Lets be fair. Messi did really well in la liga winning the double and becoming the top scorer but he couldn’t perform in Ucl and was terrible in WC. On the other hand modric had poor League performance but was good in ucl and brilliant in WC. So it was pretty hard to decide who was the best but at the end modric won through voting. Many players shown almost equivalent level of performnaces this season in various tournament. They were poor in one tournament while brilliant in another. Hence, determining the best this season in my opinion was hard. And i am fine with modric winning as even messi and ronaldo both voted for him.

You might say that Modric almost won the WC with an underdog team. But, you have to to remember that he missed an almost game winning penalty, and no doubt would have won if not for Subasic's heroics. PS. Croatia low-key only faced Denmark, Russia, and England before losing to france.
Then what I dont get is how de bryune didnt win the best player award... his team beat Brasil (against the bookmakers) and almost pulled off another minor upset before a lack of concentration from a defender cost them a 1-0 loss against France.
