I applied for the Technical student position and gave the SONRU interview before the deadline of 5th April 2022. It is a month now, and I am about to complete my MSc but just because it's CERN I am still waiting for a reply. Can you give an idea, when can I expect a result from them? Or as it is already a month so I can guess that no teams are interested on my profile? Thanks for the video again.
Well, I did get my first email for an interview within 1 month, but I was not selected for that and I got my second email about 2 months from my SONRU email so maybe there is still hope... That's all I can say, sorry 😥 but you shouldn't feel dejected. It really is very competitive and there are a very few spots. I think luck is also a big factor.
Hello Mr. Anish, today i appeared in on-demand video interview. There were 5 questions and 2 minutes were for everyone questions recording. I was bit hastitate because the time was limited and i was thinking different aspects of projects i worked on. Now im worried about results.
Even during my experience I felt that time was limited, that's a normal feeling, but yes the technical student program is very competitive, but either ways good luck 👍
Hello there! Seems like you have recently taken the video interview, can you please share the questions you have been asked? Since I am also afraid I might make things worse as there is such limited time to answer each question. Any help is much appreciated.
a motivation letter is a very personal thing, you need to write what "motivates" you, i cant guide you in that. read some sample motivation letters online and you'll get some idea.
Anything can happen now. either you will be directly selected and will get selection email, or some team can even invite you for an interview and it's also possible no team contacts you and you are not selected. There is no fixed procedure after this, sorry, I understand maybe that's not what you wanted to hear. Best of luck 👍
Hey, I got the video interview call for the technical student program. Can you please tell me on what basis they will select the student after giving the interview. Can you give me some tips for the interview too
Hey Utkarsh! I have answered this question several times in other comments as well, so do go through them as well. In the video interview it will be a computer that asks questions and not a real person. The questions will be very generic like Why do you want to work at CERN ? What motivates you ? What kind of problems have you solved ? your most difficult challenge you have solved ? Good luck 👍
Hi I am going to apply for short term internship at CERN and in the application form they don't ask for transcripts and reference letters but they do have a field of additional document where they only ask for resume. So what should I do about reference letters
I have already answered this question in probably this video or maybe the Technical Student FAQs video. Sonru asks very basic fundamental questions like what would be your ideal workplace environment? what kind of people would you like to work with? what are your strength? weaknesses? describe a project you worked on? etc. questions like these
Hey bro. I have an interview with Sonru and I am really nervous as my spoken English skills aren't that good. Can you please guide me that fluent English skills matters a lot ? And please can you briefly explained what will they ask in that pre-recorded q/a interview ?
Well its okay if your English is not the best, as long as you can clearly communicate what you are trying to say. Many people at CERN don't have English as your first Language. as for the type of questions, they are very generic. they ask generic questions like why do you want to work here? where did you ear about CERN? your perfect work environment? etc ...
I don't know about all Indians, but I'm not. As for rehearsal, yes you can do that on SONRU and as for the final recording, you can't modify/delete it. Once done, it will be final.
Hi, do you think exam grades are very important? I'm in my third year of electronic engineering (first year out of course) and I would really like to apply for an internship as a technical student at CERN but I'm afraid that because of my path it will be limited. I've had some family problems and I've had to work, all of which is slowing down my degree. I would like to use the internship at CERN as a three-year degree thesis, do you think it's possible? I thank you
I don't think that exam grades matter a lot. My CGPA was 8.1/8.2 when I applied to CERN, nothing stellar. So, I don't think grades matter a lot. If you are selected then yes you can do coursework/thesis while you're at CERN.
@@AnishLearnsToCode Thank you very much for your answer. Another question please, as I told you on june I'll finish to follow courses at university. I should graduate in 1 year and I have to do an internship and my degree thesis (I hope from September onwards), I also have some exams to take. I would like to apply for a 6-month internship at Cern (electronic engineering), do you think it would be useless to try?

Anyone can write a lor for you. It can be professor, assistant prof, lab professor. If you have done any past internship, or job you can also get a lor from them. so you can also hve 1 university lor + 1 past internship supervisor lor.
I want to know that ... In the section of benefits they mentioned travel expenses and stipend...but someone told me that in the first month we will not recieve stipend and 2nd thing is when we will recieve travel expenses or visa as well
Hey Tanzeel ! You will receive your stipend every month. You will be paid for every month that you are employed there :D as for the travel expenses you will get reimbursed once you have arrived at CERN and it should take only a couple of weeks to get reimbursed. If you have been selected you will receive details on how to apply for visa and you will have to apply for visa yourself, but there is no visa fees when you're applying for a CERN Visa as CERN is an international and diplomatic organisation and there is no visa fees for CERN, UN etc.
Well, you can only add what you actually know 😉. I think that adding a long list of programming languages isn't very helpful. It is much better to know a few languages very well and knowing the basics like OOPs, DSA etc. much more than just a long list of languages on your resume.
Well you have to start somewhere. Just apply for several internships, in India as well as abroad and try and get something for the summer. This will slowly add to your experience.

