I feel like that's why Jerry is so hated compared to all of the other characters, despite other characters being arguably just as bad as people. I think what bothers me most about Jerry was when he tries to help Morty with his science project, but he only does it for his own ego not because he wants to see his son do well in his science project, at the end we see that's true since he publicly embarrassed him on pluto in front of aliens praising him instead of defending & listening to his own son. He doesn't care who he hurts as long as it benefits him. A good father would want the best for his child and in no way does he try to contribute to the family or his kids. At least the other fatherly figures in other shows kind of contribute by providing for their family by working, Jerry does nothing.

It's Beth was taken away from a previous version of him. The other bats only get with Jerry's because Rick's need a Morty especially if there are part of the citadel. The citadel that c137 Rick Sanchez started. Going to the same process that he taught them to do. And it's even reviewed in a later episode that they are literally Dustin to come together just to make Morty all because of Rick. They literally needs an end up hooking and high school because of Rick. He put some sort of chemical in Beth to be interested in Jerry just to get a Morty. The very last thing that he's complaining about emblem injury for is his own goddamn fault.

He really does get more likeable as the show goes on. He makes mistakes, but he also apologizes and admits when he's wrong. He really loves his family and Beth, even though his pettiness sometimes gets in the way of that.
Jerry's the true anti-Rick of the series. It's easy for us to hate him because Rick hates him, and Jerry's flaws are so much more human and less glamorous than Rick's. I have trouble disliking Jerry now when I rewatch the old episodes because he's really just a silly dude trying his best.

Y’know, it really sucks how much Jerry became such a bad character during season 3, because, to be honest. I actually thought he was a better parent than Beth in the first two seasons. Not great, but better than her, and that’s because of one simple reason. He cared about his kids. Beth would constantly let her 14-year-old go on life threatening adventures with her father that always left him traumatized just so she could have a relationship with her deadbeat father again. The finale of season 2 especially shows this. The Smith’s are stuck on a planet that’s way to small to realistically live on and the only way out of there is for them to turn Rick in for all the crimes he’s committed. Jerry, wants to do so, but Beth won’t let him, because she still wants to have a relationship with Rick! I understand her wanting to reconnect with her dad after years, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of her kids’ lives! Jerry even points this out to her and she yells and starts crying, saying that she doesn’t want Rick to leave her again! What makes it worse is that Morty and Summer take HER side! Why!? I understand that they care about Rick, but Jerry has a serious point that ever since Rick moved in, they’ve only gotten into trouble and nearly died multiple times! And, Rick chose to do all the crimes he committed! THEY shouldn’t have to deal with the consequences of HIS actions! Like, seriously is there something about that episode that I’m forgetting that would explain how Beth is the one in the right!? That’s a genuine question. Please tell me. So, yeah, that’s my two cents.

I don’t think it’s Beth not caring about her children, but rather giving them freedom and trusting her father that they are safe. I believe Beth just thinks that it can be a good experience for the kids and that they learn stuff when going out with Rick.
So for Beth’s pov at the start its: „well they don’t necessarily always like it, but it helps them just as school does“ until the kids like it themselves which then turns it into „learning and having a good time with their grandpa“

Jerry at this point is one of the only normal people left in the smiths, while everyone treats him like garbage. At this point, even less

In the post-credits scene, Jerry ends up driving an invisible garbage truck. He's really proficient with it even though he's never driven a garbage truck before and, you know, it's invisible. Makes you wonder why Jerry doesn't get a job as a garbage truck driver.

In season 6 episode 8 "Analyze Piss", I think we really were able to get a sense of how protective he is over his family. This Piss guy was harassing the family and sexualizing Summer, and since Rick was told by his therapist to not get involved in these situations, Jerry decided to step up and defend his daughter. They had a fistfight and Jerry won. This being said he is a very very flawed character but I think he's starting to improve from the earlier seasons.

