing video and fun to watch. This got me thinking of another video of yours, the rotational rocksteps video. As a general rule for myself, whenever i'm trying to set a follower up for a triplestep turn I try to make that rockstep as rotational as it can be. that ended up being my own way of differentiating a step-step barrel turn from a triple-step barrel turn, with other stuff such as speed and arm connection being kind of a consequence of that. What are your thoughts on this?
HUSSSSSS
🕺💃
I'm tall leader. I'm afraid it will be uncomfortable for smaller follows.
