*pushes glasses up on bridge on nose with index finger, exhales tangibly, breathes sharply back in through nose with slight snoring sound in stereotypical nerd fashion*
Ok so the jacks in the middle of the panel look like an ethernet jack for getting onto those sweet, sweet $20/hour cruise ship internets.
I *think* the other ones are female BNC connectors, short for "Bayonet Neill-Concelman", the one on the let being 75 Ω and the one on right 50 Ω.
it's essentially a coax jack (like you'd see for cable TV at home), typically used for anything RF based - TV, radio, etc. They probably had those in the room so if you brought your own TV / radio, you could hook it up to the ships feed, or their own in-room TVs ran off it. BNC is normally used in "rougher" environments, where stuff will get knocked around / wet / beat up, as they're super resilient and twist-lock, and easy to plug and unplug.
Also, I could be totally wrong, but that's what it looks like to me! :)

The ones below look like the normal radio/TV connections that are used in Europe (known officially as IEC 169-2 or Belling-Lee connectors). The one on the right looks a bit misshapen but I guess that can happen in a place like a boat where lots of people use it. They are RF connectors, but they are more for "everyday" use than BNC which is more for "professional" stuff, or that's my impression of the difference between them.

Granted the time before it was like -2 and snowing, and there was a strike with the bus/tram drivers. So the city was really silent. .

Sorry about the icy ground, that's how winters in Southern Finland always are 🥲 Be sure to bring some spike shoes next time!

Did you see that there actually was a baby in the stroller? I think it would be extremely rare nowadays to leave your baby unattended in the city center, people do that only in their own yards or balconies. Sometimes in central Helsinki you just can't get the stroller inside a restaurant or shop.

As a kid, these large ferries operating between Finland and Sweden were often the highlight of my summer vacation :) Two nights onboard, a day or more in Stockholm. Cousins in Sweden took the same trip to Finland. The ferry shown in the video has a lot of activities on 13 decks. P:S For us locals this kind of wet icy winter weather is the worst, good you enjoyed it :D

I understand that Helsinki is the capital. Stockholm Turku ferry route is just so much more enjoyable especially in summer when you can really appreciate the surrounding archipelago. These days the ferries that operate between Stockholm and Turku are also newer and fancier. Turku is also the old capital of Finland. It is much older than Helsinki and there is so much history there to experience. It takes less than 1,5 hours by train from Turku to Helsinki and the trains run frequently. I am not from Turku but I have lived there previously almost 20 years.

      @Jansk1h 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Sadly a lot of the really old stuff has been destoryed by fires, but there's still plenty of cool old things there to experience.

  • @mikkolukas
    @mikkolukas 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

Thank you for a beautiful video 🙂
Here is the next chapter of insider info (as I have traveled that route a lot of times):
0:50 and 4:05 Silja Line B-class is standard cabin with no window. Good for the price. E-class are cheaper but can be placed in noisy environments (near the engines or the night club). A-class comes with view to either the sea og the pedestrian street inside the ship.
0:53 The ferry actually goes North East at first, heading towards Mariehams at the Åland Islands. It stays within the Swedish archipelago all the way until it reaches the open stretch of water just before Mariehamn. In the middle of the night the ferry make a short stop at Mariehamn (pop. ~10,000) for tax reasons (and it also benefits the connectivity for the Åland Islands).
1:30 The buffet is expensive, but the quality is also high. Can recommend if one have the money to spend.
    2:44 Correct pronunciated.
6:25 Pro tip: If you order on the Swedish or Finnish website you will save about 18€. the price of the buffet would be the same though.
7:08 Because of the darkness you miss the absolutely incredible view while sailing through the Swedish archipelago, which the ferry does for the first 4-or-so hours. Some places sailing so close to the shore that one wonders how it is not hitting the cliffs.
7:23 Technically yes. You are in the Baltic Sea, but you are still good within the archipelago.
7:56 The red light are the gate to the loading ramp to one of the many many small yellow ferries, connection the road netword between the islands in the archipelago. In the summer one see those cross in front and behind the cruise ferry.
9:44 Year, it ferry is used as a party boat in the weekends. Usually there isn't much noise in the hallways, but I guess you have been unlucky about your location on the ship. Be glad you didn't choose the E-cabins though 😉
10:10 If to nitpick: This is the actual Baltic Sea. You are following the Southern coast of Finland, Eastbound.
    12:17 The Russian Orthodox church
12:23 Heated pool. Not hot spring unfortunately
12:37 They *DO* love their saunas! (The Finnish National Anthem playing in the background, for those who don't know)
15:29 Yes. Can confirm. It is a completely normal thing in the Nordics. We are actually puzzled, how people in the US can live with having such an unsafe environment where one cannot do that. Puts things in perspective.
16:57 The humidity in Finland is unusual. Normally in winter the air is more dry and one doesn't feel the cold as much. Denmark have a high humidity most of the time and normally +1°C (34°F) in Denmark can feel more cold than -10°C (14°F) in Finland.
19:05 Yes. The Finnish mentality and atmosphere is very much its own thing.
19:14 It *IS* East meets West, mixed with the unique flavor the Finns have themselves. Finland have been occupied by both Sweden (West) and Russia (East) and both countries have left their mark on the country. Finland kept the best of both.
Ps. Every morning in the summer there is a food market at the water front. The opening hours are more limited in the winter and there are no fresh berries and mushrooms.
Keep the bright side up, you are awesome 🙂