Honestly agreed, I actually really like Jerry, and I think that has a lot to do with the development he’s gone through in the past few seasons. Ever since the s3 finale, he’s really grown on me. Really, the only two thing I’ve absolutely HATED him for have been 1. when he accidentally reset Morty’s video game reset device right after surviving a plane crash and having this awesome life with the girlfriend he’d found and 2. the Gotron episode. In my opinion, both Beth and Jerry acted completely deplorably by practically abandoning Morty the way that they did, and the fact that they only came back after Summer put them through the same shit she’d put Morty through makes it even worse because they hadn’t even felt remorse for what they’d done to Morty. I can forgive the remote control incident because that had been a mistake, but the Gotron incident… Idk, it just makes me angry LOL

I hate jerry too, absolutely but I think you misunderstood something- the alien gf situation; he wasn’t bragging about her to morty and summer, he was projecting his own thoughts about her onto them in order to feel better about his choice. The only reason he dated/bonded with that alien was because he was desperate to not only NOT be alone, but to be seen as a person that was capable of moving on from a divorce when he couldn’t actually. Still worth hating through that whole episode. Everything other conclusion you’ve made so far seems to be spot on.
This is an opinion- but the real difference between rick and jerry I think, is that rick knows exactly what kind of piece of shit he is and embraces it. Jerry? Pretends like he has has no clue what he is, its a part of what makes him shitty, part of his “I’m pitiful please love me” bit. If he admits what he is, people will stay away, he can’t have that. He has to pretend like he doesn’t know and that it hurts his feelings to hear

But also, I feel like later on in the show, Jerry is more and more self-aware. Like in bethic twinstinct, he throws a tantrum but he still comes out of it acknowledging that he's being petty which I don't think he would've done in season 1-3

The reason most of us can't stand Jerry Smith
is because 99% of us *ARE* Jerry Smith
Lets be honest if most of us where in Rick and Morty we wouldn't be the genius scientist or lucky enough to be born into his family and by our selves we wouldn't survive long in a world that brutal. The best most of us could hope for is to marry into the family and be the best "normal" person that we can be.

Imagine having your son, daughter, and wife worship a man who just showed up one day because he's cooler. Jerry is a lot of things but he's a good, honest person. Nobody here is intelligent enough to content with Rick, especially people who think they are. The characterization of Jerry is a perfect example of the harmful, dangerous, most evil thing of weakness & incompetence. That's worse than active malice & sadism. In later seasons, & I have mixed feelings about it, the characterization sometimes shows he's capable of more, esp given alternate Jerrys. But that just reinforces how awful he always was. It means he always *was* capable of being better, but chooses the path of least resistance, a weak thing. He *can* be strong or capable, but he'll only ever do so when it's the only thing left to do. That makes it much worse than if this is the only thing of which he's capable. You can't *truly* blame someone who cannot be more than they are, it's tragic, it's worth hating or disdaining, but that's all they are then. Jerry is worse for the later evidence he *can* be more.

On one hand, yeah, comics might not be canon, but on the other, as you said, at this point this show is now a inconsistent mess, so these might be canon.
Also in season 1 and 3 it was shown that, without Beth, Jerries life would be far "better". Like in that episode about multidimensional cable, in one version of himself he was a super star and in season 3, when he was in seperation from Beth, he was actually going somewhere with himself. Its like Beth and her family were the true parasites.