I have no idea what kind of experience they are looking for, but I'm sure that all experience must count. Also it's not CERN that is hiring you but the several departments inside CERN that are interviewing and hiring. Every department looks for something different so there is no 1 right experience or profile.

Everything is super interesting thank you for sharing! My question is, is it a stimulating environment for young people? How's Geneva? I mean, is it just work or the quality of life is good and enjoyable? Thank you again ✨
Geneva or Switzerland in general isnt a very young place. All shops and markets close at 6:30 or 7 sharp. Even the airport closes around 10:30-11ish at night so its very much like a village in a sense and not a very hip hop party place. Me, I am bit of an introvert so honestly I don't mind the calm, but having said that, there are many young people working at CERN and also from the UN. The town of Saint Genis Pouilly is basically a CERN town and there are plenty of activities happening all the time. As for the work life balance, IMO its pretty great, but I am more from a CS background, and I have heard about physicists an scientists pulling an all nighter as well. But overall, I think its a very good balance and yes it is enjoyable 🙂
Hi ! Anish my application just moved forward.. and i have been invited for web interview can you give me some guidance about that on that what kind of questions should i prepare?
Your videos are helping me a lot:D Can you please give me some suggestions like what kind of skills / courses / internships should i take for next 1/2years to increase the chances to get selected!? ( Note : Im a first year student of physics from Bangladesh. Also I dont have any Olympiad Background Or any national awards💔)
well, first things first if you're from Bangladesh. I'm sorry but you can't apply for the technical student or fellowship program, as only people from member states or associate member states can apply. having said that you can apply for short term internship program, summer internship and CERN openlab. As for skills, i highly recommend becoming proficient in a modern programming language like Java/C#/Python/C++ etc. I would highly recommend Java (just a personal preference). Focus on core cs; data structures, algorithms etc. and make your fundamentals strong. Any internship that you can find will be good. also there's not just one path that leads to CERN, everyone can have a different skill set and abilities, what worked for me doesn't have to work for you. And even if you dont get into CERN. if your fundamentals are strong you'll get into somewhere. Hope that helps :)
@@AnishLearnsToCode I've another question to ask.. You've said that you applied for almost 200 internships.. Well, didn’t they all asked for particular recommendation letters!? How did you manage these almost (2x200) letters from your Professors!?🙂 [ im also planning to apply for internship at different Universities/ institutions.! But managing huge number of recommendation letters is discouraging me...!)
If we applied for a year can we reduce it into 6 months ..how to do that .. and can we leave internship in the mid if we are not getting comfortable with the environment ?
If you have been selected for the Tech student internship, you can talk to your supervisor about reducing the time frame. Also when it comes to leaving a job that you don't like, be it any job on the planet, you can do that. No one can force anyone to work (at least not anymore 😉) so you can resign whenever you like. I actually resigned from Fellowship program from CERN. I have an entire video about leaving CERN.
Hello sir , I'm applying for cern ,Can you please guide me to apply for it ,like what kind of resume we have to prepare and what are the things we have to mention in it.
You can see sample resume examples on Google. A good resume will be good for CERN as well. And then you will need a couple of LoR's and also a statement of purpose (SOP). Imo SOP and resume is most important.
What were your grades like when applying? I have to retake some of my classes so I am wondering how big of a chance I have of getting accepted to a technical internship.
Thank you so much sir for this link, as I got confused due to deadlines of multiple programme but I want to apply for short term Internship programme and its deadline is until October 2022.
I received my automated video interview email on the 9th February 2018 I received my first interview email from a department on the 16th May 2018 I received the second email from the supervisor that would finally hire me on the 14th June 2018
Hello all, I had a couple of questions about this opportunity. I am a 2023 graduate Engineering student. Will I be able to apply for it just after graduation? Also do we have to present the college permission letter before or after if we get selected. If anyone could help me with this, it's highly appreciated. Thank you
If you're graduating you probably can't apply and you have to submit the university approval letter after being selected. You can take a look at the origin program (which was previously called the Junior Fellowship program). that is for recent grads
Dear Anish, i applied for CERN Studentship 2023 and i’ve got an invite for video interview. Can you walk me through this process and any suggestions if you’ve gone through the video interview?
This is the computer video interview I'm assuming. In my time it was taken by SONRU, so search for SONRU in the comments and you'll find many answers already. They ask generic non technical questions like what motivates you? most difficult project ever worked on etc. and all the questions are timed so like 90-120 seconds and there is no real person on the other end, the questions just flash on the computer screen
What kind of prospects would a BSc Computer Science & Mathematics student hope for considering I have a first average in my first year. I’d be interested in both the technical and administrative programmes, I have a aptitude in physics, mathematics and computing. Generally consider myself an aspiring scientist with a hint of imposter syndrome 😂. I am looking for some advice. I have my second year of my degree still to go before my placement year and thus I’m the stage of searching for possibilities. How early should I apply if I were to start next year? Is this even feasible? Would I need to learn another language? What is living in Geneva like, is it expensive, does the cern allowance of ≈ 3319 Swiss Franc cover living and accommodation?
Hey Man ! You have asked a lot of questions. yes the stipend that CERN gives to Technical and admin students is more than enough to live very well in the region and also save some money. Yes, you can apply for the Tech and admin student program as a B. Sc student, but I think that the Tech student will be better suited than the admin student program. As for the selection, I can't say who will and won't be selected. You will just have to apply and see. CERN has 2 official languages, i.e. English and French so if you know any one of these, you are fine. You don't need to learn French to work at CERN, but if you know some french that's definitely a plus. You can see application dates/deadlines on cern careers website.
They don't know what are the different tiers of colleges in India, only Indians know the different tiers and almost all the Indians I have met at CERN have been from tier 3 and 4 colleges. I myself and also not from any IIT 😉
@@AnishLearnsToCode no complex data structure questions then I suppose? and what about the interview for fellowship position? what was the level of questions?

