Dede is an extremely toxic character. However i hate that the writers kinda glossed over the fact Jay was an emotionally unavailable partner. Dede did everything she could to raise her family. With an emotionally unavailable partner, in that era where he wasnt part of raising the kids. It was all on Dede. Personalitg deformities were bound to happen to that woman. Jay simply decided to turn over a new leaf and was lucky enough to have his kids around him. They simply chose a less harmful parent. Dede never got any of that opportunity.
I actually don't understand why everyone hates her that much. Everyone would freak out if an ex husband marries a woman like Gloria. Totally understandable. And the other aspects... even Claire admits sometimes to be like her mother. Dede raised the kids alone, father was absent and cold hearted. He says he made many faults in his first marriage.