I grew up travelling on these ferries/cruising ships every summer. Now I live in the middle of the Baltic sea on the Aland Islands. For many these ferries are part of their life. People from the main lands go on cruises shopping tax free and enjoying themselves. For islanders they are a necessity.

I’ve heard another reason for doing this (also in other European countries) when it is cold, that they would need to unwrap the babies if they take them inside (it would be too hot for them not to). This matters in particular if the baby is sleeping as the unwrapping would wake them up.

5:25 bottom ones are Belling-Lee radio and tv antenna plugs, used in Europe and Australia, the rest of the world uses F type plugs, we do too on satellite dishes/receivers and cable internet. They either connect to an aerial antenna or cable provider. They use the same connector but they are switched male/female, you can use the same cable to connect a tv or radio, you just need to flip it.
The middle looks like rj45/Ethernet plugs, but could be rj11 landline, can't tell and of course the top is schuko.

Seeing the beaty in such dreadful weather is a great quality to have. Wet and icy is generally not that great, and feels a lot colder than dry and cold.

15:35 yep can confirm. sometimes it's for practical reasons cos many cafes and shops wont have enough room for big strollers, so people will just bring the baby inside and leave the stroller or carriage outside. but if the baby is sleeping when you get there, most will let them sleep and just leave a monitor outside so they know if the baby wakes up and starts crying and go bring them inside.

I need to get from Stockholm to Helsinki for a tour in a few months, and I was just going to book a flight but I am thinking of booking this. Even with higher cabin level, I think we still come out ahead vs 2x~$130 for the flight plus an extra night's hotel in Stockholm pre-flight. I know food is extra on the ferry but we'd still be buying it regardless of where we were staying. And this seems a bit more scenic and entertaining than sitting in airports!

A travel trip for sea sickness.. try and stand or sit in fresh air with a view of the horizon for a while, I find a window in a cabin is the key to avoiding sea sickness..good luck on the trans Atlantic trip try and get that window 😊

About children sleeping outside... They are dressed warm, so its the air they breathe. They sleep better and it also give them immunity. During the warmer seasons, same thing, but less clothes.

I mean there are like handful of baby snatchers in the nordic countries combined. They can't carry more than 4 at a time, so likely your baby is safe outside.

The air outside isn't really challenging for the immune system. But cool air is easier to breathe and babies seem to sleep better outside. Of course it requires that the neighborhood isn't too noisy. People know, mostly anyhow, how to dress for the weather and also babies so coldness itself isn't as problematic as going indoors and having to undress the baby. Babies aren't as good at sweating and controlling their temperature as adults are.

In Finland we sometimes get warnings like "walkways are dangerous, take care" alongside the weather report. Here you see why... so slippery! Most slippery areas get rough sand thrown on them by machines designed for it, and in spring it's all collected, washed (because of oil leaks and such) and reused the next year, at least in my city. It makes the spring air dusty for a bit if it gets windy, but reusing the same sand lessens the amount of dust in it. Sprained legs and even broken hips still happen though.

As kids in England we used to wear Dad’s old wool socks over our shoes to stop us from slipping on ice. Might be worthwhile giving it a go 🤷🏼‍♀️

It was much warmer day than the previous weeks. That melted tons of snow, and that's why it was so foggy.