@@AnishLearnsToCode are all the expenses manageable with that stipend? If not can you please tell me how much extra do I have to spend to live there for a month? By the way thanks so much for reply❤️
@@AnishLearnsToCode I have one more question 😅. Does it require to submit of extra courses that I have done along with CV? I'm asking that there are some online free courses which I'm looking forward to do but I won't get certificate after completion.
You can add all the courses that you have taken on your CV, including but not limited to: 1. University courses 2. MOOCS (from Coursera, Udemy etc.) 3. Other courses but having a certificate to actually prove that you have taken them would be nice otherwise it will just be a long list of corses that you are claiming to have done without any proof. Having said that, having a long list of courses on your resume isn't the best. Your CV should be more focussed with just a list of the most important courses you have taken. and then it can also contain projects, past internships, experiences etc. Just courses isn't pretty great.

That's all I can say, sorry 😥 but you shouldn't feel dejected. It really is very competitive and there are a very few spots. I think luck is also a big factor.
Thanks for the reply. Let's see, and thanks again for this video.
Hello Mr. Anish, today i appeared in on-demand video interview. There were 5 questions and 2 minutes were for everyone questions recording. I was bit hastitate because the time was limited and i was thinking different aspects of projects i worked on. Now im worried about results.
What was your experience of video interview??
Even during my experience I felt that time was limited, that's a normal feeling, but yes the technical student program is very competitive, but either ways good luck 👍
Hello there!
Seems like you have recently taken the video interview, can you please share the questions you have been asked?
Since I am also afraid I might make things worse as there is such limited time to answer each question. Any help is much appreciated.
Sir can you please help me to complete my letter motivation by giving some key points how to start and explain my motivation and how to end
a motivation letter is a very personal thing, you need to write what "motivates" you, i cant guide you in that. read some sample motivation letters online and you'll get some idea.
I am commeting here after giving the online demo interview. Sir please tell me what will happen after this process.?
Anything can happen now. either you will be directly selected and will get selection email, or some team can even invite you for an interview and it's also possible no team contacts you and you are not selected.
There is no fixed procedure after this, sorry, I understand maybe that's not what you wanted to hear.
Best of luck 👍
@@AnishLearnsToCode thanks for reply. Waiting with fingercrossed🇮🇳🤞🏻
Hey,
I got the video interview call for the technical student program.
Good luck 👍
Bro can i have ur insta id?
In academic transcript I have to submit all my dmc of semesters or dmc of semester I recently completed
I think all would be better.
@@AnishLearnsToCode what did you do you send all sem transcript
@@crushermanager194 yes I gave all semesters
Hi I am going to apply for short term internship at CERN and in the application form they don't ask for transcripts and reference letters but they do have a field of additional document where they only ask for resume. So what should I do about reference letters
If you have reference letters you can provide them, but if it isn't required then there is no need to provide a reference letter.
What questions asked in sonru interviews.
Many people at CERN don't have English as your first Language. as for the type of questions, they are very generic. they ask generic questions like why do you want to work here? where did you ear about CERN? your perfect work environment? etc ...
@@AnishLearnsToCode Thank you so much :)
Indians are so genius..!!
Bro which type of questions asked in Sonru and can we delete recording or do rehearsal of recording video in Sonru?
No, I don't think it's useless. You can apply for Tech student, but you can also apply for Early career GRAD program.
Thank you again! Can I apply for both? But I have to take into account that I will have to give still exams to reach the final bachelor degree .... @@AnishLearnsToCode
I will also try without a reference letter... hope it won't be a problem. But do you think it will be also possible to have time to give my exams to reach the final degree of my bachelor on electronics engineering in Italy? Thank you@@AnishLearnsToCode
Sir ,Do you know any Indian student to get internship in summer internship program or short term internship program?
Nope, sorry.
Please let me reference letter from university professor is mandatory or university assistant professir also issue reference letter ?
Sir can you tell me what are the skills we need to add in the resume ??
Well, you can only add what you actually know 😉. I think that adding a long list of programming languages isn't very helpful. It is much better to know a few languages very well and knowing the basics like OOPs, DSA etc. much more than just a long list of languages on your resume.
@@AnishLearnsToCode well i don't have any experiences what should i do ?
Well you have to start somewhere. Just apply for several internships, in India as well as abroad and try and get something for the summer. This will slowly add to your experience.
Hey I have applied for it and got a link for interview in sonru can u guide me more about interview in sonru.