Moments when Jerry does very non-Jerry things, like being brave, or when Jerry is genuinely pleased with pathetic everyday accomplishments. The emotions I felt when Jerry met ‘stupid’ Rick I can’t even put into words. And the Jerryboree! Watching 15 ricks trying to figure out which port the HDMI cord plugs into just makes me happy. • @arianaink100
    @arianaink100 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think Jerry is a good character. I think he’s actually a male father that’s realistic : and the realism is the weakness of being a human in a larger world and being true to oneself.
Just because you’re human doesn’t make you the best or the smartest or the strongest or the most well rounded. You can be just an average person.
Jerry is average and in a world of extremes or a world of expecting the best of the best through ricks achievements Jerry is the ultimate foil. Morty might be ricks foil in the moment with morality (is this a good idea what about sanctity of life? He is the cricket to the Pinocchio life of Rick.)
Jerry is the physical embodiment foil where everything Rick does is opposed by Jerry not on moral standing but on principle or direct thought to action from one adult to another adult. (Rick an adult with thoughts and beliefs. Vs Jerry with thoughts and beliefs both are treated equally in quick durations despite there being a bias of ricks importance due to his intelligence.)
Jerry has some autonomy and some control of the situation in the past he’s attempted to put his foot down about the situation and been ignored - they won’t get rid of Rick which would be a net positive to Morty and his growth
(suggested by Jerry with the best interest of Morty albeit human and skewed and not an intelegence argument but an argument about happiness within the world and getting to know and grow with people-- this is ignored by Beth who doesn’t understand spending time with people she cares about. They don’t hangout they all spend time in the same house and do nothing but drink/watch tv. Jerry is the only one with hobbies who gets outta the house who wanted to enjoy going to work everyday coming home and having family time. Beth hates her job wishing she was a human surgeon she doesn’t have hobbies she doesn’t have friends she doesn’t have parents who spend time with her she is self reliant and doesn’t like spending time with Jerry or with her kids- a mother daughter day becomes inside out 80ft human morphs and hugs Beth can’t have normalcy. Beth doesn’t have good relationships and doesn’t understand spending time with people to enjoy it and make memories.
Rick disagrees because what does the earth have to offer that an alternate dimension doesn’t and what does earth have that space exploration doesn’t and what does earth have that gives it value? To him it’s nothing that doesn’t matter)
So you have Jerry who cares very much about the earth his earth life his social sanding the issues on earth or his relationship to them and how he is perceived by other humans on earth. That’s a far more relatable character and one that is so human and social that it completely contradicts Rick and his values and ideals about earth. Rick would rather have a federation of himself to be isolated then destroy as if it were a lame project because he can’t even have a conversation with another human being that feels meaningful.
Morty can question Rick as a child, but Jerry questions Rick as a man.
He may rely on Rick and ask Rick for guidance or some tech but that reliance always points to something Jerry is deeply concerned about. His concerns are mediocre melodramatic and blasé and they’re so blasé and normal that Rick can’t build him anything because he can’t account for Jerry’s mundane desires.
He is honestly the best to expect because he’s just normal. His feelings his thoughts his feelings are selfish at times are rude or off topic but they’re human basic even.
Jerry is an average Joe: he doesn’t have skills and his random time spent on hobby’s is used as a joke. Beekeeping/can write a memoir/likes titanic/coin collection/ice cream. None of these things he enjoys matters- not to Jerry’s overall life not to Jerry’s marriage not to Jerry’s intelligence but they still matter to Jerry for small reasons that make him happy. He was the only one sort of normal and happy he blames his unhappiness from Rick coming into their lives and ruining his life aka the home life the job and feeling secure and safe having family bonding. He can’t do that as he was because of Rick and his attitudes. So Jerry we see spirals 90% of the time and with depressive tendencies. What Jerry wants is mundane it’s a family to be happy with a job to enjoy and be recognized at and day to day stability. Our issue is that as an audience we don’t know if Morty/summer/Beth we’re happy and content in their boring day to day life prior to ricks involvement. We don’t know if Jerry was honest about the claim that Rick is tearing apart the family - or if Jerry had a self inflated ego and just thought everything was fine because of his boring life and not asking others and how they are but deciding for them. We don’t know if they were a happy little family just living their lives prior to Rick, or already on the edge of a divorce. And Rick does have some involvement with disrupting the family daily life / dynamics/ day to day activities/ even living a single day.
Because there’s no real progression with his life either because he chooses not to progress. Rick and Morty are stunted to be the way they are forever as the age they are there’s no going forward no going back every day is timeless and every moment is a faction of their lifetimes and sometimes memory erased from their brain.
There’s not life progression in any way the world the universe doesn’t matter it’s solely a focus on character progressions and feelings. It lacks mundane realism and normality instead opting for chaos as a designed and chosen option and planned randomness as normality. What could go wrong pleanty of things but it’s not because life is chaotic it’s because of choices one has made resulting in chaos. Jerry can ask to fix a golf swing and end up with hostages because his normal want is impossible to achieve in the world with nonhuman ways. Morty can kill an intergalactic cloud with a space gun because of actions taken prior in the day. Jerry is left happy/content. Morty is left questioning and spiraling feeling isolated in the world.

Prepare for a decent surprise on the coming seasons because not only does Jerry improve a whole lot later down the line, but a very certain episode throws us a bomb shell about Jerry that I won't spoil here.

Such a Jerry thing to hate Jerry. 12 seconds in and you're saying Jerry is the worst father, like Rick doesnt exist in the same show😂

Valid considering majority everyone's hatred to Jerry was post Season 3.
Season 1 - 2: Jerry was a insecure dad who's trying to do what's best for family, even though most of his outcomes came out pathetic, was genuinely trying to be a better person for his family. He may appeared to be selfish but honestly he only cares of his family. (Example: Last episode of season 2 when he was willing to give up Rick to the Galactic Federation for the safety of his family)
Season 3 and onwards: Jerry is an insecure dad, he's embraced being pathetic. He's also super selfish and usually written to be laughed at.
He sucks because he had some charm to his character, he was never a selfish character, he's just unlucky guy trying to make everything work. The writers just made him a joke and killed any potential character development after season 2's ending.

You know I was in a terrible marriage to a bitter woman for a long time and at the beginning of the show I felt really bad for Jerry and even related to him. But it's time went by I started to see him as being really weak and pathetic, which is something I didn't want to relate to LOL. And while I do think that is tough and her and Jerry might not be the best fit she seemed less insufferable as time went on as you saw how difficult it was for her to be married to somebody like Jerry. I like Jerry and Beth quite a bit but for different reasons than they did when I first started watching this show

Okay, but consider this: I love him and I can fix him and he is my little baby and I will marry him and spends my days creating art while he works during the day and at night he will tell me all about his star wars coin collection and he will sleep laying on my chest while I sing brazilian lullabys

I think Jerry is at his best on the very first two seasons. Sure he's portrayed as kinda mediocre, but he was also the man of the house and could very well make a living. He was doing so before Rick arrived, after all. Not only that, but he constantly took action to solve the problems that he gets himself or the family into. I mean damn, we got an entire episode showing how he was willing to do anything to save his wife when the whole Cronenberg thing started and became the main reason the family actually survived that whole ordeal. He was the leader and actually fought back against the world. And sure, one might say that this was the original Jerry and since the Cronenberg episode, we've been following a different Jerry. But it's still Jerry and the episode made it clear that the only difference this new dimension should have was that Rick actually managed to cure everyone instead of turning everyone into monsters. Either way it still ends up feeling like character regression, to the point that at the first episode of season 3, when Earth was in chaos because the economy had collapsed, he literally crawled his way back home, avoiding any conflict while cowering in fear. I mean, was it really necessary to change the character that much? Feels like he went the "flanderization" effect, with the show highlighting his most recognizable worst traits and forgetting about most of what he could be, making him more bland in the process.

Isn't jerry the sane one in that family? Jerry only wants morty to go to school and get a great education, rick is the one ruining it. How is jerry the evil guy? I know he did act selfish at times but we're all human and being selfish at times shouldn't make him like the worst dad ever.

I used to feel like that about jerry, but watching the series a couple of times has given me a different perspective, jerry is still a teenager because he married beth, I figured that when we saw jerry’s friend in highschool tell him to stay away from her and the worst case scenario for him is if she likes him, and then beth telling him that she’s not with him because he got her pregnant, but because he stayed, this led me to believe that be had gotten pregnant by other guys and they all abandoned her after she confronted them but she kept this one, summer, because he chose to stay with her. The other thing that makes jerry portrayed in this way is rick. When rick “came back” to his family, jerry had been trying to be assertive and put his leg down many times, yet rick always finds a way to either convince them to let him do what he pleases, or, which is what he usually does, convince beth and lets her deal with jerry. Also I noticed that most of the conversations or arguments about beth not loving jerry or about their marriage had begun because of something rick had done or said, and that’s emphasized by the speech he gave Morty right when they got divorced. I personally think “the flu” episode depicts how jerry is a good man and would do anything to help his family, he’s practically the one who kept them alive after rick had abandoned them, and I believe the only difference between that episode and any other Jerry moment is that rick wasn’t there to sabotage him.

Jerry is writen well, so his traits seem more real. He is a caricter, Homer is a caricature. Homer is an archetype, Jerry is a specimen. It's a whole different type of world, and not a like comparison imo.