Hello Sir?
Hey bro.. am going to apply for technical studentship.. I have two Reference letters from university professors.. but am unable to produce letters from previous employer... is it mandatory to attach letter from employer as well??
nope
Okay that's great I have done my bachelors computer science and got video interview invitation. Im not a programmer, after graduation i have worked in GOvt departments and used specific tools that are only used in GOvt for E -filing.
Now please guide me would they prefer a candidate having such experience for early career professional program???

This is a question i have answered several times in the comments. Just search for Sonru on this page and you'll see several answers. Good luck 👍

I didn't use any template. I made mine in Photoshop. You can create yours in word or google docs or even latex (overleaf)
What did they asked in second interview from FAP..?
They asked basic html, js web dev questions.
Okk
Your videos are helping me a lot:D
Can you please give me some suggestions like what kind of skills / courses / internships should i take for next 1/2years to increase the chances to get selected!?
@@AnishLearnsToCode Thank you for your guidelines💓💓
@@AnishLearnsToCode I've another question to ask.. You've said that you applied for almost 200 internships..

Nope.
Can an electrical engineering student apply for OpenLab internship?
Yes, of course !!

we don't get stipend or travel expenses in advance and have to manage everything ourselves in the first month.
@@AnishLearnsToCode thank you mate.

I dont know how strongly grades affects this, but mine weren't so amazing at the time of application. They were like 7.9-8.00. something like this.
Hi, can you please tell what is the deadline? As I hear that the deadline is until October 2022.

Yes, if chosen you can adjust the start date.
Hello all,
I had a couple of questions about this opportunity.
I am a 2023 graduate Engineering student. Will I be able to apply for it just after graduation?
Also do we have to present the college permission letter before or after if we get selected.
If anyone could help me with this, it's highly appreciated.

If you're graduating you probably can't apply and you have to submit the university approval letter after being selected. You can take a look at the origin program (which was previously called the Junior Fellowship program). that is for recent grads
Any projects you did before applying to show in your resume? If yes what were they?
I had made a website for university at that time, no other project.

@@AnishLearnsToCode I have one more question 😅. Does it require to submit of extra courses that I have done along with CV? I'm asking that there are some online free courses which I'm looking forward to do but I won't get certificate after completion.
I will try and make a video on that soon, many people are asking that. TLDR: the expenses are totally manageable with the stipend that CERN pays.
You can add all the courses that you have taken on your CV, including but not limited to:
1. University courses
2. MOOCS (from Coursera, Udemy etc.)
3. Other courses
but having a certificate to actually prove that you have taken them would be nice otherwise it will just be a long list of corses that you are claiming to have done without any proof.
Having said that, having a long list of courses on your resume isn't the best. Your CV should be more focussed with just a list of the most important courses you have taken. and then it can also contain projects, past internships, experiences etc.
Just courses isn't pretty great.
